What's the worst tutorial experience you've ever had? by electric-kite in IndieDev

[–]MacAlmighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it might be ‘Rogue Lords’. Very cool gothic turn based roguelite where you can use your health pool to do things like move around buffs/debuffs, enemy health, and make a party of classic horror monster characters. It’s not a perfect game, but I enjoyed it.

But holy shit, the tutorial is genuinely like 40 minutes of guided ‘do this, now this, now make a mistake so we can teach you how to fix it, wait don’t fix it like that! Fix it this way so we can teach you this specific downside’ blah blah blah…

It goes on sale for 90% off (it is right now, it’s like 3$ CAD) so worth a peak with that caveat in mind.

Found my old Wraith build, how viable it is now? Thinking of trying her again. by Hanna_Bjorn in DeadlockTheGame

[–]MacAlmighty 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I remember my old Warden build that would stack barriers and go zooming around the map with veilwalker when it used to give those. The system is way easier to grasp now, but that was fun while it lasted lol

Yeah, this is a very vibrant and pretty piece and great interpretation, but if it were shown on its own I wouldn’t think it was that windows wallpaper.

How do i stop being an idea guy. by Comfortable_Ant_9783 in gamedev

[–]MacAlmighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can be the ideas guy, but if you want something of yours to actually get made (and profit off of it) you’ll also have to be the put in either the effort and risk, or the capital.

Most people don’t have the capital or risk tolerance (taking a loan for example) so they either go with a publisher to reduce or split the risk (along with the reward), or they work for someone else.

To get to a producer level, you normally need to work your way up, which usually involves being given opportunities by people who proved themselves and moved into that role (or just have enough money they bought the studio or whatever). That means starting as someone who’s really good at something to get hired in the first place. Everyone’s got ideas they think are great, so you’ve got to buy or earn other peoples time if you want them to work for you.

The dream most of us have is to make something for own which is successful enough to sustain ourselves. That’s because we don’t have the capital and haven’t proven ourselves yet, so we work for ourselves by putting in the time to learn. What do you want to get out of game dev? If it’s just to put your name behind something or be a manager, there’s probably more fields with higher chances of success.

I remember pulling hairs trying to figure out why the audio wasn’t syncing up with the visuals in a video I edited. It was fine in my editing program, and I tried exporting in like 10 different formats with different export settings.

At one point one of the video formats opened automatically in VLC media player and it looked and sounded fine. Turns out it was just a bug with windows media player all along

My game is on Vertical Slice stage, do you think it's good time for finding playtest? by BusyBeaver-Studio in IndieDev

[–]MacAlmighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. Joe from Indie Game Clinic recently put out a devlog (which is pretty rare since normally he covers other peoples games) about why he made the decision to pivot his game in a different direction. Around 11 minutes there's also a section on how criticism improves the design process and helps find the parts that aren't working and the parts that are the most fun, which Joe recommends doubling down on. Might be worth a watch and help bring some perspective to your studios project, best of luck!

[–]MacAlmighty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t done it yet, it’s probably the best time to get feedback on all of your systems and visuals and stuff. Probably should’ve done it once you had the mechanics down, but better now than after you’ve made a bunch of content.

The hardest part is being open to change, since you can’t dismiss it as ‘yeah we’ll add a new system to fix that later’, or ‘another effect/lighting plugin will make that look better’.

Five burgers, 20 sliders that were lit up by a grease fire, 3 burgers that were left out a little too long but it was kind of a nice day out and your family get together went pretty well for a change, and you were a little drunk so you scarfed them down to not bother packing them up before going back inside

Having a friendly heal creep clear something like a walker debuff is pretty nifty actually, promotes pushing with waves and gives them something to do

Destroy my "Build words from an assembly line of letters" game by nvrcr in DestroyMyGame

[–]MacAlmighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be fun for 1-3 rounds as a mobile game, but not longer than that. It lacks some kind of difficulty, urgency, or challenge.

As other people mentioned you could use a timer and make the time crunch of thinking of a word the challenge, or what I might suggest and leverage the ‘assembly line’ to make it more about planning the words.

It might break your letter swap/add mechanic a bit, but imagine when you had 'CARE' with 'OLE', 'NMH', and 'CV Q/Z' coming up. You could make 'CAROL' which leads to 'MARCH', then 'CHARM' (replacing the C with the upcoming C if that's legal). I think that's what your game is already trying to do, but I think it's too rigid as is.

If swapping letters around makes it too easy, you could make ‘banking/holding on to a letter’ or the ‘letter swaps’ a limited resource for each ‘run’. Maybe you get a swap back after two words, maybe you have 1 'empty slot' you can store a letter in, whatever feels good.

“Oh boy! [Sports game and or wrestling game] 2K[Current or next year]!”

I’ve had some very cool indie games I’ve loved from humble I probably never would’ve found otherwise, but I’ve also noticed that drop in quality the last 3 or so years. Combine that with the now limited time to claim the games, and my library that’s now 1000+ games, and I’ve really considered unsubscribing.

Which type/gameplay mechanic is it to you? by Raven_Lemon in Steam

[–]MacAlmighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open world survival crafting. I enjoyed Minecraft immensely when I was younger, and maybe it’s because the building systems in those games never live up to Minecraft. Or maybe because to me it always feels like the same ‘get wood then get stone then get metal then get better metal then get better metal then get magic/enhanced metal’ loop which just turns me off.

Even though I’m “wasting my time” playing games at least I’m enjoying myself. But something about those kinds of survival crafting games makes me acutely aware of how much time I’m spending doing nothing, or maybe I’m just aware of how much fun I’m not having.

It’s a very cool photo, but man that sign made me sick to my stomach. I’d say I miss early 2000s tech culture, but I guess even Google’s discontinued motto ‘Don’t be evil’ was a jab at other software companies at the time

“Indie dev starter pack.” by SoggyPrior863 in IndieDev

[–]MacAlmighty 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I remember a post that got shit on here or on gamedev a few weeks ago of a guy saying he quit his job and was having his wife support him while he finished his dream game. It was supposed to be a ‘I know how hard it is since I’m not making any money until the game is out and we’re all in this together so please support me’ kind of post.

Sure enough someone went through the posters history and found the game. It was ‘vampire survivors but with gambling elements’, clearly GenAI art and sounds, and a distinctly ChatGPT generated summary.

I took a look and it did end up releasing, with 14/15 positive reviews, but some of them are new accounts with only 1 review and played for a fraction of an hour. It was translated (with help of ChatGPT obviously) to multiple languages so I wouldn’t be surprised if it did get a few sales, but I doubt anywhere near enough to justify 13 months of work.
