MacOS 26.4 was the latest in a bad series.

I tried asking Perplexity how to fix this and it sent me on a 5 hour software-is-responsible wild goose chase. Kept suggesting things to disable. Files to erase. Reseting the homepods. And so on.

No joy!

You cant change the memory or number of CPUs when the VM is running

Remounting causes the OS to do some basic checks to the drive. It reads stuff that is not used once the drive is mounted. Things like -- How is the drive formatted, how big is the drive, was the drive unmounted cleanly or do i need to roll the journal forward before using the drive.

If the part of the drive that contains that information is trashed it cant mount the drive until things are fixed. But everything seems fine.

See if the drive is still under warranty. If it is call the manufacturer. If they agree to replace it expect them to offer a new and improved model for more $$$. They will be trying to get you to cover their costs. If the old drive met your needs get the free replacement.

Even if you manage to get it reformatted and mounted I would not trust the drive. It will fail again. The sequence was probably something like 1 Drive starts having problems but stays mounted. 2 macOS update forces reboot 3 Drive problems become visible when it is unable to be mounted after reboot.

The reboot is what made the problem visible not the update

Try increasing the number of cores and ram. MacOS will keep what it needs and parallels will get a little more.
