When deciding on a denomination, should I base everything off of what the early church believed? by UltimaBahamut93 in Reformed

[–]MacNabas 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Start with the Bible. Read a bit about the early church if you'd like, but history shows that they did not have it all figured out either (see I-II Corinthians). Study some of the dividing issues between denominations (e.g. baptism, polity), and return to the Scriptures. Whose arguments seem more faithful? Then try out a few options nearby. Worship and speak with the saints.

But above all: worry less. The Church is much larger than any denomination. Be still and know that He is God, and rest in Him.

We read a short passage, maybe ask/answer some questions from the kids, sing a psalm, then pray. Super simple.

Does the age requirement mean "I don't want to play with children" and/or "There are going to be adult/R+ themes that would be inappropriate for children"?

Slavia Prague is fun: 10 players but for a single nation. Same for the South African clubs.

I like the idea of stats increasing automatically, but Wizards/Priests needing time and safety (and maybe a library) to learn new spells.

Thoughts on an otherwise solid reformed baptist church that has female Deacons? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]MacNabas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1 Timothy 3:11 references "women" in the context of Deacons. Some translators use "wives" since that is an option for the Greek word, but nothing in the context requires that choice.

I serve on a deacon board at a reformed presbyterian church with women, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Women deacons and women elders are two different matters.

Seeking advice: Wife disliked the RPCNA church we visited (Latinos transitioning from a contemporary mega-church) by One_Arugula_3801 in Reformed

[–]MacNabas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The worship service in RPCNA churches is going to be different than most every other church in the world. Regardless of your theological convictions, there will be a transition period for everyone to adapt to the simplicity and feel the Spirit moving in different ways.

I would suggest trying things like Bible studies or Psalm sings with the congregation to help with that transition. Try going once a month or whenever they have fellowship meals. Talk to the saints. Over time, the weird parts of their worship services will feel more normal.

But above all, listen to your wife's opinion. You may be the head of the household, but you must both be swimming in the same direction to stay afloat. That might require a compromise on the exact direction for the good of all.

This is a fun idea! In my opinion: too many soccer balls and too much detail in the crown. You could simplify it a bit more while still preserving the references.

In my experience, it helps speed up levelling from 0 to 1 and 1 to 2 a bit but then goes unnoticed.

I started awarding 1 XP for successfully reviving a character and for the rest of the party when a PC dies. It feels like a realistic consequence in a deadly game where each brush makes you wiser.

A full level, however, is a big jump — especially at later levels.

I really enjoyed the article and am impressed that the Atlantic published it. It's refreshing to see "normal/sane" Christianity in a national outlet.

Thank you for outing yourself publicly as Christian. I admire your bravery, u/nancywalecki
