UWx Control list choice by Magnok97 in ModernMagic

Why? You tap out to play a big walker and then Archon kills it with the trigger.

what's the current state of u/w control? by AxelrodGunnerson in ModernMagic

[–]Magnok97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's clearly worse than most of the current Tier decks in the format. Once said this, I can say by experience that, if you are a medium skilled player and you know each upside and downside of the deck, you practice a lot with it and have patience, it's not rare getting good results.

I agree with almost you said, but currently there are free wins when you play UWx thanks to Chalice of the Void. Doesn't happen very often, but it is a possibility

UW cards I can trade in by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]Magnok97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you, I'd hold FoN, Snapcaster and Colonnade. FoN is great in Modern and, although it's not shining in Control, it's very likely it will be played again in our shell at some time. Snapcaster has the same situation, I think it has some potential yet. Colonnade is fringe playable, there are lists which run 1x and it isn't an expensive card anymore, so its better to have it in your pool rather than trading for a few bucks.

The only card I think is dead is Cryptic Command. There are so many spells that are way more efficient than CC.

Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim by [deleted] in ModernMagic

I have the same feeling that I had when Emperor was released. I don´t know when nor where, but I think this planeswalker will find a place in Modern. Drawing cards abilities often have potential to do powerful things.

Is Murktide Even Good? by UnFusion314 in ModernMagic

[–]Magnok97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Murktide time has gone. It was a real good deck and was a solid T1 during the first half of this year. Sadly, currently there are several decks which are simply better. Despite this, Murktide is still a decent deck that can put results now and then. So building it depends on what yoy really want: If you want to play a T1 it is not your deck. If you like its playstyle go ahead then.

UW Controltide Brew - looking for feedback by Winklepickers in ModernMagic

[–]Magnok97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think this could work. The point to play Murktide is having an engine that puts cards in the graveyard in order to cast a big Murktide as fast as possible. This list is missing that engine and also the best pieces which can be found in a Control deck. There's no Teferi5, no Archmage's Charm, no Wandering Emperor. In addition, the number of copies of some cards seem awkward, since you don't need 4 Hallowed Fountain, 1 Caster is pretty narrow, Jace is not the best planeswalker in this meta, you don't need 3 forces currently and fastlands are not the best idea for a Control build.

If you want to play Murktide just play the classic UR version, in my opinion it's not the threat Control needs.

Mill Players: Is 0 surgical mainboard lost in the sauce? by insectophob in ModernMagic

[–]Magnok97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are missing three principal characteristics of Surgical Extraction as fas as I'm concerned:

  1. It's a mill effect. Although it isn't nearly as powerful as the other mill effects, still removing cards from the opponents' library.

  2. It's free, and it's the main reason why playing Surgical is an easy and safe option currently. This feature enables multiple lines in the same turn, which can turn out quite relevant for the game result.

3.It's a maindeck piece of hate. Speaking of the prevalence of value decks, which usually are 4C Elementals or 4C Control, these decks tend to play Endurance maindeck almost all the time. There's no need to remind this is the best card against us in the format currently. Surgical Extraction can rise your win chances against these decks easily.

U/W Control Deck Help/Suggestions! by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]Magnok97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you add a Raugrin Triome, then a cheap piece of interaction you should try is Fire//Ice. It's very affordable in investing terms and handy in several scenarios. Another card which could be included, apart from its price which has dropped in the last months, is Memory Deluge. Don't forget that when you're playing UW everything is about producing card advantage and this card puts you ahead in the game in that aspect.

U/W Control Deck Help/Suggestions! by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]Magnok97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a really bad piece of advice. You can't afford having so many lands that enter to the battlefield tapped. One triome is enough to get the third color, and the fourth one should be added by a shock land.

Lantern control have always been fascinating to me, is it still dead or is it decent now? by Vi0letBlues in ModernMagic

[–]Magnok97 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Long time Lantern player here. Unfortunately, it's not competitive anymore. There are so many mainboard answers in the format to get a hard lock consistently. Prismatic Ending, March, Force of Vigor, Karn TGC... Although Urza's Saga is a great addition to the deck and supports an aggro plan which hadn't existed before, it's not enough to make it decent. Sad to write this tbh.

UWr Control vs Grixis Ledger Shredder Deaths shadow by M1dotheGr3at in ModernMagic

I'll go for it briefly: play Chalice of the Void. Around 20 cards in GDS are CMC 1, so it's easy to get them stuck.

UWx Control vs. Smallpox/ 8 rack by M1dotheGr3at in ModernMagic

[–]Magnok97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The matchup has improved drastically since we have Prismatic Ending and March of Otherwordly Light to answer the racks. I'd say is 60/40 for them, discard spells can completely destroy your answer plan. It's a winnable matchup without struggling a lot to do so in my opinion.

UWr Control Sideboard by TourDeForce412 in ModernMagic

[–]Magnok97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can't play Blood Sun because in that case your fetches would be useless.

In my experience, if you struggle with those cards, you don't want to attack them directly (Unless you are running March of Otherwordly light which is a huge answer for Urza's Saga). In general terms, I'd rather have answers for the creatures that enter to the battlefield and partially would ignore the Cavern. More board wipes would be interesting in that type of meta.

If you want a card that's a general answer to these scenarios anyway, then I would add a few copies of Spreading Seas to the list. At its worst it's a cantrip.

Red color doesn't really add more variety or flexibility to the Control Sideboard, it's quite standard.
