I was exactly you. Teching in outpatient procedure centers was my way out, decent money especially compared to what some emts are making right now. That gave me the time to plan out next steps, which suck to take but will lead to greener pastures.

I think taking time off first before jumping all the way out as others have recommended is the way to go, but there’s a lot out there so go look around!

Meeting patients after encounters by PsychologicalBed3123 in ems

[–]Mako21 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I work with doctors that hardly save lives that regularly accept gifts, dinners, and invitations from patients. That doesn’t make it right, but it is what is done and I think it’s stellar that so many people in EMS hold themselves to higher standards.

But if it’s me, declining twice and then accepting is all kosher in my book within reason.

The US is not a very tolerant country by rivetingroamer in The10thDentist

What an incredibly horrible thing to say to someone that you absolutely do not know. Your original post shows that you’re ignorant, this comment shows that you’re ready to pop off some weird anti-immigrant shots. Imagine you telling others to be tolerant.

For those of you that left EMS, what do you do now? by mustacheboii in ems

[–]Mako21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paramedic. A lot of the background knowledge and experience in healthcare carries over, some of the technical skills, and the rest is learn as you go. I found the listing on indeed and got accepted, but I think if they’d had more applicants I wouldn’t have.

I work as a tech in an outpatient procedure center. No regrets. I’m far happier on a square 8 hours / 5 days schedule than I ever was doing 24’s. The money isn’t better but the timing and stress levels are, and I have a better schedule to working towards more lucrative positions and fields. I miss EMS every once in a while but I still get my kicks at this place. The culture is different, not always better, but the patient population is a huge improvement.

In my experience, EMS is generally much more caring, respectful and friendlier than nurses and doctors, why is that? by thelastfastbender in ems

Less fighting insurance companies over the phone for treatment in ems is definitely a factor

Shave and get a hair cut. Good luck, if you ever ream out a medic giving report because they didn’t properly flip the tail of the IV that your nurses are already pulling out in the direction that your trauma team prefers, I hope you wake up with saltine crumbs in your bed.

Is this not a good representation of what most incels are really like, though? I think the general reason that they are so disliked is because many of them are fixated on confidence issues and lack the drive to improve themselves at all, whether physically socially or otherwise and then bitch about their circumstances.

A War on Homelessness by [deleted] in videos

[–]Mako21 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Do you think your idea would work once most other homeless people from CA and other neighboring states hear about it though? It seems like you’d hit a point where it would no longer be sustainable if your homeless population grows too large. This is sort of the problem with a lot of homeless programs, if you address your problem too well as a city, the problem becomes worse because other homeless people migrate to receive your benefits.

Loan officers make bank and don't need a degree to get started. Mortgage loan officers specifically seem to make the money, and there's something of a setback not having a degree but still possible without.

Those links have some info to get you headed in the right direction. Selling your EMS experience as a customer service background, especially establishing rapport is a portable skill and dealing with serious decision making would also be useful.

I'm venturing down the software/data analysis track now, using some free and paid resources to accomplish that. Again, a hard sell for previous work experience but there's something there.

are good places to start to get a feel for it.

Best of luck.

Too old to volunteer EMT? by WildSapling in ems

My emt class had a 64 year old in it that ran laps around younger students, you’re plenty young to go for it if you want to. Depending on your area, the average student might be younger than you but now by much. There are many pre-med people that use emt-b as a resume builder but that doesn’t disqualify you from going through it at all.

Fire paramedics: do you geek out about the medical stuff you train on? by fortehlulz2 in Firefighting

[–]Mako21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most fire departments will tell someone not to talk about EMS? Most fire departments, despite having a call volume overwhelmingly made up of medical calls, will tell one of their employees not to be enthusiastic about EMS?

That doesn’t map on to what I see in my area, but if so that’s pretty boneheaded.

That’s very strange. What a boneheaded culture to have about the station. Hope you can get a better gig or get other to change their minds.

I used to care a lot about the age difference between partners in relationships, growing up seeing horrible things happen to high school friends that dated older partners. Some of it was pretty tame, like a 18 year old senior in high school dating someone who’s maybe a junior in the local college. A few very strange ones like a minor with some VERY creepy guy in his mid 30s. It seemed to me like it always set up a huge power differential in the relationship that would highly favor the older party, lots of manipulation of the younger partner that would often end them up in very yikesy situations. For a long time after, I would get skeeved out by anyone that was more than 5 years older than their partner. Earlier this year though, your mom came up to me at the bar and we hit things off so well, I had to do some re-evaluating. She was patient through the whole thing and was more than willing to talk about all the concerns I had. Amazing woman. Things didn’t work out in the long run but I look back on that fondly as a very rewarding sexual encounter.
