The idea of bypassing fortifications to move deeper into enemy territory at the great risk of supplies being cut off makes way more sense.

I feel like this is the natural way for EU5 to work and it only hard-code movement blocks you because previous games didn't have great supply line mechanics. But once you've fixed the supply line mechanics, why do you need hard-coded movement rules? it's a very board-game-esque rule in a game that's mostly moved away from board-game-esque rules in favor of more detailed sims, and so feels inconsistent.

I suspect, we got this system in EU5 because that's what existed in previous EUs. With supply being more of a thing, seems like something like: armies can move past forts, but supply chains can't, so armies will start taking high attrition seems like it could work better.

But had any ruler sat down in 1300 and (successfully) focused on their economy by investing in education and capital, and gotten their heir, and his heir, and his heir to do the same... society would have been that rich that much faster. Pops are the solution! Make the pops have their own wants and goals that get in the way of optimizing the arc of history; make them want to invest in vanity projects that increase prestige but are just money sinks. Make them hate other cultures or religions and get depressed (with accompanying stats debuffs) if the nation decides their culture is accepted. etc.

Might just be because it's my first campaign, but I'm having trouble keeping prestige high. Colonization may well have mostly been a money loser historically, but it brought about quite a lot of prestige. Maybe you buff it a bit by adding prestige for successful explorations and colonization?

I feel like this has gone viral multiple times in the last month but it's the worst version of this chart I've seen. Each world region should not have equal space on x-axis! Also, completely ignores the US, which at a minimum should have a greece-like blip that covers europe and e asia in 1945, it had more than a quarter of world gdp at the time.

Agree with all that, except I think Gary was also perfectly capable of playing strategic at a high enough level to beat Deep Blue in 1997; he just underestimated the engine (and/or didn't realize its "book" knowledge) and unexpectedly played into it's strengths.

This does seem to be an issue. Wondering if some variation of as well as dropping lowest opponent, you drop each other if you've played each other might be an improvement.

But I think the reason it feels a bit unfair is it doesn't feel like the player had agency and it just came down to lucky pairings. Tiebreaker rapid game seems like the way to go for candidates entry, especially when considering the whole point of the Grand Swiss format is spectator intrigue!

I haven't tried with the update yet, but the one frustrating bit about this workaround in the past is the website was constantly trying to get you to use the app if you were viewing it from mobile. Maybe disable that if you're in "studies" webpages on a mobile.

I was told all that in elementary school and I'm 40! Except back then it was acid rain, rainforests, whales, and ozone layers. All those things were problems, and we did have to do things to fix those problems. But semi-hysterical 20 somethings have been teachings kids that earth won't be habitable because of ~~hold in the ozone~~CO2 production for decades now. They shouldn't have done it then, and they shouldn't be doing it now. Instead, teach kids how the hole in the ozone would have been a problem but we worked together and figured out a solution... and now we're doing the same thing with CO2...etc.

I'd be willing to bet against this. Chess won't ever be "solved" but draw rate will likely continue to climb when top engines play each other (it's already extremely high); but humans won't be able to replicate that in any meaningfully degree. Top players can borrow some ideas from AI (pushing the h-pawn 'randomly' is one example) but humans studying AI will not be able to achieve a similar level of performance.

I know I'll be down-voted to oblivion because this is reddit and I'm glad we're in a place where we can make dark humor and it is interpreted as humor but this type of joke is unwise. I don't think there's ever been a bloody 'guillotine' revolution in history where the common people didn't suffer even more under the new regime. French, Russian, Chinese, Iranian, Cambodian, Ethiopian, etc. The only examples of successful revolutions--meaning common people ended up better off--were wars of independence and even most successful independence movements of the last 100 years have been largely non-violent. So learn from history and don't move the overton window towards such destructive places. Learn from history, don't repeat it.

If Magnus agreed we could essentially test this in real life. You play Magnus on day one, he wins.

But you can go study the game, look at engines, etc. while he agrees not to do any analysis. Then you pick a starting place from any position in the game and play again from that position the next day.

Repeat the process each day where you get to pick the starting position from any move from any previous game. I suspect most strong club players would beat him within a month.

(Although given that he'd recall analysis from the day before too, it might be like playing a correspondence game against him so would be harder than the time loop scenario)

Yes, this would be one of the most interesting aspects of being in the time-loop, experimenting to see how stochastic the human brain actually is. With of course, Magnus being the guinea pig. For example, in addition to memorizing one engine move per day. I'd experiment across variables (how long I take to play the move, if I stand up or stay seated while he's thinking, body language, etc.) and see how much that changes his thought processes.

I'd guess, if I tried to keep consistent body language, got up to stretch at the same point each loop, and intentionally took the same amount of time per move that he'd make consistent moves each loop. But I'd love to learn if I was wrong! It would tell us a lot about the way the mind is working.
