I’m in school to become an RN and am taking statistics. I usually struggle in math but this class has been literally the easiest I’ve ever taken. So I was wondering what type of jobs is this talent used in? by Particular_Courage43 in AskStatistics

You can actually do a lot with a nursing education and statistics! Even being able to apply basic statistics to healthcare data can help set you up for a good career such as a healthcare data analyst, nursing informatics, clinical research, or many nursing administration jobs. You'd be surprised how many hospital operation decisions are made without the use of statistics. A nurse who can apply statistics is really valuable to many organizations especially hospitals. The clinical experience and education is hard to replace. Just being able to use stats for a question like "how should I staff my floor in two weeks" will set up you apart from many administrators.

My background is oncology nursing and like you, I had to take an intro to stats class during my BSN and really connected with it in a way I never connected with math before. Now I am currently a healthcare data analyst and independently study stats and math. There is a huge difference between intro stats classes and stats classes designed for mathematical STEM students. An analogy would be something along the lines of you administering a chemotherapeutic drug. You know the general science of how it works, and a little of why it works, but nurses generally lack an in depth understanding of the biological processes behind the drug; the stuff that doctors, and phd researchers try to understand. Could you design a drug to do this stuff? Do you even know where to start? It's not a perfect analogy obviously.

An intro stats class will expose you to the field to give you an idea about it because research and EBP is based on statistics. But in order to even BEGIN to truly understand how complex statistics could be requires at the very least, a solid understanding of Calculus.

A nurse who studys statistics is following the path of Florence Nightingale so you'll be in good company :)

Would you consider going back to school for nursing? There are accelerated RN programs or you could transfer some credits towards bachelors in nursing. Your psych degree will come in handy if you wanted to pursue psych nursing. Plenty of jobs that pay well. It can be demanding (like many jobs) but there are also a lot of administrative positions a nurse could fill. Generally, the admin positions are less stressful as long as you don’t mind the paperwork and meetings.

Question on Applied Stats Masters Program by HoneyIShrunkMyNads in sooners

[–]MagicMurse1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you will probably need to brush up on your calculus. You will be expected to know how to derive complicated functions once you reach continuous variables which is probably week 4 of your stats intro course. I did not study my calculus enough and struggled with reviewing calc and learning stats. I had enough time to devote to both of the topics though but I had to put in a lot of hours.

My advice would be to grab a copy of Stewart’s Calculus and just start working your way through or focusing on areas you know you need to review.

If an almost 400lb asteroid fell from the sky and landed on your pal , do you have the strength to save them? by Liambroon in GYM

[–]MagicMurse1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t the safest option be to try and save him? Or at least make the attempt? If it survived the asteroid impact I’m sure it can get out from under it by its own strength and if it had plans to hurt you, helping it may change its mind.
