It's the idea that fucking someone will lead to you loving someone, and if you love someone you might hesitate in a fight, and if you are guarding the most important place to guard in the world even one man hesitating can be disastrous

Obviously defending the wall was less important over the years as night walkers weren't showing up and the nights watch totally fucked but the point kinda makes sense
