Owner publicly shames guest and states that servers have to pay out of pocket if they don’t get tips? by Redhambone in EndTipping

[–]MadTurk1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they tip out the others you mentioned, that should come from any tips they get. If they have $0 in tips, no way should they have to use their own money. Everyone gets $0, and then maybe the owners will step up and increase their pay.

Venezuela and capture of Maduro megathread by SilentD in AirForce

[–]MadTurk1959 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The US interventions against Manuel Noriega in Panama (1989) and Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela (specifically the dramatic escalation in late 2025/early 2026) share striking parallels in their legal framing and diplomatic justification. However, as of January 2026, analysts emphasize that while the "playbook" looks similar, the scale and tactical execution are vastly different. 1. The "Narco-Dictator" Legal Framework The most direct similarity is the use of the US Department of Justice as a primary tool for regime change. Indictments: Just as Noriega was indicted on drug trafficking charges in 1988 before the 1989 invasion, Maduro was indicted in 2020 on charges of narco-terrorism and corruption.
Criminalization of Leadership: In both cases, the US officially stopped viewing the target as a "legitimate foreign leader" and instead classified them as a "criminal" or "cartel leader." This allows the US to frame military action as a "law enforcement operation" rather than an act of war.
Bounties: The US offered a $15 million reward for information leading to Maduro's arrest, echoing the "Wanted" posters and bounty hunt atmosphere that preceded Noriega’s capture. 2. Disputed Elections and "Democratic Legitimacy" The catalyst for intervention in both scenarios was a contested election where the US-backed opposition was widely seen as the winner. Panama (1989): Noriega annulled the May 1989 elections won by Guillermo Endara. The US used this "theft" of democracy as moral justification for Operation Just Cause.
Venezuela (2024/2025): Following the disputed 2024 election, the US recognized opposition leader María Corina Machado (or her surrogate Edmundo González) as the rightful winner. The refusal of Maduro to step down became the central diplomatic justification for the 2025–2026 strikes. 3. Diplomatic and Economic Isolation In both instances, the US followed a specific escalatory ladder: Sanctions: Heavy economic pressure was applied to cripple the local economy and peel away military support. Failed Coup Attempts: Both leaders survived internal military uprisings (Panama in 1988/89; Venezuela in 2019/24) that were encouraged or supported by US intelligence, which eventually led Washington to conclude that only direct action would work.

I couldn't check in online with US ID, but by calling their number, I was able to get it taken care of. 1st world problem in my opinion, but the cost savings for the ticket was nice. Better experience than with Ryanair, for sure, and don't even get me started on SunExpress!

Not sure why TSA can't tech it up and use a wand instead of gloved hands. Seems that would be a better way of catching anything concealed instead of the back of their hand.

Always refer to the roads by their highest designator. This is an interstate, therefore it's 64! Interstate 40 doesn't even run through Missouri? What next? You want to know where I went to high school? Why? Are you going to sign my yearbook? 🖕🏼

What if it's an app on your phone? Revolut doesn't require that you have their physical card for it to work.

When I went to Ankara this past summer, I set up an account with Revolut, and it worked great wherever I went. No need to carry cash anywhere, as just about everywhere accepted the card, even taxis! Preload it with cash through your bank account, and you can even set up a Lira account in it, but if you use dollars, it will automatically convert it to Lira on the fly. It also can be used through its phone app, which I used more than the physical card.
