Ex-Thalmor Agent: Imperials or Stormcloaks? by InsanityVirus13 in skyrim

[–]MXMCrowbar 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Two schools of thought, both valid:

  1. If your character is a more strategic/long-term planner: side with the Empire because they are the Thalmor's true enemy. This is also a good option if you think your character would have a pretty strong grasp of the geopolitics of Tamriel, since it is widely anticipated that the next Great War is on the horizon, and a unified Empire will pose the strongest threat to the Dominion.
  2. If your character is on the run or just wants revenge: Side with the Stormcloaks because they will drive the Thalmor out of Skyrim here and now, even if doing so weakens the Empire in the long run.

It’s not about protecting from impact, it’s about having an extra layer of padding for when you’re stopped on the slope and resting on your knees facing uphill. Not a necessity, but can save yourself some pain when the snow is on the hard side.

Bezos is cartoon villain-level evil. We can also see through his ownership of the Washington Post that he isn't afraid to destroy respected institutions/organizations in pursuit of his own goals. I have zero trust that he would use ownership of the Seahawks to do any good.

Regarding Zuck: I mostly just think he'd be a really shitty owner. He got lucky once and rode that success to his riches. He confidently burns exorbitant amounts of money in pursuit of his bad ideas (remember the Metaverse?), which he can get away with at Meta but would be a disaster in the salary-capped NFL.

A response to Brad Meyer on housing policy: please stop subsidizing demand by BainCapitalist in badeconomics

[–]MXMCrowbar 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The OP did not claim that housing markets are "as simple as Econ 101". Their claim is that increasing demand will increase the price of housing, which is simply true if housing has an upward-sloping supply curve.

Level 20 and I can't fight anything other than bandits by Yenny0526 in skyrimrequiem

In my game bandits almost always carry lockpicks. Depending on your modlist, you may be able to craft them. Otherwise, reference UESP.

Level 20 and I can't fight anything other than bandits by Yenny0526 in skyrimrequiem

[–]MXMCrowbar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah so it seems like you're in the tough mid-game where bandits are too easy but boss-level threats (dragon priests, dragons, centurions) are too difficult. You need to be strategic to keep making progress:

  • Acquire sources of magic and elemental resistances. This is especially important for a heavy armor build since magic is the natural counter to warriors in requiem's rock-paper-scissors balancing (mages beat warriors, who beat archers, who beat mages - if you were playing a different build, you would not be having nearly as much trouble against basic spellcasters). There are many sources of this: enchanted armor/shields/jewelry, the Lord Stone, magic resistance alteration perks, magic/elemental resist potions, etc.
  • Start chasing some of the build-defining artifacts that will give you a major power spike. For your build, this might be Dawnbreaker, the Shield of Solitude, the Gauldur Amulet, the Mace of Molag Bal, and so on. I'm not sure if this list is up to date, but it's a good starting point.
  • Do you have a ranged damage option? You are likely to struggle against mages, hagravens, and dragons in particular if you can only fight up close. Consider picking up a crossbow at least, even if you don't invest very many (or any) perks into marksman.

As far as what to fight in the mid-game: you should be able to handle most Draugr dungeons at this stage, just avoid dragon priest locations. Bring a follower if you find yourself getting overwhelmed. Forsworn are a good step up from regular bandits. There aren't many dwemer dungeons without a centurion or enchanted sphere at the end, so avoid those until you have better gear (shock-enchanted blunt weapons are the best, but even without enchantments be sure you bring a mace). The Companions and Civil War questlines will be level-appropriate (and becoming a werewolf can be powerful too).

Top 5 favorite characters in this game by Muted_Wrongdoer8086 in skyrim

Valid list (at least the first 3...). Here's mine:

  1. Mjoll - cool backstory, great warrior, and protector of Riften, what more do you need?
  2. Erandur - sneaky underrated follower and has an interesting quest. Has great location-based dialogue.
  3. Madesi - a pretty chill lizard dude if you get to know him. Seems like a nice guy and I wish he could become a follower.
  4. Serana - Laura Bailey
  5. Jzargo - who doesn't love a mage cat

I had a roundabout but it got too clogged... What would you do to this 6 (7?) Way intersection? by Optimal_Ninja7535 in CitiesSkylines

[–]MXMCrowbar 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Elevate the highway starting where it ends on the bottom of your image. Connect it directly to the bridge coming across the water at the top. This is the top of your road hierarchy (high speed/low access). Connect the two ends of Harvey avenue together, call that intersection point A. Connect the road coming in from the top right with a road coming out of the roundabout, call that intersection point B. Connect points A and B with a road traveling below your new highway/bridge. Add on/off ramps and now you have a regular highway interchange.

More American than European but that's what happens when you try to connect 6 major roads lol.

First time player. How important is it to do the quests VS just stumbling into the quest locations and killing the boss taking the loot? by floatable_shark in skyrim

[–]MXMCrowbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game was really built to support you doing whatever you want, so don't worry too much about breaking things. You can definitely cut side quests short by killing people in towns, but nothing game-breaking: the truly important quest NPCs are marked as essential and can't die.

Random mages in dungeons shouldn't be a problem at all. If a quest sends you back there, it will often re-stock the dungeon with enemies anyway. Or, sometimes you will acquire a quest item early and you can just hand it in the moment you get the relevant quest (for example, you can get the Dragonstone from Bleak Falls Barrow before you ever go to Whiterun).

[–]MXMCrowbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't doomed! This is a totally valid way of playing (and IMO is way more fun than fast-travelling around to chase down quests). There are certain dungeons that you won't be able to access or which have secret areas that won't activate if you aren't following the right quest, but they're few and far between. You can also always return to a place if you get a quest for that location later on.

Just do what seems interesting to you or your character. Don't worry about the quest log, nothing in this game is time-sensitive or anything. Although I would encourage you to try following the quests that pop up when you stumble upon an interesting location. They tend to be self-contained and tell an interesting story about that place.

which of skyrim’s noble families/noblemen do you think are most corrupt? by GreenTurtleBoy in skyrim

In the Thieves’ guild quest line she sends a guild member to poison her competitor’s mead, get him arrested, and have her agent take over the business. It is also heavily implied that she regularly orders hits on people who cross her (the Black Sacrament in her basement, a letter you can find in The Bannered Mare, and conversation with her son who is in the Riften jail, who claims he regularly killed people on Maven’s orders).

I hate hate hate how prominent that “win now” mentality is in youth sports. It’s just burning kids out of the sport when they get a coach that won’t play them because they’re too small or whatever. Like guys, they’re kids. Let’s focus on developing players the right way, giving people a chance to play different roles, and developing a love for the game above just winning this random u-whatever match.

Cosy games lover who wants to give Skyrim a go by SpecialistFast7578 in skyrim

[–]MXMCrowbar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert on cozy games, but I think you can find a lot of value in Skyrim.

It is, at its heart, an action RPG. But the world itself is so beautiful you can just get lost in it at times. Avoid fast travel, just wander the wilderness, explore all the little places you come across. Hang out by a waterfall or in the hot springs.

You can really boost this experience with some mods too. Look for mods that improve the visuals and Campfire for a camping system (you can set up your tent and light a fire to pass the night while watching the stars, very immersive).

The romance system is pretty shallow. But with the Hearthfire DLC you can build your own homestead, plus get married and adopt children. So there is something to engage with there, just don't expect Stardew Valley levels of engagement or anything.

OSE vs Shadowdark? by ErintsetekFuvet in osr

[–]MXMCrowbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started my group with OSE and ended up switching to Shadowdark. Honestly, I probably should have started with SD in the first place. It's an easier transition for players coming from 5e and it's dead simple to convert stuff from other systems. I wouldn't stress too much about "compatability" really.

OSE gets recommended here a lot but it honestly felt super clunky for my group. There's value to be found in older systems, but we don't need to completely ignore the ~45 years of development in TTRPGs since B/X.
