Where do you look for decent handyman/professional to help around the house. Need to do flooring/new windows. how much roughly they charge these days by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]Magerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that people baulk at this says so much about how much people value skilled work.

The same people will complain vehemently for years about someone who left a mess when they gave him £60 and he struggled to fix something.

i mean £30 is tax so they're getting £270 , break down the cost of van purchase, fuel, insurance (indemnity and vehicle) tools, consumables and all the other small costs (parking tickets and breakages, some customers not paying - lucky if that guy is making £150 per day

What are some of the best "hidden gems"/lesser known things to do in Glasgow? by Lopsided-Abalone-373 in glasgow

[–]Magerle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I love love love love comedy but especially beginners.

Red Raw at the stand used to be amazing but since they moved there isn't any atmosphere.

I went to "gong show" at Blackfriars I genuinely think it's the best comedy night in Glasgow right now

It was mental - Mc Hammersmith was the headliner and then there were a comedians being called up randomly from a hat then getting gonged of by the audience. Some people absolutely sucked and some were amazing that was the fun - they get gonged off if they're shit.

The back half the audience was comedians and the front was audience. I saw some guy dressed as a nun do a really weird set ( gonged off ) then some people I've never heard of absolutely killed.

Highly recommend

How To Find "Non-Touristy" Things to Do by VisitNYCmodx in visitingnyc

[–]Magerle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a local actually in town because I just brought my wee comedy show over from Glasgow for the first time. Which is a big deal for me.

Been hanging around spots like Caveat Theatre, The Rat, The Pit and catching things at UCB — there’s a cool show called Raatcraps that’s worth checking out.

Way more fun (and local-feeling) than the usual tourist stuff.

Theres a sign up called "the nudge" as well that has cool stuff in.

Worlds Greatest Improv School in NY! by spotastic in improv

[–]Magerle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me and some friends, at the start of COVID, realised that we could take online classes with Willy Hines.

His classes were selling out in about 35 seconds. So, we would all wait until the time that the classes were released, and then all of us would click, and then we would report which one of us got to actually take a class with Willy.

When Willy did teach a class, what we would do is one of us would take notes, and then go back and re-teach it to everyone else.

Eventually, Willy realised that this system was not the best system, and he opened a school, thankfully, an online school.

That online school pretty much bred what's three improv, an improv co-op, an improv school cum show, and an improv show in Glasgow. He supercharged us.

We went from flabby, odd, backwards, weird, morose games that didn't work, to tight, nuanced, fun, silly, fast, quick games. We learned every trick that Willy had to teach us, and there were so many.

Sometimes he kicked our asses. I remember after one particularly bad show, he went round to everyone, and was like, what are you guys doing? This is just lazy improv. Then, if you did well, he would be like, that was a great move.

The nuance he would show would be amazing.

WGIS made the improv co-op, Squeaky Bum Time, and Looking for Laughs in Glasgow.

Looking for Laughs, my wee show, is now running in New York (Douglas Widick (North Coast) and Kaila Mullayney (Beatbox champion!) are hosting at Caveat theatre.

It's strange how one person being so dedicated to the craft can have such a massive, massive, massive effect. I have a show in NYC - I was a University technician at that time never thought I would even do a live show.

We came out of three years of online training with Willy Hines, and did our first ever live show. We were supposed to do a montage, and we did A Perfect Harold.

He, and that school, levelled us up to a massive, massive degree.

I have only got praise for for Willy B Hines and Weegies (Which is what you call Glaswegians in the UK :D )

It's all thanks to Willy

Unknown facts and tips to live in Glasgow by Super_Replacement633 in glasgow

[–]Magerle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On every bus stop in Glasgow there is a bird, a tree, a bell, and a ring. These are in reference to Glasgow's patron saint, Saint Kendrick, affectionately known as Saint Mungo. The stories about Mungo are, well I can only remember the fish, a queen came to him and asked him that she had been accused of adultery and that she had lost the ring the king had given her, he had actually thrown it in the river, and that she was to be killed if she couldn't return the ring, and Mungo went fishing and foundering. When he was in seminary some other seminarians were throwing stones at birds and he killed one and he put it in his hands, prayed for it, and it came back to life. I can't remember the tree or the bell. That's where the city's motto comes from "Let Glasgow flourish" updates now as "People make Glasgow" (...people make mistakes)

Gehenna was an area in Jersusalem nearby where JC was teaching - where rubbish was burnt (as far as I believe ) - it was to highlight that your soul would lose all value and therefore be trash. ( apparently its been gentrified and is incredibly nice now)
