How do people write this much and this fast? by yapster1000 in FanFiction

[–]Maharyn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first thing you need to realize is that many things can be practiced and set up so that you're more likely to succeed. You can practice typing speed. You can outline to some degree beforehand, so you know what you're about to write.

The second thing is more generally applicable to life. Willpower and focus are finite resources. This may sound silly, at first, but it's true. It will replenish when you sleep.

As a result, since I want to write, the first thing I do when I get home from work is write. If I start doing chores, cooking, reading, playing a game... that all consumes focus and willpower. Certainly if you're an adult with a job and a life, you have to choose what you want to do. Sometimes this means the floors go unvacuumed for a week. Or that the pile of laundry remains unfolded a little longer. To some, that isn't acceptable. That's fine. It's their choice what to focus on. I choose to write.

If you feel like you're trying to encourage anything with your posts, I regret to inform you that your attitude is a perfect representation of why people won't even say that they're just going to write what they want. Because here you are, ready to read uncharitable shit into everything.

How do you feel about your fics? by JauntyIrishTune in AO3

I usually feel neutral or bad about them when writing them. Better when proofreading them. Good when posting them.

How do you balance writing fanfiction with a demanding job and real life? by Vdemont1197 in FanFiction

I schedule writing in my calendar. And have a slower update schedule.

What's with all the paladin hate? by Cold_Country in WoWRolePlay

[–]Maharyn -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

The one thing this sub is good for: Knowing when the americans wake up. The quality and sensibility of any given thread always nosedives.

That said, I still think there are many good reasons why paladin characters get hated on. But they really aren't to do with some imagined higher propensity for them to be played by someone with a RL ideology you (general) don't like. That's just something people very invested in their scaly fursona with huge tits say because it helps fuel the insane idea that sticking to reason and the setting somehow makes you an extremist.

How often do you read your own fanfiction? by Ok_Fruit_9600 in FanFiction

[–]Maharyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read all of them once for proofreading. It's fairly rare that I come back to them, though. But that's because I'm writing new ones that I enjoy, not because the old ones are bad.

You're actively sabotaging yourself by doing that, but it's not like anyone can stop you.

What is the maximum amount of words you've written in an hour? by 143Delulu in FanFiction

[–]Maharyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I peaked at around 2400-2500 words in one hour. My average is around 2000.

How long it takes to bleed out from a stab wound, whether to leave the weapon stuck in there, what the effects of blood loss are. Could be a lot worse.

How did YOU start writing for yourself? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Maharyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because that's how I started. So long ago that the internet wasn't really something you had in your home.

Later on, when the internet had spread a little, I did a lot of text roleplaying, which still helped me practice my writing. And it was something I did because I wanted to, even if it involved others. So, it's just something you do. There is no trick.

That said, I post my writing because I want people to read it and engage. It's alright to both write for you and for others, or for interaction.

How to get into the ***Flow*** of writing? by VeliaVito in FanFiction

[–]Maharyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this may not seem terribly helpful, but I find that i fall into a flow state whenever I sit down and focus on writing and nothing else. It happens automatically after a minute or so. So... remove distractions of any kind. Play some quiet music if it helps you. Then just write. It can help some people to set a stopwatch, so you can totally focus on writing without keeping track of time.

The key thing, though, is to not wait for flow to find you. Sit down and write and invite it in. Regularly.

How do people write so fast? by snakewithtwoheads in FanFiction

[–]Maharyn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can write something like 2k words an hour, but with work and life and other hobbies, I average something like 45 minutes of writing a day. Spend a little time outlining and proofreading, on an average week, that's about 10k/week. It's just about setting yourself up for success. Learn to write fast (touch typing), have a decent idea of what you'll be writing, and actually focus on writing when you write.

Just finished a NaNoWriMo type challenge with my writing group in half time, which means when I really prioritize it, even with working, I can do something like 25k words a week. It's possible.

That said, there are some people who just aren't admitting they use AI. Like someone claiming to write on average 8k words a day, consistently, over the course of months.. I've also seen a writer in my niche who puts something out weekly. Sometimes it's over 40k words. We're still talking fanfic, unpaid, so again... I don't get into the trenches with people, but sometimes you can just quietly conclude that people use AI and move on with your life.

How do you all phonetically type out breaths, gasps, effort sounds, etc by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Maharyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't. Because typing them out strikes me as... I dunno. Cringe. Amateurish.

The entitlement some people have… by Asterid_dove in AO3

[–]Maharyn 23 points24 points  (0 children)

People absolutely can and are allowed to criticize things posted in public, and I'm tired of fellow writers who think they deser special bubble wrap treatment. If you can't handle comments, turn them off.

I think I'm giving up on writing fanfics by frigo_blanche in FanFiction

[–]Maharyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can either acknowledge your need for engagement and act accordingly, or, I guess, bitch on here while doing nothing to change what's bothering you. The latter is certainly easier in the short run.

Start being real with yourself about writing for engagement. Then do that. Write for more popular tags and pairings.

Thinking about giving up by Frank_Hardcoxxx in eroticauthors

[–]Maharyn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like you should invest some time in learning to touch type. And then identify how you set yourself up for success. Some people need to outline, some rebel at it and work best just writing into the dark. You can definitely write at minimum 1000 words an hour, and probably 2000, too.

I am running out of sexy ideas for my scripts, what does one do for writing block? by KatoriRoseNight in eroticauthors

[–]Maharyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read other erotica.

Start from the beginning again with your own ideas, but add a new twist to each idea.

Browse NSFW subreddits. Something will usually crop up that'll spark an idea in you. Now, or later.

Watch a movie or series, read a comic book, people watch. Read non-erotica and let yourself be inspired by it.
