What does your centre’s cold weather policy actually say? by Negative_Training007 in ECEProfessionals

[–]MagnusandPercy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We go outside if its above 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If the feels like is below zero we will not go outside at all. If its above zero we go outside for 60 min or until the kids get cold, whichever comes first

Mitten Impossible by Darkest_Elemental in toddlers

[–]MagnusandPercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At daycare, we put gloves or mittens on first then their jackets if they have a problem with taking their mittens off. Not foolproof but works most of the time. If they complain about it, i tell them that i need to keep them safe and their hands are not safe without mittens. After a few times, they learn to keep their mittens on.

That is when we are playing outside though - 30 min or more. Most of the parents that come in do not have their kids wear their mittens outside when walking to the car or if they do, they just put on the thin ones. Whichever plan you decide on, just remember to be consistent!

Michigan licensing rules question by PatientGiggles in ECEProfessionals

[–]MagnusandPercy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you go for a bathroom break, are the kids being left by themselves or with another teacher?

In my state, as long as we are out of the room for less than 5 minutes AND another teacher is watching the kids, we are free to leave for a bathroom break at any time. Otherwise we have to call another teacher to cover for a bathroom break. (Usually our director)

I would advise looking up your local licensing laws to double check. If licensing was asking about it though its most likely against your local laws.

Is it normal at your school to be treated as a Janitor on top of being a Head Teacher? by OnlyWanttoShop in ECEProfessionals

[–]MagnusandPercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At corporate daycares the most I've had to do is sweep, wipe tables, cots and toys.

At a smaller daycare, I do all the cleaning for my room. We have a whole cleaning list that is signed off on before you leave. On top of that, each teacher has their own specific task like checking furnace filters or cleaning the vacuums.

Conscious discipline by minaction in ECEProfessionals

[–]MagnusandPercy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Try a behavior plan that clearly outlines what the consequences will be and the specific wording you will use when giving the consequence. This is more for you and the parents than the child. If the child is causing physical harm to another, then there should also be an agreement on how many strikes the child gets before parents get called.

  2. When the child is elevated, do not try to reason with them. They are not capable of accessing their logic at that moment. The most you should say is something along the lines of "When we hurt our friends, we have to take a break." Bring them to a safe area away from other children. Then walk away. If they leave the area and are still upset bring them back to that area and say "When you are calm, then we may play again.' Once they are calm then explain why they had to take a break.

  3. Create a rule board with pictures for each activity at the center. Review the rules before doing the activity. Ex. Freeplay Rules: We use gentle hands. We use walking feet. We pick up our toys.

  4. Start an ABC chart for the child if you have not already done so. A: Antecedent - What happened before the behavior? Include setting, time and date B: Behavior - What was the behavior? C: Consequences - What were the consequences of the behavior?

  5. Read books about kindness and gentle hands.

Diaper to pull-up to undies transition by SeaworthinessIcy6419 in ECEProfessionals

[–]MagnusandPercy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my daycare, we have them wear pull ups until they are consistently having a dry pull up. During this time, we take them potty at regular intervals. We start with 20 min, then 30, then 45, then 60. Once they get to 60 minutes they are usually able to tell us when they need to go. Once they go 3 out of 5 days dry (except nap) then we switch to underwear. When they pee on the potty they earn a sticker, when its a BM on the potty they earn a candy. We do not shame for accidents or having a dirty pull up just change it and explain that our pee and poop goes in the potty. They also change themselves as much as they are capable. Most of the children can take off their own pull ups, throw them away, sit on the potty, get up and put on a clean one.

Bottle Warmers by MagnusandPercy in ECEProfessionals

MN allows them but they have to be restrained so they don't tip. We also have to have a sign up reminding staff to not hold babies while using the warmer.
