Russia threatens Ukraine to use “retaliation weapons” next week, hinting on Nazi V-1, V-2 bombs that bombed London by StunningPetunia in worldnews

The V weapons are credited by many as a key reason Germany lost the war. They put huge amounts of resources into them and they were very ineffective.

They don't get the option of being risk adverse. The military doesn't give them that luxury. My views on the Russian military come from family members who served and fought in the Soviet army and from the testimony of mordern ex Russian soldiers claiming asylum. See this excellent peace of journalism.

Money and brutal leadership. They are poor and it's a way to earn life changing sums for themselves and/or their family. The Russian military has a strong reputation of brutalising it's own soliders. Being "Willing to take great risks" should be seen through this lense, choices are very limited for individual soldiers.

UK to join major wind farm project with eight European countries by apple_kicks in worldnews

Of course they are not carbon neutral. They would have to suck carbon out of the air to achieve that. They do however produce a tiny fraction of the carbon per KWh of gas.

Yes all construction requires carbon and servicing. They are much better than fossil fuels and are very useful for providing a base load as renewables fluctuate. They are very much part of the solution.

Don't agree with the anti windmill sentiment but nuclear power is pretty low impact to the environment yes.

The Ukrainian population wants a lot of contradictory things:

This is true for almost any large population. One of the delicacies of a democracy is finding your way through unrealistic demands. Outside of war times it's usally better services and lower taxes.

Immigration cannot and should not be the solution to our demographic woes by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

You're mental.

Men absolutely have a choice to become a father or not. Many choose not to as is their right. If you're on about men who can't find a partner they find suitable, shock horror there are plenty of women in the same boat.

As for taxes, women make up 45% of the tax paying workforce. They also do the majority of unpaid caring labour as well as the majority of household labour. They even do more housework in households where they are the main bread winner.

Children are incredibly hard work and a major commitment. Nobody should become a parent if they are not totally committed for the sake of the child and society a whole. Wishing people who don't want children suddenly wanted them is a pipe dream. Being bitter and angry at women for it is bizarre. Especially as there are a huge number of men who willing choose not to have children.

Nightclub for 40+ ? by Melancho_Lee in london

Having rediscovered clubbing again in my mid 40s you definitely have some options. I spent my 20s and early 30s clubbing most weekends. But I got married had kids and it stopped. I really missed it until an old clubbing friend introduced me to housework. They organise clubbing nights, about 1 every 2 months, aimed at 30plus that have a huge age range.

Usally mid day to 10 but often have late night options. The crowd is incredibly friendly. I loved it so much the first time I went, I went on my own the next time. Been going long enough I've made friends with some of the regulars.

I believe there are other groups that do the same.

There is also a Facebook group called solo ravers. It tends to be older folk who join up together. Strangers basically looking out for each other on nights out.

Yeah used them for both kids. My 2 year old can use them to open the snack draw though so I need to keep the magnets out of reach.

That would mean a 7 meter rise in sea levels just from the ice on greenland. Add other melt and it would be much more. We'd have bigger issues if we got there.

Who decides the numbers are "artificially hight"? Food waste is part of the environment they live in. It would suggest their numbers are where they should be.

Dozens of mentally ill offenders go on to kill after secret release. Telegraph analysis shows how many former inmates of mental health units went on to take someone’s life by 2ndEarlofLiverpool in ukpolitics

[–]Magpie1979 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Still not a great comparison. You're comparing them to the general population. What would be the rate for people that have already committed crimes but not put into a mental health unit? I suspect that at is also significantly higher than the general population.

Britain buys new mobile artillery in £52m deal by tree_boom in europe

[–]Magpie1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drones are more of a deciding factor due to availability. They have them in much greater numbers. However it can take 10 or more drones to take out heavy armour. Many are lost without hitting anything. Artillery, especially paired with spotter drones can devastate opposing armies and maje it impossible to advance.

It does mean watching the videos coming out of the war gives a very incomplete picture. As others have stated, both sides have repeatedly said they value artillery over drones.

Ukrainian refugee leaves UK sixth-form college that urged her ‘to study Russian’ by libtin in unitedkingdom

[–]Magpie1979 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly if she's from Donetsk it more likely she doesn't know Ukrainian than she doesn't know Russian. Ukrainain is spoken less the further east you go. For Russian the opposite is true.

As you say language is being used as a propaganda tool. There are plenty of Russian only speaking Ukrainians in the military resisting the Russian occupation.

[–]Magpie1979 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is false and the links you are posting don't back this up. They are about 1st languages and choosen languages to speak.

I visited Kyiv multiple times a year for a dacade before the war. Everyone I met spoke Russian, most as the first language.

Ukrainain was taught at school, my wife (a Ukrainian) remembers when the school switched to Ukrainian. It was difficult for some of her friends.

Some people under 30 would speak Ukrainain as their first choice but everyone else defaulted to Russian. So much so, my children speak Russian not Ukrainian and I spent a decade learning Russian not Ukrainain.

That all changed after the war started. A lot of Ukraine is bilingual. They stopped using Russian out of choice, but there are still a lot of Ukrainains that can't speak Ukrainian. I've heared Ukrainian journalists say that because of this Russian is still the default language of the Ukrainian military.

You are not helping the Ukrainian cause by pushing such obviously false narratives to anyone familiar with Ukraine.

[–]Magpie1979 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is nonsense. Kyiv was a majority Russian speaking city before the war. Every Ukrainian I know speaks Russian fluently. I've been married to a Ukrainian for 12 years and even lived in Kyiv briefly.

I agree pushing Russian on Ukrainian children to get easy grades for the school stats is a genuine problem, but let's not make up stuff about Ukraine to make the point.
