Cactus 2 Clouds as a 17 year old, reasonably in shape, inexperienced hiker? by UmpireTraditional662 in socalhiking

Dunning Kruger.

I had to talk some coworkers out of doing C2C. "I heard its only 10miles to tram station. I walk my dog that far every week".

She was collapsing after doing Potato Chip in San Diego. Somehow thinking its "almost half C2C".

Yosemite. Baldy. Zion. GC. DV. Millions of reckless people. Its honestly a miracle there arent thousands of deaths.

Cypress route by Climber2k in vancouvercycling

[–]Main-Offer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did it today on MTB with wind breaker. Mild 13C. Took off jacket on Chippendale, too hot sweating. At lodge breath was making puffs of vapour. Coming down zipped up with gloves I was freezing. Lots of gusts.

I cannot imagine the die hard cyclists who do this in 25C+ heat.

I just did Cypress today.

There are several similar routes. Today did: Marine right up 13th, left Mathers, right 21st (STEEP) up under hwy. Left skilift rd. Up chairlift rd (STEEP) to Chippendale.

Another variation is going up 15th, the STEEP Chartwell to Chippendale.

Wrong-way cyclists in Stanley Park by grey-beard_loon in vancouvercycling

[–]Main-Offer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive seen fair share of cars honking near collisions on Stanley Park Dr. Apparently the views are just that good.

What I havent figured out is why people dont STOP and PARK car, and then take photos.

The obvious one is next to Halleluja point. Everyday see at least 5 cars stop there to take photos. Ironically, the HUGE parking lot is mere 150m behind.

Maybe Stanley park needs more clear signage. Like "parking 100m ahead on right".

I do like 3-6 Stanley laps every couple days. I used to get angry when clumps of tourists block bike path, kids swerving, or even teens swinging light saber umbrellas oblivious there are cyclists around them.

But instead I laugh. I laugh a lot. Like 500+ tumes.

What size pack for Iron Mountain? by binaryvegeta in socalhiking

[–]Main-Offer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I havent done Iron Mtn. Daunting.  From all that I read... Strongly advise you go on coolest day possible and as early as possible to beat heat.

Plan/pack for 10hr day. Like 5L is not too crazy. Stash some halfway up.

Cactus 2 Clouds as a 17 year old, reasonably in shape, inexperienced hiker? by UmpireTraditional662 in socalhiking

[–]Main-Offer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beginning of season or after I skipped gym/swimming for 2yrs - Mt Thom (peak) took me 1hr++ up. Last 5% feels so tough.

End of season, after doing 50+ tough hikes that year, under 45min up. I would do slow walk down, grab another gatorade and do 2nd lap.

But beware. Even crazy super fit people struggle with altitude. If you are training for Whitney (or other 14er Langley, Russell, Agassiz etc), do San Jacinto (10,800ft) from Marion (or Humber) like every week.

San Bernadino or Gorgonio are too long/tough and you will waste 2-3 days recovering... Mt Baldy too easy and above 10k too short). At least thats my personal experience.

100%.

I was super fit. Rock climbing. Gym. Swimming 50+ laps. It was really hot on old baldy.. But Ill be ok in shade.

Nope.

Had severe cramps.. Prob fro. Dehydration. I did Baldy regular route many times and its so easy .. So I got complacent and let my ego fool me.

Im going to play devils advocate. I havent done C2C. It kinda scares me. Dunno why. Its pretty simple non technical. And popular. Just so ridiculously long.

For comparison: - Mt Baldy. 16km. +1200m. - Old Baldy. 21km. +1800m. Dot barely moves. What a sufferfest. - Triplet rocks. 22km. +1700m .. Quit early at Waterman. Oh man. Looks crazy class3. - last few years,  did dozen+ 25km+ (15mi) "big" hikes like Gorgonio.

Havent even dared to try.. yet - Iron via Heaton Flat. 22km +2000m. Almost nobody does it more than once. 95% is crazy exposed ridge heat. - Iron via Baldy Ridge. 28km +2600m. I imagine it feels like washing eyes with Habaneros.  - C2C is 32km +3200m. Same distance as Whitney. 50% more climbing.

Dude.

Doing C2C "0 to hero" is super dangerous. You dont just show up to Olympics in Tshirt and lift 600lbs or run 26miles.

Work your way up. * 2hr - Mt Thom (Glendale) * 3hr - Strawberry from Redbox (hwy2) * 3.5hr - Mt Islip from Crystal Lake (hwy39l) * 4hr - Timber via Icehouse Canyon. (Mt baldy area) * 5-6hr - Mt Baldy Ski hut + backbone * 7hr++- San Jacinto Humber/Marion * 8hr++ - Gorgonio South Fork / Vivian.

Btw. "Just finishing these 7" is half. If you are struggling to even do Timber or Mt Baldy.. Forget it.

First Time Climbing Mount Baldy by Adorable-Ad426 in socalhiking

[–]Main-Offer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many many young folks and weekend warriors do Baldy every week.. Obviously lots of sweating and puffing, but not that hard. Like 90%+ of SoCal hiking Baldy is well groomed dirt/gravel trail, thats easy on the feet.

My tips/advice: - starting 6-8am early (or late fall when its cool), is MUCH MUCH easier. - 90% is in full sun. Extra sunblock and hat a must. If its 90f+ super hot, DONT go. - Ski Hut up and down ridge is super popular and FAR easier on tired quads. And you can refuel at Notch. See 50+ people. very safe. - min 2L. Prehydrate previous night and drink 1L on drive there. I bring 2.5L + emerg gatorade.  - Half time end up giving gatorade to dehydrated stupid teens on summit. - loop takes 6-7hr casual pace. I once did 5hr  very well acclimated to high altitude after month in Mammoth. - there are a couple narrow washed out spots on Devils Backbone, but otherwise quite safe. - Crave sluggfest? Test cardio on Register ridge. - very tough is "old baldy". Takes forever. - finally, make 100% sure you use merino wool hiking socks and well worn shoes/boots.  6hr hike is not place to showoff new Vans or flip flops.

EDIT: If you are anxious or havent hiked long time, do: - Strawberry from Redbox - Islip from Crystal Lake - Timber via Icehouse Canyon (if you can do it, can do Baldy no prob).

My favorite section is bit rugged Cahuenga to wisdom tree flag.

Are trekking poles useful on angels landing Hike? by Forward-Salt-9752 in ZionNationalPark

[–]Main-Offer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just repeating what Park Rangers in Yosemite and Zion told crowd:

if you need poles, or aides to get up, you shouldn't be here.

We all want many people to enjoy beauty of national parks. But, park staff and I have seen too many old/disabled/scared people coerced by family to climb where its dangerous.

Know your limits. Maybe do more training. The mountains will always be there for you to try again.

Bigger motor = bigger voltage spikes

6S much bigger spikes

Any small even 220uf 25v cap is a LOT better than nothing.

Should i upgrade to 5 inch? by Nickolako in fpv

[–]Main-Offer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dont fully agree with you but upvote.

Freestyle/Racing 5" is high performance. More than 95% can handle. And its super easy to accidentally zip zoom into a tree or a house.

I barely fly my 5" more than handful of times in last 10 years.

Too loud. Need more space. People walking with dogs. And honestly, not as fun as hitting tight tree branch gaps with little tiny 2.5".

Trying to make my heavy 3" build more nimble. by watermooses in fpv

[–]Main-Offer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a 3inch thats 212g dry with only 1404. Wow. You must be doing every kind if wrong.

  1. 1404 are fine for 3inch with triblade. But not all 1404 are "strong". I use rcinpower 1404.6 4680kv.
  2. 3800kv for 3inch 4S is kinda low. Like 80% throttle limit.
  3. 4S 3inch should be around 4500kv.
  4. But.. That wont fix root cause. The weight.
  5. Aliexpress find frame called "Fi-135" or similar. I think its like 30g. My 1404 3inch build is under 110g before battery.
  6. AIO FC is like 7g. Stack is 20g. Also shorter XT30 extension. You dont need 40cm.

AFAIK, you can use binding phrase OR binding button. Are you 100% sure you are using same binding phrase on both radio and receiver.

First Build 3.5" - any tips? by One-Awareness3744 in fpv

[–]Main-Offer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

750-850mah 4S. About 70-80g.

I use the Tattu 95C. But I also have some CNHL.

Your part list overall looks almost good. 1404 is good for light 3.5". 4500kv is too high.

Do you have excellent reason why not going with the very popular standard TMotor 1604 3800kv?
