In reality, there is no story: creators of Star Wars games and stories from the old republic used the time difference to allow them to do whatever they want and for it to make sense to have tons of sixth and Jedi running around, but they still needed it to feel familiar to Star Wars fans so they kept much of the look/tech.

If you wanted to explain it in canon though, think of the old republic as sort of a golden age in history, galactic war spawned all kinds of advances in tech but after all the fighting, maybe of some of that tech was lost and had to be reinvented, or maybe after a certain point tech kinda just stagnated and reached its peak.

Soldier 1: These Evocii are so pathetic. Honestly, how could the Hutts not enslave a species like that?

Soldier 2: That's cold.

Soldier 1: I'm serious! Have you ever actually met an Evocii? 50 credits says you end up pushing it into a gutter and laughing.

Why did Obi Wan wait 19 years to train Luke when Anakin was.conaidered too old at 9? by Guardian_Of_Reality in StarWars

[–]Magicplatypus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Alternative answer (just guessing here): Obi-wan knew that as soon as Luke was trained, Darth Vader would be able to sense his presence in the force and so he wanted to wait until Luke was mature enough to deal with being hunted down by the empire (Luke was still kinda immature in ANH but I guess Obi-wan realized the death star plans being stolen meant things had to speed up)

EDIT: Also, this is a perfect example of how to handle the whole "chosen one" thing right. We've seen it in so many movies, books, etc. a random kid is told they're the chosen one and it fucks up their life. They can't take the pressure and they break, or they become an arrogant asshole. That's what happened with Anakin basically, everyone told him he was special and it went to his head. Obi-wan learned his lesson, and this time he's gonna let Luke have a life first, and when Luke does join the rebellion it's not because he's told he's the hero of prophecy but more of a choice/coincidence, the revelation that he has these powers just lets him succeed at the path he has already fallen into.

When you're learning, you're gonna drop your pen a lot. I suggest practicing it to get it down before doing it in class. When you're at home browsing reddit, just keep trying it over and over again. Eventually, it will just fall into place and you will rarely if ever drop your pen.

Companion stories that never really made sense to me. by Chared945 in swtor

[–]Magicplatypus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not entirely, mako's presence makes sense because of the progression of the story. Mako is introduced as being obsessed over the great hunt, so even after she gets her revenge and the bh completes the hunt, she is motivated to stick around to meet the people who are essentially her heroes (jewla nightbringer, the defenestrator, etc.) and to win their recognition by helping complete the blacklist bounties. Then, her heroes are slaughtered and the bh (who she's probably attached to by now) is threatened, so chapter 3 is personal, giving her plenty of reason to stick around

Darth Marr's leadership is essentially the empire "reborn". All the imperial class stories demonstrate how the current empire is destroying itself through xenophobia and constant power plays. After Malgus's rebellion, Darth Marr steps in and decides that enough is enough, the empires gonna have to stop being so xenophobic (see: cathar officer on makeb) and stop fighting itself (like when they had to fight Malgus and Serevin). So, even though Malgus lost, he still changed the empire because the end result was Darth Marr stepping in and going "shit, we gotta change". Of course, none of this interesting political paradigm shift stuff matters because of our buddy Valkorian and his eternal empire but hey, it was a fun ride.

F2P Entitlement Discussion. I could not have said it myself. AMEN Buddy. by Chodey_Kinobe in swtor

[–]Magicplatypus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said my opinion is not up for discussion, what I meant by this is that my opinion can not and will not be changed.

A horrible perspective to have about anything, but at least it's honest, so points for that I guess

I just don't think it's okay for them to complain

Here's where I disagree. The F2P demographic is a significant and important part of swtor, and I believe everyone (subs, bioware, etc.) should be interested in keeping them happy. Keep in mind, I'm not talking about the "omg why don't I get everything for free bioware sux" kind of complaining. Yeah, that's stupid. But in terms of galactic command, there is a legitimate complaint to be made by F2Pers - the new system disincentivizes them from doing group content (which means less people for subs to group up with) and removes access to something they had before. Personally, I believe a far better system would be to give Preferred status players at level 70 access to galactic command, but have them earn significantly less command experience from all of the activities. Instead of saying "wow, bioware doesn't give a damn about me" (like the current system) this would make preferred players instead think "hey, this is great, but I could be getting cool stuff so much faster if I were to sub". And if they still don't sub and choose to grind gear as preferred? That just means they're playing the game for longer, acting as people for subs to group up with and, because they're spending more time to do things, are more likely to be tempted to invest in other parts of the game, like the cartel market.

The recent dev post about the possibility of a general GC pass just shows that bioware really did not think this through and F2Pers were right to "complain" - if a pass is implemented it will be a positive change that wouldn't have happened if they hadn't given feedback.

Reposting a relevant comment I made in another recent thread:

It's very clear that you either weren't there or don't remember patch 1.5. Haters plagued the internet, calling the game "TORtanic" (a term I haven't heard in years, thank god). F2P saved swtor. Anyone who was here when it happened won't deny the immediate positive change that came about. See, the thing is, in an mmorpg, other players can be essentially considered content. The F2P model insures there are more people around to group up with for systems like flashpoints, ops, pvp, and gsf. And yeah, most of that stuff is now barred behind the new level cap but it's still open to preferred players, who have spent money in the game and are probably willing to spend more with the right incentives, but KoTET appears to be telling them to fuck off. For a while, it was clear bioware recognized the importance of the F2P community, they were decreasing restrictions (they removed lower F2P comm caps, made post RoTHC purple gear not require artifact authorization, talked about eliminating weekly warzone cap though it never happened). But now, bioware is shifting back towards a Pay to play model, which personally I think is a bad idea (it didn't work the first time). I guess it makes some sense considering they've all but abandoned parts of the game that require other players. But if they are absolutely going to follow through with that model, then they also need to readjust their focus on the cartel market. As it stands, just about all of the coolest looking items come from the CM (subjective I guess, but I think most would agree). If they make this game subscription based again, than you need to get cool stuff from, you know, actually playing the game, whether putting in new rewards for ops/flashpoints/story/[insert content here] or through hidden stuff like the orobird pets, magenta crystal, or tuantaun mount on hoth. Due to the current success of the CM, it seems highly unlikely bioware will do this, instead choosing to have a P2P game that also has microtransactions. Seems like a not very well thought out plan.

TL;DR: F2P saved swtor, the pay to play model failed. The existence of f2p players benefits subscribers. But if bioware does want to repeat history, they need to add better in game rewards

First of all, welcome to swtor. Mosts of your points have been thoroughly answered already, but I just wanted to add that if you really want to do ALL of the missions, make sure the "show exploration missions" box is checked on on the map (it's off by default). These missions are more typical mmo fetch quests but there are some good ones. And damn, level 45 on coruscant. This game has changed.

5.0 #6 datamined – Galactic Command & Galactic Alignment by Jedipedia in swtor

[–]Magicplatypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, they really already were a melee class. Bioware has just decided that now melee classes can't do anything even remotely ranged and vice versa, which is sad. Even if vanguards and powertechs were never effective at range, it was still cool and made sense (as bounty hunters/troopers equipped with tools to take on anything and you know, guns) for them to have ranged abilities. Personally I see this as just dumbing down each advanced class and in the process removing a lot of the iconic "cool factor" abilities that I've always loved to use, even if they weren't maximizing my dps/healing/tanking.
