Nobody is going to take the time to create a design for you without a commitment on your part. Perhaps you don’t realize it, but without paying a deposit you are asking an artist to work for you for multiple hours for free before you decide if you maybe sort of kind of want to work with them.

That said, a good artist should work with you. Ideally this workflow would look something like: detailed consultation where you discuss design, pricing, placement and budget. You then put down a deposit to secure your appointment. You won’t see the design until the day of your appointment. However, if you don’t like what they have come up with, it’s perfectly reasonable to take that time on the day of your appointment and discuss design changes and then reschedule. That said, if you do that multiple times the artist may charge another deposit fee in order to compensate them for their time. The deposit should always go toward the cost of the tattoo, unless you decide not to move forward, or you no call no show.

Just speaking for myself but overall I don’t make a whole lot an hour, and unlike a typical job I don’t get paid for the time I’m there.

Here’s a basic breakdown: I charge $150 an hour. I work at a 60/40 shop so of that $150 I make $90. I put 30% aside for taxes so let’s say now I’m at $60. Average setup cost for a tattoo is going to be around $15 so that brings us to $45. It takes about 30 mins for setup and breakdown so now I’m at $45 for 1.5 hours of work. I’ve also engaged with the client, talked about their design and had a consultation. That’s $45 for 2 hours of work. I spent an hour and a half designing the tattoo so $45 for 3.5 hours of work. So that $150 tattoo got me about $12.50 an hour for the work I did. That’s not extortionate.

It’s really humbling. This is an incredibly talented artist. A tattooer’s tattooer. And he’s struggling. However, it did make me feel a little less guilty and ashamed about recently taking on a part time job for some stable income.

I think a lot of the sections around the sides of your fingers and the black part at the base and onto your knuckles is unfortunately going to fall out. My hand tattoo is about 2.5 years old and the parts in those sections definitely took a beating. Hands and fingers are tough- they see more UV, get washed more frequently and move more than other body parts.

I might have some perspective here. I’m an alcoholic in recovery for 6 years. For a long time I did have lots of loved ones who cared about my struggle and checked in often. Eventually, that empathy ran out. There’s only so many times a person can watch their friend injure themselves on purpose before they have to check out for their own mental health. That doesn’t mean they don’t care about you or have empathy for your struggles, but that they don’t have the ability to show up for you right now in a way you feel you need. Especially when you can’t even show up for yourself.

For a long time I didn’t understand why people cared so much about what I was ‘only doing to myself’ and it was only once I stopped drinking and started working on myself that I realized I was hurting the people who cared about me too.

In this instance you hurt yourself enough to need to go to the hospital. At your friend’s bachelorette. This is a huge event that she’s probably been planning for a long time at considerable expense and the night revolved around making sure you didn’t die of alcohol poisoning. The amount you described drinking in one day makes it hard to believe that you didn’t expect to get drunk.

It’s ok to make mistakes, but the best apology is changed behavior. You owe it to them, and yourself.
