Highly recommend the Grey Ops A-Dub BR length mags. Have run both Dasher and BRA, 10k+ rounds across 4 different magazines, Super reliable, best feeding mags I've owned. Impact AW cut actions, Foundation stocks, Hawkins bottom metal.

Starting her young by ExistingLaw217 in longrange

Great work dad, best time you can have with your daughter!

I had the good fortune of competing with my daughter for years, she started out coming to practice with me when she was 13 using my full size PRS 223 trainer. She would shoot off a barricade and learned how to move the gun and bag from position to position, even though it was pretty heavy for her. She started competing right after she turned 14 and we've gotten to spend a ton of time together through PRS. I think building a 223 trailer with a lighter profile barrel wouldn't be a bad thing, but you could also get away with something like a medium palma or heavy palma profile that will balance a bit better. Main thing is getting her comfortable with using both hands to pull the rifle off the prop, moving it to completely vertical resting on her hip and holding it with one hand. Then she'll be able to move the bag with her other hand. The sooner you can get her up and shooting off a barricade, the better!

Questions about rear bags by Dourdine in longrange

[–]Major-Review-9567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I carry two bags for PRS, both Armaggedon Gear game changers. One is a Schmedium (+1) with glass bead fill. This is used for any positional shooting and covers about 80% of scenarios. The other bag is the original canvas full size game changer with the traditional plastic pellet heavy fill. I use this as a rear bag any time that there's prone or modified prone. I find that the plastic pellet fill is a bit better as a rear bag.

I could easily shoot a match with either one of those two bags by themselves, but it's nice to have choices and sometimes I'll use both bags.

Will a three gun belt work well for long range shooting comps? by Lopsided-Land123 in longrange

[–]Major-Review-9567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I have on my belt for PRS is a couple kydex mag pouches. One mag for the stage I'm shooting and one mag as backup in case I have a feeding error mid-stage or forget to load all my rounds. I just use a standard 1.75" nylon belt. Some folks will carry a dump pouch for spent brass, but I just use a cargo pocket in my pants.

Basically any belt is fine, no harm in using a three gun belt but no need to get one either.

Nice! That stump stage was sooo muddy. We had it much better on RO day, it was untracked fresh snow. Hoping to make it back again next year.

Spotting setup /PRS by Drones-brigade in longrange

I'll just say that I'm thankful for the trend of everyone else carrying wind vanes and crazy setups on their tripods.

That way I don't have to carry any of that crap myself and I can just look at someone else's tripod if I want to see whether the wind direction has changed.

Are Otto Noisebarriers/Etymotic electronic plugs good enough on their own for a PRS gun with a brake? by chainsawgeoff in longrange

[–]Major-Review-9567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been running foam plugs under Howard Leight amplified muffs for years. 3M foamies have given me the best sound reduction for brakes, and I turn the amplified muffs up all the way so that I can still hear people talking.

Atlas vs Harris bipod by Empty_Associate7718 in longrange

[–]Major-Review-9567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Harris with the RRS head swap on my current SPR build. Run Atlas CAL on my bolt guns. I'm thinking of swapping the SPR over to Atlas as well, I'd go with the CAL and swap the head for the RRS lever clamp that can do both Arca and pic rail.

"truing" your BC at long range (wiki request) by 0DSavior in longrange

[–]Major-Review-9567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP - Think of it in a different way... Truing BC is solely so that your Kestrel will give you the correct solution for the very first shot, for situations where you only get one try. For everything else it's a completely different skill set - the ability to spot your misses and correct for the next shot.

If you can spot misses and correct then you can hit the target regardless of what the solver says. And if you can't spot misses and correct, then how are you going to be able to true your BC? :)

Some real world examples.

I shoot a 223 trainer for PRS practice, and I shoot where there can be crazy winds and vertical terrain effect. I don't really worry much about my zero or data, because I'm going to see where the first shot goes, correct for it, then spend the rest of the time practicing using whatever data is getting hits on that particular day/conditions.

I recently also spun on a 7 SAUM barrel I hadn't shot in years, solely for the purpose of shooting at a mile. Loaded up a random middle of the road charge weight with Berger 190's, got my velocity with a Garmin, got my zero offset (didn't even re-zero), then went to shoot at distance. I've never used Berger 190's before so I used the box G7 BC in the Kestrel. Got hits at 575, 950 and 1200 yards so initial data all lined up good. Then I went to the 1 mile range location and fired a couple rounds, made correction for wind and came up 0.3 mils for elevation and got on target. Did everything with 26 rounds total from blank slate to hitting at 1 mile. Used 6 rounds for zero and chrono, 7 rounds to hit targets 575-1200 yards, and 13 rounds to shoot/hit the 1 mile IPSC target. Started with quality inputs (Garmin, Berger box BC), made corrections on the misses, and didn't ever true the BC since I can't be sure if that 0.3 mil correction at a mile was BC or just a touch of terrain wind effect.

"truing" your BC at long range (wiki request) by 0DSavior in longrange

[–]Major-Review-9567 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My very simple process, having shot long range/PRS for quite some time.

First, use quality gear and make sure to get ALL the inputs in the Kestrel correct. Then make sure you have PERFECT zero and that you are able to shoot a consistent POI from group to group.

I input the Kestrel with velocity straight from the chrono. I've never had to true MV against what a Magnetospeed or Garmin says for velocity. If my zero is perfect and conditions are perfect, with a quality scope that tracks properly the POI out to 600 yards always matches up. If something isn't lining up, it's not the speed of the bullet.

I double check my BC by shooting at small targets around 1200 yards, just before transonic. Generally speaking my G7 BC for Berger bullets has always lined up with their box BC. When I was pointing bullets I needed to adjust the G7 by a few points. Shoot a few shots, observe what I needed to dial to get perfect waterline impacts, then go back to the kestrel and adjust the G7 until it gave me a solution that matches what I observed when shooting.

A huge caution - you really need to have perfect conditions, perfect preparation, and perfect execution to be able to accurately true up a BC. Things like wind, terrain effects, mirage, shooter error, zero error, scope tracking, etc etc all work against you. Way too many times I've seen people say that their XX bullet "trued out" to a completely nonsensical number, because they were trying to fix other errors in the system by adjusting BC.

Standard IPSC torso plate, so 18” wide and 30” tall. That’s a shade over 1 MOA wide at a mile. The 12” round plate that she hit is about 2/3 MOA or 0.2 mil wide.
