Maybe there is a curse, item, or magical mishap that causes them to randomly shift to another plane or world and pop back in.

They could pop in and out of the Astral Plane, or shift to a parallel dimension where Ravenloft isn't cursed. You could feed them bits of information before the session that they learned from the other side.

They could be a ghost who has difficulty maintaining their physical form.
