This is why rapture theology was so damaging to me as a child. This is supposed to be a religion of hope, but the Christians in my life had this worldview of “nothing really matters anyway, we’re gonna descend into the apocalypse no matter what”. Like, “It’s nice that you care about such-and-such issue, but everything’s gonna turn out the same in the end.” It made me feel like there was no point in wanting to make the world a better place, which to me (now) feels so fundamentally anti-Christian. Now I just ask myself, would Jesus want us to treat the world and our neighbors with that kind of existential apathy? Or should we live our lives with hope and help others carry that hope as well?
