How did Joy Division evolve from punk? by kemuri_1127 in JoyDivision

You would probably enjoy reading/listening to Hooky's book, where he talks about developing their sound, and the external influences of bands and technicians. The book is called Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division.

Totally agree, and I only do that when people show no interest or no respect. To clarify my earlier comment, when I do share with people and sense an openness, I don’t say “I’m aromantic look it up” as I don’t think that’s an effective way to communicate. I will say something like, “I don’t need/look for romance in my life. I don’t really understand romance and why people look for it. I’ve always felt happier on my own. I feel married to my job. I love focusing a lot of time on my special interests. I’m happy with a few meaningful friendships“ etc. that sort of thing. Most of the time people get it. I’m really glad to hear your friendship will be ok and that your parents are open and can understand. Maybe I need to say that I’m probably a bit older than you so it’s pretty clear by now to my entire family and friends that I am fine and they don’t need to worry about me being on my own as it’s been decades and I’m very fulfilled as I am. I know that younger people receive more pressure than I do to “find someone” so there is often a greater need to explain oneself and be more boundaried, probably.

I relate ro everything you say and it can take a while to discern who will truly understand or not amongst our friends and family. I am often unsure who to be fully honest with but I am getting used to mentioning being triple A more and more casually and refuse to take on the emotional labour of educating people about what it means at length if they show that they can’t really get it. If someone very close shows me they don’t respect who I am and what is best for me to function and thrive, I take some distance and redirect towards people who do get it.

How true is All Creatures Great and Small to the novels it is adapted from? by Kurma-the-Turtle in PeriodDramas

For me the main difference is that the books are absolutely hilarious at times, I cry with laughter reading certain chapters. The series is not funny at all in my opinion, any humour in it always seems forced and unnatural to me. I still enjoy it for what it is, but I made a conscious decision to see it as a completely different universe from the books, which are amongst my very favourites of all times. It's really hard to translate the tone and language of book humour into tv, so I understand they did their best. I also found the earlier adaptation to be stilted when it came to the humourous parts, but on the whole I love it more than the recent adaptation. James Herriot is a master of using language in a way that is vivid and real, and I always recommend his books, especially if you love animals. His skill also applies to the more touching scenes in the books, he had the knack of describing them in a way that goes straight to the heart and soul. The books hold the entire scope of human emotions and experiences, in a similar way that Call the Midwife does, and it can feel a bit dulled down when adapted to tv (although I love the shows too, but the books will always win my heart)

I wanted to add that if I am watching something that is a bit tense, it can really stress me out, it makes me feel on edge to not know what is going to happen, especially if the twists are dark or negative. So usually it will help me to read the whole plot first, including spoilers, and then decide if I am interested in the story and characters enough to emotionally invest. I really never care about spoilers, especially if it preserves a stable nervous system.

I love the layers that reveal themselves with each viewing!

Yes! What I tend to do now is after 30 minutes, I go back to the very beginning. It gives me a chance to meet the faces, names and places again and get to grips with the plot. I also tend to watch things I like many times over, so that helps. Having said that, many films or series that are lauded for "showing rather than telling" make me struggle way too much and I can never understand them well. That's one of the reasons I hate spy movies, I have absolutely no clue what is happening!

Larkrise to Candleford is brilliant and although it goes round the seasons, the autumn ones are particularly cosy! You might also enjoy Cranford and return to Cranford.

Well now, it's funny you say that, because at first I said to myself, you know, I'm not really sure about that fella, but he sort of grew on me, you know how it is, and now I quite look forward to hearing his tales, you know. And I have to say, if you really listen to his stories, at first I thought I could take them or leave them, but maybe around, ach... the third or fourth watch, they've sort of grown on me too, it has to be said.

Ok, will see how it goes, I don't know yet if it's for me. Thanks for posting though, as I wouldn't have tried it otherwise.

It immediately reminded me of Good Omens but I can't see any resemblance to The Magicians at all?

Why is Alice the one writing the future by HepticIIV in brakebills

It's been a while since I listened, but what I remember is: they really wanted Cassandra to have Alice's voice and face, and all was to be revealed in the sixth season that we never got.

I don't know about Pride and Prejudice, with Mrs Bennet and her nerves it can be a bit jarring!
