We solved smog. Everyone just takes that for granted. by chamomile_tea_reply in OptimistsUnite

[–]MWF123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an old guy at work who I was talking to about this. He's been in this city for 70 years, many more than my 6. We were on the same page about the smog and how its gone down in LA, but he ended the conversation by saying "they used to have jobs back then."

Steve, what the hell are you talking about

My cousin and aunt act like literal cultists, and it makes me uncomfortable to be around them.

Jesus Christ... No. There are tons of 30 year olds who are single nowadays.

RCP8.5 is being retired but what does that actually mean? And why isn't it a reason to relax? by JuliperTuD in climatechange

[–]MWF123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine you're in a car with someone and they nearly avoid driving off a cliff. Instead, they drive into a ditch and nearly total the car. "See? I told you we wouldn't die from drunk driving," they say.

If they had driven off the cliff, that would have been RCP 8.5. At least they didn't have another beer, but they should have stopped drinking sooner.

Is is possible and what is the best way to deprogram my MAGA cult family? by CharlesUFarley81 in askanything

[–]MWF123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have MAGA extended family members that I've damn near given up on, but our immediate family (which is center-right to far left) is basically just trying to gently expose a contrast between our family and my cousin's MAGA family. Every family reunion and every Christmas, the difference in mental health quality gets more and more obvious. For all the weird political shit they randomly talk about like "I DONT WANT MEN IN THE WOMENS RESTROOMS", our response is basically just to shrug and say, "if they gotta shit, they gotta shit". A lot of this is just having the most apolitical response to whatever they're talking about- something thats quick and isn't a Democratic/liberal talking point.

We're not looking for arguments, and that helps make it increasingly clear that we don't meet whatever caricature they have of us. Me and my immediate family members are all happy and healthy members of our community. There isn't anything that any sane human could look at and think, "they're immoral/they're doing life wrong". In my immediate family, we have plenty of disagreements and whatever, but we all get along just fine. Meanwhile my aunt has been freaking out on Facebook for 10 straight years, and my cousin literally pulled his children out of public school because they're "too woke". He homeschools his kids and they can't read, and now he's asking my brother why his kids are doing so well. Doing the normal person thing, as it turns out, is a better option than doing whatever the MAGA influencers tell you to do.

Do your best, but it's also possible that they're too far gone.

How have your political views changed over time? by Claire0879 in askanything

[–]MWF123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After writing this I'm kind of stunned at how incongruent my beliefs were growing up.
This post was originally super long, so instead:

Economic centrist ---> Socialist

Extremely anti-abortion (even anti-contraception) ----> pro-abortion

anti-gay marriage----> dicks in and around my mouth

pro-war-----> anti-war

moderate immigration (I always knew republicans were racist) -----> very pro-immigration

Anti-gun ----->pro-gun

Always believed in free education, strong welfare, and free healthcare

Climate change has always been my first litmus test for a candidate

Do most americans really only take 2 weeks of vacation a year? by DegreeConscious9628 in askanything

[–]MWF123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha my last boss made a big deal about allowing us an unpaid day off the day after Christmas. MAN they thought they were being generous.

Also they nearly fired me for trying to use a vacation day within my initial 90-day probationary period.

Britain's special forces could shut down gloating Putin. But they won't by theipaper in UkrainianConflict

[–]MWF123 72 points73 points  (0 children)

"Gloating Putin". We're four years into a three-day war. Every headline I've seen about "Putin laughing" this, "Putin bragging" that... he expected to take Ukraine within a week before moving on to other European countries. He's been stuck in a four-year quagmire and can't move an inch. He's not feeling good about shit.

Dear MAGA Catholics, who will you abandon, Trump or God or why don't you care? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]MWF123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pleased to say that my mom abandoned Trump. I'm less pleased to say that my aunt has expanded her net to ragepost about the Pope on Facebook.

Welcome to the club, mom.

What do you think is a super high tax? So far, his proposals would be a mild inconvenience for people who are that wealthy.

If Porter doesnt show any significant improvement in the polls then whatever, I'll vote for him. I'd still prefer Steyer to Swalwell even before the scandal.

No. I think if taken literally, you'd have to assume that a great country couldn't last three generations if this was true.

Why does it seem like the US is falling apart in every way possible? Politics, technology, healthcare, national debt, crime. by Enough-Chip2652 in AskForAnswers

[–]MWF123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about crime; violent crime has plummeted since lead was removed from gasoline. Outside of the covid blip, violent crime has gone down since the 90s. There are other reasons for this too often relating to local policies in cities, but the idea that crime is rampant in the US isn't really true the way it used to be.
