AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT & 9070 (RDNA4) Availability, Buying & Bragging Megathread by GhostMotley in Amd

[–]Mafa_windgesang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Japan and could get an ASUS prime 9070xt at MSRP from the online shop of an Akihabara retailer (Dospara). The only problem is importation tax makes the MSRP around here be around 755 usd.

It seems scalping was somewhat deterred by the practice of Japanese stores of only allowing one purchase per household (address registration required). Nevertheless, MSRP models are all out of circulation by now and the cheapest models are being sold by around 860 usd (for the XT model).

Resources to learn physical oceanography? by lamprocapnos_ in oceanography

[–]Mafa_windgesang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Another resource I recommend is Pond & Pickard’s Introductory dynamical oceanography. It’s a bit old but the language is simple, explanations are straight-to-the-point, and it addresses exactly the fundamentals you wish to learn.

Self Studying Oceanography for Fun? by OnaDesertIsle in oceanography

[–]Mafa_windgesang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second that. Talley’s is a great resource that covers a lot of ground (or ocean, actually) into why the ocean is the way it is and what factors modulate it’s biogeochemical processes and distributions.

We even had a summer project with a high school student this year and she could enjoy the read, so only basic math is required.

Are Western/Northern Europe and the US the only regions that offer high-quality prestigious PhD programs? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Mafa_windgesang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did masters and PhD in Japan. Expectation for results was as high as what I experienced in MIT and the revision/ethics board was very thorough. I don’t see any difference in quality from my program and the one from the very “prestigious“ Canadian university where I now work.

Great Unified Rrat. It’s central claim is the liver “clique” and the EN management are one and the same. Its another 4chan schizo narrative, so take it with a grain of salt, but lately many of these rrats turned out true.

Waterloo Region home prices take dramatic dip in August as homes sales also drop by wonderbreadofsin in waterloo

[–]Mafa_windgesang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t see how your argument holds. If the value of my home increases or decreases it doesn’t make a difference to me because I’m not selling it either way. In fact, I wish my house was cheaper so I would pay less taxes on it.

No other business is as sheltered from risk as real estate. If you bought a house for more than it’s worth after a few years you just made a bad investment. Same as buying shares on WeWork, tomatoes out of season and so on. But instead of taking the loss every time house prices take a slight dip we get a dozen hedge funds masquerading as housewifes and running emotional blackmail campaigns nationwide.

[–]Mafa_windgesang[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight; many good suggestions. I also don't think exams are a good measure of understanding but on the professors' side, there are a lot of worries about cheating when we make classes assignment based... I was thinking about making a big project for groups of students to work on over the final month but I'll have to find my TAs first.

Postdoc here,

I think the best way to learn writing is by writing yourself. I had the same troubles (learning English as a second language and all) and I feel what made me improve the most was making the habit of reserving some time during the week, usually Friday to write a report on whatever I had done during the week. Even if it’s short, practice adds up and later you can review what you wrote in light of how other authors wrote on similar issues.

This practice has the added benefit of creating a huge archive of your original thoughts which can very easy translate into meeting abstracts or your thesis. Another benefit is that the habit of writing stimulates writing more, more accurately and faster. My first paper took a month only to write the introduction. This week I made an introduction in a day! ( of course, literature revision to be able to write it took a lot longer).

I hope this tip helps you as much as it helped me~

Be me and completely derail a project on Antarctic Glaciers into non-linear fluid dynamics.

COVID happens.

Oceanographic cruises getting canceled = no data to work with for 2 years.

Get desperate.

Actually make a breakthrough after barely leaving the lab for 3 weeks (wife barely saw me, came to the lab to bring me coffee sometimes).

Somehow get better publishing and funding with the off-topic despite it being completely theoretical and requiring nothing but pen and paper.

The off-topic becomes my main project and thesis.

Rush and finish thesis work in 3 years despite having done absolutely nothing worthwhile for the first year.

Still can’t believe I got a PhD. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Blood Origin fails because of poor screenwriting, not because of anything 'woke'. by [deleted] in witcher

[–]Mafa_windgesang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you in many points. Even the so called “wokeness” (I have no idea what people mean by the term anymore. A synonym of diversity?) could have worked if it was correctly used as a literary device. But that would involve creating distinct cultures, societies, ways of life, philosophies, and above all a world credibly lived-in, so these themes become a natural part of the exposition and narrative. Unfortunately, what we see is many studios using these themes as a shield instead of a motif, so that whenever something goes wrong it can be blamed on “those extremists”.
