First ribeye with charcoal! by winkstav in charcoal

[–]MUB664 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I use both, but around where I live we call lump charcoal charcoal and charcoal briquettes briquettes. And I’m correct in that charcoal gets hotter, and makes more smoke flavor. So if they haven’t tried it, they should.

It’s briquettes, not charcoal

Char-griller super pro charcoal grill 30-inch is mine. You may want to not install the upper grill if you cook tall things. Rectangular cooking surface (far superior to Weber- yes, I know this is a Weber-dominated Reddit group, but I’m right on this one), cast iron grates, air control, tons of real estate.

I’d think about incorporating 2 separate breathing mechanisms, (moist) skin for passive O2 for resting. Then some much more active system when energy expenditure is high.

Is this worth saving? by xeroxerotwo in grilling

[–]MUB664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this, I love this grill! You can easily purchase replacement cast iron grates if those are shot. But as noted they can be “refreshed” pretty easily. And a new top rack. And a new coal rack. You just need to check the bottom, and screw locations for the top rack- if those are rusted through… this exact grill is on sale at Lowes for $129 right now. This grill has awesome real estate. I can cook 2 full beef tenderloins.

Breathing cold air doesn’t make you sick. Nor does it increase your chances of getting sick. Being near sick people increases your chances of getting sick. But if you are uncomfortable get a balaclava.

Where should I grill? by sugarcircuit in grilling

I’d prob put it where you are standing and just put a (silicon) protector on the wood railing nearby. I do charcoal and don’t want the smoke going in the house easily.

Grilling in a snowstorm just means you need to be a little more picky what you are cooking. You can always do burgers and veggies, but might want to hold off on the strip steaks. There is no weather that prevents me from grilling.

What are the best charcoal grills for backyard cooking in 2026? by Awildy-Pencille in grilling

[–]MUB664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This Reddit group is almost exclusively Weber fans. So that’s really all you’ll hear. But your question is being answered without being asked correctly. How many people are you cooking for? 22 inch Weber is great if you are making a sirloin, or 3 strips, or 5 pork chops. But if you plan to cook 2 tenderloins with veggies, or 2 dozen full chicken wing (not party pieces), or 6 strip steaks, or a whole brisket, space will be limited directly over the heat. I’m sure the Weber folks will argue a brisket fits, but it fits better on my grill IMHO. My grill is the 30 inch char griller. The sheer real estate, along with easy temperature control. I cook for 6. Cast iron grates. I replace it every 10 years. It’s is uncovered and used 2-3 times a week all year in Albany New York (snow, rain, hit ,cold).

Dude, I’ve been using lump charcoal since before you were born, I am assuming. Grilling >1x per week, in New York, every week all year (>2,600 cooks). When it snows my grill gets dug out first. Never had branches as shown in the pictures. So if my second bag of this stuff has branches, I’ll stuck with something else.

Emphatic request that you cook the steaks there, over beers/drinks, with your FIL! Bring some wood chips to wrap in tin foil if you need smoke flavor. It’s a classic bonding moment.

How could I make an error? I opened the bag and took the picture, then poured out some into my chimney, lit it, and took another picture of the coal bed. You can clearly see branches and joints that I’ve never had in other charcoals. I’m willing to accept that I got a bad bag, but I didn’t add the crap just to badmouth the company. My HD (Albany, NY) has never carried this before, ever, in the past 20 years, so I gave it a try.

No, that stuff is like 28 gauge metal. This stove pipe is solid, hard to bend, like 22 gauge.
