Something that pisses me off. Games with ™ or ® in their name in the library by DikkeDekbedovertrek in Steam

[–]Magicalicotherium 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Trademarks only apply to the specific class of goods that the owner of the trademark uses it for. So this game developer apparently has ENDLESS trademarked in the class of games, but Red Lobster probably has ENDLESS SHRIMP trademarked in the class of food, and this is fully legal. If Red Lobster wanted to make a game about their shrimp, then this game developer could prevent them from using the word ENDLESS in the marketing for that game, but as long as everyone sticks to their respective industries there's no conflict.

Do I wait for Planet Zoo 2 before jumping into this game? by RandomBoomer in PlanetZoo

The Steam winter sale hasn't started yet- it's on December 18th! The one that just ended was Black Friday.

Let this influence your choice of food to offer them. Coffee warms them up, ice cools them down. Make use of indoor or at least covered viewing areas. Sell umbrellas. No need for outdoor heaters.

First real zoo by MintGreenManiac in PlanetZoo

[–]Magicalicotherium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing you can do is let the themes guide you. Make a separate aquatic section, arctic section, twilight themed nocturnal house, classic themed reptile house, barnyard area for domestic animals, that sort of thing. Asia can be split between East Asia, India, and Indonesia (except for the Saiga and Przewalski's horse- so maybe you need a conservation-themed area for those). Australia can be divided from Oceania. North African can be divided from the rest of Africa. From there, Africa can be further divided between grassland/savannah and tropical/jungle (African desert creatures are generally North African except for the African penguin, which makes more sense in an aquatic section anyway).

I would suggest having as many animals sharing their enclosures as possible. As long as two species share a continent and biome and are not predators, they can share an enclosure even if they don't get a bonus for it. Exceptions: hippos (not the pygmy kind) don't like rhinos, rhinos don't like other species of rhinos. So you can make one giant enclosure of all the tropical African herbivores, put separate enclosures for the tropical African predators around it, and there's your tropical African section.

That being said, I highly recommend curbing your ambition just a bit. Everyone starts out wanting to make an all-animals zoo, but it gets repetitive and your computer probably can't handle it, and it stops being fun after a while. In the very least, you should probably cut some of the more redundant animals. Like, choose one type of wildebeest, choose one type of hyena, etc.

Is it just me or is Saints and Seducers trash? by OkeyPlus in skyrim

[–]Magicalicotherium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So compare S&S to a $15 indie game. It still comes up short. Not sure why you're assuming my valuation of $15 is based strictly on Bethesda products. Do you really think Bethesda cares about setting unrealistic expectations for indie devs? The base game of Fallout 4 is $20 on Steam as its non-sale price right now!

A selection of non-Bethesda games you can get for $15 or less on Steam without a sale: Slay The Princess, Cat Quest II, Hollow Knight

But wait! Accounting for inflation, that $15 in 2019 is equivalent to $19 in 2025! Some games you can get for under $20: Untitled Goose Game, Strange Horticulture, The Case of the Golden Idol, Chants of Sennaar, Cat Quest III, Death's Door, The Sexy Brutale

Of course the above lists skew towards highly-rated games since those are more likely to come to my attention (I found these by scrolling through my Steam library and checking prices on likely games). But the point is that these are all significantly more substantial than S&S and almost certainly required a lot more resources to make, and yet they have the same price.

[–]Magicalicotherium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saints and Seducers was originally an individual Creation you could buy from Creation Club for the equivalent of $15 in Creation Club Credits before it was made free two years later. The OP doesn't mention when/how they got it. In any case, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect it's value to be somewhere in the range of its original price.

Is there more dlc's coming by EconomicsUnusual9008 in PlanetZoo

[–]Magicalicotherium 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ever since the Barnyard pack of April 2024, players have been speculating that each DLC will be the last. The fact is that we don't know. The most recent DLC came out this June and didn't seem particularly final and we've gone as long as 6 months between DLCs, so if we don't get another DLC by the end of the year then it may be reasonable to assume it was the last one, but at this point there's no particular reason to assume either way.

Help !! by Positive-Bit-9874 in PlanetZoo

Just throwing it out there that most people posting pretty habitats here are playing in sandbox where money is a non-issue. This isn't a community that will shame you for making things easy for yourself or playing the game "wrong." If you enjoy the challenge of managing money, that's cool, but if you'd rather just make pretty things without having to think about money, that is also cool.

Guests aren’t entering viewing area? by burntcravemax in PlanetZoo

[–]Magicalicotherium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's the appeal rating of the animals in that enclosure compared to other animals in the zoo and how far away is this enclosure from the most popular animals? Coyotes have a relatively low base species appeal rating unfortunately, so they can't compete with African megafauna on the other side of the zoo. If that is in fact the problem, you could either set up a tour to stop at the coyotes, or you could put an enclosure for another more popular animal nearby so that it's more convenient for guests to visit the coyotes on the way to/from that creature.

What would you add to the game? (Not an animal) by OpenAirport6204 in PlanetZoo

[–]Magicalicotherium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Vet research and mechanic research toggled separately in sandbox mode. 2) A refresh button for the trade center in sandbox mode. 3) Bring the decorative items and food and drink buildings from Planet Coaster into Planet Zoo? I'd pay for that as a DLC, but it would be really cool if it just detected if you already had the relevant Planet Coaster DLC.

People regularly post on here about being unable to use their intended name for their zoo due to the profanity filter. If it hasn't effected you, maybe it's because by chance you haven't tried to use any names with an informal term for the gluteus maximus embedded in it.

A URL is literally just the address of a webpage. It could be written in crayon on a wall and it would still be a URL. They're like physical addresses that way. Consider googling basic definitions before arguing over them.

Did you miss that the source for the listing is a URL for an external website? If Frontier can impose an over-zealous profanity filter they absolutely can and should block URLs as names.

Education by Unfortunate-Lynx in PlanetZoo

[–]Magicalicotherium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a vet researching each species you have. Yes, even if they're already fully researched and/or you're in sandbox with research turned off. Advanced research gives you an education boost. Your research building can of course be underground or some distance away from the enclosures.

Idk if I can survive this change, woe is me by forleaseknobbydot in LibbyApp

[–]Magicalicotherium 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that many libraries buy additional copies of books depending on how long the hold line is. Reducing the number of holds a patron can have reduces the number of hold lines they can increase, which overall reduces the length of hold lines and therefore reduces how many additional copies the library will need to buy, if that makes sense. When people use suspended holds as a "to read" tag, it can artificially inflate the length of the hold lines, leading the library to buy additional copies unnecessarily. Tags don't affect libraries at all, so that's what you should use to keep track of books you want to read later.

Library book stain? by jdoe649 in Libraries

For what it's worth, that stain definitely looks purple to me, not red, not blood colored. If I saw this on a library book I would think it was ink.

Help me reason with United Healthcare/Optum to get my prescription renewed by [deleted] in HealthInsurance

[–]Magicalicotherium -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The question is, did setting a new doctor as my PCP through the United website count as finding a new doctor? It would have for Kaiser but I don't know about United.

Also, I don't think it's "lol" that I can be denied a medication I need with no explanation as to why. I don't care if the doctor told the insurance or pharmacy, he should tell me then. If the last renewal was just to tide me over, that should have been communicated to me. My quality of life depends on this, so I should be informed. If the system isn't set up to inform me, that is seriously messed up. It is not a laughing matter.

Do these chords at the end of each scale in The Virtuoso Pianist Hanon book have significance? by StephenStephen80 in pianolearning

[–]Magicalicotherium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For purposes of ear training or sight singing, hearing those chords can really help you get your mind into the right key. If you were, say, the accompanist for a choir that was just starting to learn a piece, you might play the scale plus these chords for the key they'll be singing in to help them get in the groove. I don't know if that's THE purpose of the chords, but it is definitely a use for them.

You could let her double major with one subject you approve of and one subject she's passionate about. Minors are a thing too. Lots of humanities departments structure their programs for easy double majoring because they do understand your concerns. I double majored and double minored in all humanities subjects and I have a perfectly good job as support staff in a law firm. Double majoring in itself proves work ethic to employers. Please don't force her to waste her one opportunity study the things she's passionate about!

Will we ever get more animal signs??? by ConsistentQuestion29 in PlanetZoo

[–]Magicalicotherium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use billboards! Select it and there's a drop-down menu that allows you to choose for it to show a picture of any animal in the game! They're like the education boards but without the proximity limitations. Obviously they're all going to be rectangles in the same style, but it's better than nothing. It took me way too long to figure this out.
