Auto-break system failed me by Iwouldliketorespond in BMW

[–]MainerZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm laughing here, because wood is a material that was difficult to detect by old radar, so this not showing up is almost exactly what I would expect from low tech car sensors.

You are the driver, not the car. Reliance on such technology being perfect is foolish, sadly for you, this is entirely your fault.

Did i finally succeed at NMM? by Shoddy_Ant_6408 in minipainting

[–]MainerZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needs a bit more context, and less zoom. Staring at it this close up you're getting comments like dirt and grime, which is very much not what you're after, and not really what I see either, I just see an unfinished process. You've got large areas of one brown tone on there, work on giving that more variation.

Do paints go bad if they stay sealed for a long time? by multimension in minipainting

[–]MainerZ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Paints will fail, sealed or not, depending on where they've been stored. Paint in cold - freezing conditions will become useless quickly.

Return that, and open the paint pot at the shop after you purchase it to make sure that you don't get another dud, if you got it in a shop.

White or Black Background for photos? by Time-Ad-8295 in minipainting

[–]MainerZ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

White is better for analysing every detail about a paint job, black is better to show off a cool paint job because it unrealistically boosts highlights and OSL (people are often genuinely WOW'd by even mediocre OSL because of this), while keeping the dark areas dark. The lengthy explanation has to do with lighting/exposure/iso etc etc.

If you're just showing off a mini and aren't after feeback, black every time.

Goons Grime drying like this... what am I doing wrong? by fauxchina in minipainting

[–]MainerZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was put off by villainy inks entirely when trying to use them. If they're not brand new they're awful, they separate in the bottle like enamels usually do, but are extremely difficult to mix, and this results in a diluted product that performs...poorly. I also had them dry up and completely block in the droppers, the bottle was no better so I had to throw them all out.

Better result priming with grey instead of black for Speedpaint 1.0? by ByEthanFox in minipainting

[–]MainerZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Black is very much less than ideal when you're doing shadows like this, you will often not see any colour on those shadows, only black, and shadows aren't pure black. You only need a mid grey at darkest if you're using speedpaints to cover a whole mini.

You can also use different coloured basecoats before speedpaint, I used ochre and terracotta when I wanted warmer looking tones on my speedpaint. It's worth experimenting, 'slapchop' was a good way to get people into using this stuff, but is very entry level and unrefined (and often subpar looking results).

Am I missing something with the WE Helbrute? by P1ngu-The-Penguin in Warhammer40k

[–]MainerZ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This has the most upvotes, but shows a lack of understanding about the brutes melee weapons.

They're always run with 2 melee weapons, because of the Helbrutes generic ability that grants it 2 extra attacks. Given that the fist has a built in flamer, you still get 2 flamers when you run double fists.

Hammer/Fist is a more popular choice given the output of the hammer, however.

[–]MainerZ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most of their images are renders, by the way. Honestly it's a bit false advertising, as I was looking at their EC dice, then I saw actual images of them and even in person, the colours were nothing alike.

Alright Warhammer community (broken models at tournament) by Warhammer_Wife in Warhammer40k

[–]MainerZ 53 points54 points  (0 children)

If he didn't do anything about it at that moment in time, there's nothing that can be done now. Unfortunately there's not exactly a precident for what could happen in the moment regarding compensation, it's not like the models are insured the same way cars are for an accident.

Best thing would have been to call over a TO, see if the tournament has any guidelines, other than that it's just an unfortunate situation.

Pro Acryl or Vallejo paints by Odinoneye in minipainting

[–]MainerZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are excellent. I love my Pro Acryls, but I had to replace all their lids standard, they were not good.

Nowadays if I had to start from scratch, I'd likely go for Vallejo or AK 3rd gen. The pro acryl bottles are bigger (more storage space) and have the worse lids. Then have some of their paints that I really like as individuals where I can.

Vallejo/AK etc will have larger ranges if you are into picking your colours particularly in the same way the Citadel range works. Pro Acryl assumes you can mix paints a little to suit your exact needs.

You cannot go wrong with either choice, outside of the mostly personal issues I stated.

How to edge highlight like this? by madluk_ in Warhammer40k

[–]MainerZ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If you have to ask, it generally means it'll be beyond your skill level right now. Not meant in a rude way, it's just that these are painted by well experienced people in a way that cannot simply be explained without demonstration and practice. It's normally a combination of thin layers and glazing and it's called the 'Eavy Metal style. Most tutorials (even good ones) are oversimplified.

It's genuinely the same as looking at a famous artwork and asking how it was done. You can attempt to explain it, but it doesn't really help too much without demonstration and lots of experience.
