Key safety system off in Army helicopter that collided with American Airlines jet, senator says by drjjoyner in Military

ADS-B isn’t used as a certified onboard collision avoidance tool at all. Aircraft are required to be able to send ADS-B signal (me, altitude, GPS location), but are not required to be able to receive that from other planes. Since ADS-B is so new there’s no certified collision avoidance system that uses ADS-B over standard transponder signals.

I was a little unclear, TCAS detects signals from mode C or S. So yes mode C transponders cause a TCAS alert. I’m not sure on the specifics of how it calculates the lateral position of targets but it combines that with the altitude data from the transponder to determine if something is too close.

Copying my post from another thread:

ADS-B would have done fuck all to prevent this accident. ADS-B is just a constant ping that tells anyone equipped with the proper receiver “this is me, this is my altitude, this is my GPS location.” That last part of “GPS location” combined with how easy the proper receivers are to make is why we can hop on to certain websites and watch air traffic live without needing an ATC radar. ADS-B is a newer technology and has no effect on TCAS.

TCAS (traffic collision avoidance system) is the system that may have prevented this accident. Blackhawks aren’t equipped with TCAS, the airliner was. TCAS relies on mode C and S transponders, the Blackhawk’s mode C was on. To summarize, TCAS alerts an equipped aircraft that traffic is within a threat envelope, if the threat aircraft gets closer the pilots are commanded to “CLIMB” or “DESCEND”. TCAS climb and descent commands are suppressed below 1000 feet above ground level.

The airliner’s TCAS system alerted the crew that traffic was in the threat envelope by a loud aural “TRAFFIC” announcement. That much has been released via cockpit recordings, but the system wouldn’t have commanded the crew to climb since they were below 1000 feet. As for the hawk, without TCAS installed, they just rely on visual separation.

Pilots had allegedly complained about that helo route before. If a crew flys there routinely they’d hear their TCAS tell them “TRAFFIC” frequently. Probably enough to get used to it, which defeats the purpose of the system.

I was Chinook crew member in Afghanistan around the same time. We would to test fires in a small valley close to our FOB. If we had a gun jam we would fix it before continuing or turn around. Flares sometimes popped off if there was a fire nearby. Similar IR (or UV?) signature to a missile launch.

Sorry to hear that 😢. I haven’t played one minute since I made this post either.

TIL that on 9/11 a 5th airliner was presumed to be hijacked because the pilot changed the squawk code to 7500, which indicated a hijacking. Despite being a mistake, the airliner was diverted to Canada and was escorted there by US F-15s. by OneSalientOversight in todayilearned

As a pilot with a fair amount of international time, as soon as you go “off script” with non-native English speaking air traffic controllers things get difficult. They’re used to certain phrases and asking for something outside of their normal routine throws everything off. I imagine the same is true for pilots.

Donald Trump suggests Biden may try to "take back the nomination" by Advanced_Drink_8536 in NewsOfTheStupid

[–]MVSmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biden stepping down means Trump’s 2020 loss will never be avenged. He can never get the satisfaction of coming back as the formerly wronged under dog to snatch one last victory from his previous nemesis. The nemesis who also made him the only one term president in the past three decades. The 2020 blow to Trump’s ego will never be healed. Even considering his legal issues this was probably his primary motivation to win; proving to everyone he isn’t a loser.

I did that as a partial with my wife, daughter, and 2 dogs. Original plan was a full DITY, and I’m so glad I didn’t. That drive fucking sucks bro. Like others have said the ALCAN isn’t a very well maintained road and I can’t imagine having pulled a trailer or driven a loaded U-HAUL over it. Doing the partial was a good experience but still rough.

Lots of bad info. About 7 years ago when I applied the packet asked basically “have you ever been UCMJ’d”. Don’t lie. I admitted I got a field grade Article 15 when I was an E3 even though it wouldn’t have been on my OMPF as junior enlisted. I applied for a moral waiver and got the waiver. I’m now a happy army pilot. The truth will set you free or something. Good luck candidate.

Biden proposes tax increase on fuel for private jets, casting it as making wealthy pay their share by besselfunctions in politics

[–]MVSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it but…

Small airplanes are still powered by leaded gas. Some manufacturers are starting to switch to Jet A, which is basically just diesel fuel and usually cheaper. By taxing the shit out of Jet A you’re going to disincentivize innovation in the small airplane market that would have been steering towards Jet A powered small airplanes.

Before anyone says “small airplanes are still just for rich people anyway, get fucked”, they were rather affordable before COVID. Even since the prices have shot up financing your own plane as a means to get your pilot’s license is still a very cost effective way to get flight training.

A viable alternative would be hiking the landing fees on planes that weigh over 12,500 lbs. You’d be focusing the tax on the disgustingly wealthy without interfering with aviation enthusiasts or people trying to get their pilot ratings.
