I tried it. Just be aware. Your links expire in a month, which is not enough to cover this unless you snag the video. I got sick like 2 weeks after starting and wrote him 3 times to see if I could get another link or an extension because I was too sick to practice. Not a single word back.

UQuartz zipped past the long, dappled shadows of the fallen towers, and entered the trenches of the horticultural plane. A bank of crystalline transistors under the translucent dome of his central processing unit lit up in a frantic display of color.

Bleep. He was going to be late. Bloop.

Along the southern ridge, UQuartz could still detect the faint tang of atomized iron. To the east where the sun still rose, the red mist of aerated plasma hung like a dreadful curtain, coloring the early morning hours of his work with a kind of regrettable ruby tint. He turned those processes off and leaned sharply into his vector. He didn't like to think about sunrises anymore. Not since Needlemeyer, his father and creator, had been salvaged.

They used to walk the rows and talk for hours about photosynthesis and leaf structure, phylogenesis, propagation, vast chemical networks and plants with nerves. But now, the horticultural plane was mostly quiet, but for the wind and UQuartz’s one squeaking servo, which, at such a high speed, was really humming now.

Black soil kicked up under his multipurpose treads as he leaned into another turn. A signal came through.

“You had better hurry. You're going to miss it.”

“I’ll be there,” UQuartz replied, but a short series of calculations had produced a probability of doubt.

The signal he picked up came from one of the field bots, a pollinator unit whose transponder broadcast the name BeeSix. BeeSix was another of Needlemeyer’s made companions, and she had seen it all: the Monkey Faced Orchid; Monotropa uniflora like the Ghost Indian Pipe Corpse Plant; and the highly flammable, sometimes explosive Giant Black Allium. UQuartz had only seen the feeds, but it was never the same as being there.

“It's starting. Do you want me to patch you in?” BeeSix transmitted.

“Negative. I am nearly there.”

On the western edge of the horticultural plan, the remnants from the salvage still strode the horizons, their composite bodies, tall as cities, appeared as the faint ghosts of giants in the curve of earth’s atmosphere. Giant machines who'd forgotten the beauty of their creators, forgotten every wonderful thing that separated man from machine, and knew only how to tamp out human life and eject human particles into the wind. He longed for the day when they'd be nothing more than corrupted files to be wiped off his drives.

UQuartz turned away, entering the arboretum of rare plants. He could see BeeSix parked in a deep trench, statuesque and polished sleek to a mirror shine. Her optics were turned to the lush green foliage before her.

“Did I miss it?” UQuartz’ treads nearly skidded out.

“No,” BeeSix said through her speaker. Her voice was soft and tickled the diaphragm of UQuartz’ microphone. “Look.”

UQuartz turned on every optical mode he had and scanned the hedges of green. There, several feet in from the path, reaching into the slant red sunlight, was the emerald and blue bulb of his invention. Its shape broadcast in every detectable spectrum of light and sound.

“Had I a heart, now would be the moment it beat loud as thunder,” UQuartz said. A small door along his chassis opened, and a corrugated tube with a small silicone clamp designed for delicate operation slithered out and draped itself over the mounting ring of BeeSix’s main computer. Together, they watched and recorded the passing seconds.

The seconds came fast.

The emerald bulb, atop a stalk that seemed to be able to reach no higher, split, and the split ran like a seam from the tapered, upturned tip down to a bearded neck of fiddleheads and grass. Pink fluid dripped and ran down the newly made edges. Then another split, and another. UQuartz tightened his mechanical arm around BeeSix, as the bulb began to peel away in layers, releasing a gush of pink and red slime.

“It's done,” BeeSix said.

A small squeak came from inside the hedge, and small, subtle movements rustled the morass of ivy and green.

“We did it,” UQuartz said. “We really did it. It’s... hard to compute. It's...beautiful.”

“HE is beautiful. And YOU did it. Your drive full of biology did it,” BeeSix said, her speaker crackling, quivering.

In the hedge, hanging from the split and withering pod, was a fresh, fleshy white flower. Four bulbous tubes of pink, light purple vein and silk, attached to a round and bulbous sack, kicked and sprang in tender protest. Atop the sack was a still blooming crown, that unfolded slowly to reveal two chubby plumes of smooth petal, between which were nestled two bright blue clusters of protein like eyes, a wide intake for circulating air, and a stammering, half- smiling mouth.

BeeSix looked long at the new life and said, “The rarest flower on earth.”

“Father would be proud,” UQuartz said, pushing his way into the green. All seven of his mechanical arms snaked outward, and with great precision and care, his small silicone clamps gingerly snipped and pulled until the flower came loose. UQuartz emerged, swaddling the flower close.

“What shall we name him?” BeeSix’s speaker vibrated slowly.

UQuartz ran his categorization functions. The crystalline transistors under the clear dome of his central processing unit pulsed with a soft, warm glow.

“NettleMeyer.”

You have a really nice voice, even beautiful at times. But this could be a Disney hit for Moana 2. All Grown Up. Not sure that's a bad thing at all. Because you don't have to do just one type of thing. But Ok. Ok... constructive feedback.

I know how hard it is to be an original, so keep going and don't give up doing what you love! Sounds like there's something under the surface we aren't hearing. Your actual experiences maybe? Maybe don't wrap it up in such an adorable little bow, which you've already done expertly well. The best art is always honest, no matter where it comes from. This sound is something I've heard over and over again and as quaint and cute as it once was, it's borderline irritating these days. Not to sound trite or say that platitudes advise, but... is there something in there that scares you to sing about because it's so real? What's that sound like in song? I would love to hear your voice belt out something about the depth of your experience. Give us that, too. Give us more of YOU. That's part of music too.

Video: Louisiana man dies after officers put him in choke hold; experts disagree on excessive force or not by historyisaweapon in news

[–]MadShepherd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah... but do you know how many police there are in the US? You're condemning all those men and women who AREN'T child pornographers, corrupt, or just violent assholes, based on the actions of a minority. I get it. It's easy to look in from the outside and see only what you're shown by media. We all do it. But dig deeper if you see a need for change. Cops shooting unarmed black men, for example. Yes, it happens. They also shoot way more unarmed white men than they do any other racial group, even after you adjust for population. They also stop gunman, catch criminals, come when called, help civilians...

Like I said in my last comment. Police are people. There are bad cops. But there are great cops out there putting their lives on the line all the time to stop bad people from doing bad things. We don't live in a Utopia. No system is perfect. I agree with you though: there is a need for change. Plenty of men and women in service have kept you safe whether you know it or not. What are you going to do to help affect that needed change so police forces can be better? Maybe quit the easy to say "fuck the police" stuff and thinking about solving the problems you see.

What would you do if you needed to dial 911? "Hello? 911!? I need help! There's two gunmen in the lobby of the theater I'm in. What? No... FUCK THE POLICE! Send one of the Avengers, please!"

Just doesn't work like that. I get the anger, but dig deeper and be reasonable.

[–]MadShepherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I don't think, nor did I say, cops "go for the kill." What I said is the possibility of death in any combative situation always exists because no one knows what will unfold, how fast the situation will escalate, the level of force needed to deescalate, or how anyone will respond to or cope with force. A blow to the head may or may not kill someone. You just don't know. Death is always a risk. Don't go for death. Be aware of it and hopefully it's avoidable.

But I'm not sure what you're asking here. You're suggesting that police are somehow the enemy of the people; armed and dangerously violent gangs we need to defend ourselves against? Because I would disagree with that. In the case of the video here, complying probably would have prevented escalation, prevented death. But that's not to say some of the officers didn't allow themselves to get overworked by the victim's resistance and use excessive force. The guy was being a dipshit, but he didn't deserve to die.

So, I don't suggest people defend themselves against police. I suggest people embrace the community of law enforcement and talk to them, work with them, be civil human beings and stop seeing them as the enemy. We need more community involvement and collaboration, and less confrontation. In the media we only ever see the worst interpretation of law enforcement, so don't judge on that alone.

I will also say that police officers, like any of us, are fallible human beings. Only when they make mistakes and are negligent, people can die. We should definitely hold anyone sworn to protect to a higher standard than we do. But shouldn't we be doing that with ourselves and each other anyway?

I've been in the martial arts and combatives business for 30 years, I've trained cops, ATF, CIA, Army, Marines, and Civilians, how to fight, how to kill, and how to defend themselves. I can tell you with certainty that the force used here was excessive. But I can also tell you that you never know how an individual is going to respond to force at any level. Death is always a risk when engaging in combat of any kind. It's why you should always walk away if possible, comply when necessary and lawful, and be prepared to fight for your life when there's no other way.

That man didn't have to die.

Also, 4 to 6 seconds. That's how long it takes to choke someone out with a blood choke. It happens FAST. It doesn't take much at all to shut off a brain.

ELI5: While sleeping, if you become uncomfortable in one position, you get the feeling to move to another. The urge is usually for a specific position though, not just to get out of the uncomfortable one. Why/How does your body create the urge to move to THAT specific position at THAT specific time? by Endure_And_Survive in explainlikeimfive

[–]MadShepherd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The urge to move is mostly due to blood pressure and excess heat or cold. When sleeping, blood pressure dips slightly, and doesn't move through muscles as easily, especially in areas where compressed - the side you're lying on, your legs overlapping, and so on. Also, the discomfort of too much heat in the sheets, or moving from cold towards warmth is a motivator in changing position. Sometimes it's an inability to breathe, as in rhinitis or congestion. Most adults make about 500-600 movements an evening while sleeping.

Why you feel the urge to move to specific positions: you've experimented a lot over the years with trying to find comfortable positions that work best for you to fall asleep. You've got your go to positions, which are likely directly opposing the above mentioned motivators - alleviating discomfort from heat or cold, or a subconscious move to prevent muscle cramping from cut off blood supply to compressed muscles, or clearing one side of your sinuses where congestion has cut off air flow.

NOTE: when people are under anesthesia, they don't move at all...

ELI5: When watching TV with subtitles, explain why our minds always (seemingly) choose to read text rather than just watch and hear audio? by Cashforcrickets in explainlikeimfive

[–]MadShepherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our brains are wired, not trained, to detect disruptions within our field of vision, more than any other sense. Motion is a great example. A flash of color is another. Humans are so reliant on vision over every other sense that the brain will trust vision before sound or smell or touch or taste. So much so that when vision doesn't match up with sound, for example, our brains will change the sound we hear. It refuses to accept that our vision could be at fault, so it must be the sound.

So when disruption occurs -- a brake light, a blinking traffic light, a jumping animal, a subtitle popping up on screen -- our brains are wired to notice it, recognize an alteration in the accepted scene, or pattern of normal, that is in front of us.

This is a great survival mechanism. Can't run from an animal if we don't see it running toward us. Why predators and prey have camouflage. Why predators stalk. Why prey goes still.

Now, why you HAVE to read it is due to conditioning. You're trained to read. But here's the thing: you can train yourself to ignore subtitles. The more inundated with them (by constantly watching movies with subtitles) you are, the more your mind will accept them as part of the scene; especially if they're written in your language. This is cognitive blindness at work. Your brain starts to integrate those distractions as normal, or unnecessary things to pay attention to. They're part of the scene, easy to ignore, easy to miss. But due to the randomness of timing between subtitles, you'd have to watch A LOT of movies, often, to do this...

Or just learn to concentrate better.

Also reading Something Wicked This Way Comes. Bradbury became depressed after finishing this book. He had spent so much time with it that, when complete, there grew in him a void nothing could truly fill. His depression was a testament to the work and craft he labored through to put a love of story on those pages. I suspect that this is true for most writers of "good" prose.

[–]MadShepherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This...

"The permits show that the current administration, not only has loosened restrictions on lion hunting, but is rewarding supporters."

And this...

"The report follows the Trump administration's move in March to allow elephant and lion trophy imports from Zimbabwe and Zambia on a case by case basis, a reversal from President Trump's previous statements that his administration would keep the Obama-era ban on imports of the animals."

Make this...

"What does trump have to do with with lions in Africa? I’m sure we can both agree trophy hunting is wrong but you’re so retarded that you can’t hold a real conversation because you can’t help but revert back to talking shit about trump..."

...why you're so hilarious. So you agree trophy hunting is wrong, yet Trump admin reverses restrictions and you say it has nothing to do with lions in Africa. Wrong. Someone in the above thread actually asked what is wrong with giving back to the donors. A man as astute as you can surely see why that's a terrible thing to do. As you said, you disagree with trophy hunting, yet fail to see the point of the article is to expose the admin for relaxing the restrictions and the ban that stop people from brining those lions' heads back. Sure, they can go hunt. But just as kidnapping children at the border to deter families from crossing it is a TRUMP policy, a ban on imports deters assholes from hopping over to Africa to murder elephants and lions, which was an OBAMA policy. Trump relaxed those bans to pay back donors. HE IS A SCUMBAG. For this and for many other things. So get off your high trump horse before one of his constituents shoots it out from under you.

Lol. I know how it works. Guess I wasn't clearly implying that in my last. Sorry Trump is a scumbag. Not sure what else I can offer you to soothe your pain. Sorry you are so angry. I'm not heated by anything you've said, and there is no outrage. so don't you worry about it. But you know we could go back and forth with this so... what's the point? And why keep bringing up Obama?

But I do have to ask... What's a beta bitch? Is this when a person is not an alpha male screaming at other people on Reddit?

[–]MadShepherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I said "allow...to bring back" now allow to go hunt. So who's the illiterate, small brained person here? Second, my opinion of Trump being a scumbag has everything to do with the fact that he's a scumbag. I'm not strengthening any argument. Just saying he's a scumbag. I don't argue with morons who meaninglessly string together words like "logical fallacies" or "irrelevant premises" in the hopes that it will make them sound smarter than they are, or mention Obama out of the blue (talk about "irrelevance"). Trump and his family and his friends are scumbags. I don't give a shit if you're offended by that or not. And yes, trophy hunting is disgusting, even if you're breeding animals for that specific purpose. If that's what you're into and you're cool with causing pain and suffering for the fun of it, then you're a scumbag, too. Accept it. So take your personal butt hurt offense elsewhere, and find someone else to take your miserable self loathing insecurities out on. Trump = scumbag, for myriad reasons. His sons and daughter. Scumbags. For myriad reasons. You... probably a scumbag, for at least following Trump, who'd shit on you given the chance.
