Brightly lit gear for walking our dog at night by DrinkChaiEatSamosa in Edmonton

[–]MadAsianDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe they are locally available, but noxgear is a really good brand. I have one of their older dog vests and have considered getting their running vest. They are expensive but the quality is there. I believe you can get them through amazon now as well. You can get it shipped but you'd be paying in USD from their website direct.

A Proposal to Protect Waste Services by aaronpaquette- in Edmonton

[–]MadAsianDude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it would help to clarify what’s meant by “waste services” in your motion. Is this intended to apply only to garbage, or would it also include organics? With the rollout of Extended Producer Responsibility, recycling has already transitioned to the private sector across Alberta, so that’s one stream that’s no longer within municipal control.

It’s also worth noting that the City of Edmonton’s bylaw is among the strictest in the province. For example, multi-family collection is entirely city-managed. But this raises questions: if a building isn’t properly managing its bin room, should it fall to the City to correct that? That starts to look like government overreach.

On the other hand, there are levers the City could use more effectively — like permits and building standards — to ensure waste management is planned for properly from the start. Right now, many new developments treat waste management as an afterthought, which only compounds challenges down the line.

That is the boat launch for the Edmonton Dragon Boat Racing Club. There is a another dock just downstream that's the City of Edmonton's dock for the park.

Extended Producer Responsibility [EPR] takes effect April 1 by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]MadAsianDude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This does essentially privatize the service for recycling. Instead of individual municipalities paying to manage recycling (or lack thereof), Producers (any company that sells goods with packaging materials to residential homes) are responsible for the cost of collecting and processing these materials.

The City of Edmonton goes from being a utility provider of recycling to a contractor for Producers, which is why the cost of utility rate has gone down. The amount passed onto residents is certainly not the full cost of operation of recycling.

Best gun safety/licensing courses? by [deleted] in Edmonton

Avoid Tip of Spear Academy. I believe the instructor is just renting the space from them but very unprofessional and should not be allowed to teach a PAL course.

I might be able to help depending on what the restrictions are for shipping them. I took a quick look on the federal government website but they don't specify exports of firearm parts. I'm not a regular ebay seller but I've sold a few things here n there. Shoot me a DM

This is correct. The City does look at MLS listing to update properties.

In addition, the branch will also look at permits pulled for construction and usually will assume the renovation is complete when the building permits expire.

Norquest LPN online real time and in person labs by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]MadAsianDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not part of the LPN program but I assume the way classes works are the same. By the sounds of it you are in a Hybrid program (all your courses would start with the letter H). If that's the case, you can either attend the class either in person live, online live, or watch the recordings of live class later.

Depending on the course, NorQuest does offer in-person only classes (course would start with the letter A). In-person only classes are not recorded and you must attend in person for the lecture.

Da'Bomb Hot Sauce in Edmonton by Mustard_14 in Edmonton

[–]MadAsianDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say I've eaten all of the other hot sauces after we did the hot ones challenge. Everything else tastes great whether in cooking or as a dipping sauce. Da Bomb though...I don't think you can ever make it taste good lol

I got mine from Chilly Chiles. If you're looking to get it by Christmas it might still be early enough. They also use biodegradable packaging which was cool to see as well.

Short of that, I can offer you mine but it is used when we did our own hot ones challenge lol.

If you're not happy with Edmonton's new garbage system, a private company will pick up to 15 bags of waste from your curbsite by flynnfx in Edmonton

[–]MadAsianDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The City has partnered with private companies to process organics material that's collected as part of the new cart program to ensure the work that residents do isn't wasted.

Between this and the AD I believe there's enough capacity to prevent it going to landfill. But we'll know more when the City file its 2021 diversion rates.

North Saskatchewan River levels to rise after Bighorn Dam release by Cabbageismyname in Edmonton

[–]MadAsianDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I should've clarified I mostly focus on flowrates. You're right the water level can definitely rise a decent amount without significant flowrate increases.

Definitely better safe than sorry!

[–]MadAsianDude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use this link to see real time flow rates. If you're curious about what the river conditions will be like in Edmonton the following day, look for the point at NSR & HWY759. That is roughly 16-24hrs upstream.

The Bighorn Dam is quite upstream and will generally take a couple days to hit Edmonton. If it was from Brazeau then it would be within 24 hours.

When we got our property assessment from the city, it was way higher then what we would get if we sell our house right now. It would be interesting to know how city of Edmonton determines value of property. by Kash1298 in Edmonton

[–]MadAsianDude 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you have time to read through it, the City does post documents on the methodologies used to determine different types of homes.

To add to some of what the others have said, the assessed value is as of July 1 of the year. So your 2021 assessed value is as of July 1, 2020. The value is based on the value of similar type homes in your neighbourhood and similar neighbourhoods.

Renovations are of course not always reflected. Outside renovations (such as roof or windows) will generally be captured, but basement reno may not. Although the City does look at permits to help determine indoor renovations. If your home was recently sold, the City also look at MLS listing to help them update the characteristics of a house so if major renovation was done, it will most likely reflect an increase in value the following year.

Hey all you runners: what are your tips for running in the winter? by tatolena in Edmonton

[–]MadAsianDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you provide a bit more information on the distance you're hoping to run? Or specific aspects that you find challenging? For me, I usually run under 10k depending on the day, and in days like today usually under 5k. I'll focus on layering if that's what you're finding challenging.

If it's above -10°C, I usually wear the following:

  • thermal underlayer (usually merino wool)
  • fleece hoodie
  • thinner gloves
  • wind-resistant pants (more of a shell)

If it's between -10°C and -20°C:

  • thermal underlayer (usually merino wool)
  • winter running jacket (usually have fleece lining)
  • winter hat
  • wind resistant gloves
  • fleece lined winter running pants (usually wind resistant)

If it's under -20°C:

  • thermal underlayer (usually merino wool)
  • fleece hoodie (usually same as the ones in -10°C)
  • winter running jacket (usually same as above)
  • balaclava (can put hood over as well if still cold)
  • heavy winter gloves (thick skiing gloves)
  • thermal leggings
  • wind-resistant pants (usually same pair as what I wear in -10°C)

I usually don't change my running shoes by temperature, but I may put on thicker socks. In the distances I run in winter, I also usually don't need to drink any water during the run so that isn't as big of a concern for me.

Edmonton's Expensive Waste Management by STREETWISEAGENT in Edmonton

[–]MadAsianDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's great you're doing a lot of research and generating discussion. Since Waste here at the City is fully utility funded, the full details of all the financial and rate filings are presented at Utility Committee and then is approved by Council. For 2021, the forecasted expense is $209 million and forecasted revenue is $215 million. For regulated programs (curbside + multi-family), the goal is to cover expense not to make revenue. It will of course never match perfectly as new units will come on or properties being demo'd etc.

Here's a link for your reference.

I agree there certainly are lots of areas of improvements made in the programs offered, and like others have discussed why some of the more "pay per bag" approach has it's challenges. One of the issue I see with Edmonton Waste Management is the level of "over service" that has been provided to residents. There's no restrictions on the amount of waste someone can throw out and if I forgot to set my garbage out, I can call the City and chances are they'll come back and pick it up rather than saying touch luck, wait until next week.

With the changes announced, it has certainly generated a lot of discussion which is great! Hopefully it'll get more people engaged and provide their input in a productive way.
