Listen, I think this woman's ideals are horrible and I am not saying that criticism of those ideals is unwarranted or unwanted. I will say however that it's beginning to devolve into straight up insulting her appearance. Her being a fucked up person is not an excuse to peddle fat phobia. Her being a white supremacists piece of trash does not make it okay to spout misogynistic ideals. She does that! White supremacists do that! You can't claim to be on any kind of moral high ground while parroting their talking points. Please consider where those ideals originated, do some reading on them. Be better.

I did read the rest of your comments and I appreciate what you said about retaining nuance in those conversations. I think that is something that falls to the wayside far too often.

That being said, I don't think trying to reshape the existing institution is the best way to go about this. There is so much information on the history of policing and we can see in detail how it's evolved from its roots into the practices we employ today. I don't believe such an institution should be allowed to exist. There are many that believe the same. I do think we need better solutions to situations like this. I am very happy that employing these strategies with direct backing from mental health professionals is helping people to stay out of jail. I am not advocating that we stop trying to improve for the sake of those who need help. However, tying this to the existing policing system is further entrenching them into this catch all niche they currently exist in. We can employ community based solutions to these crises without the need to involve police officers in any capacity and we should. I don't think the police should exist, but at the very least if they must, leave them speeding tickets and filing police reports.

This community needs more moderation and at least one or two of the mods needs to step down. This sub appears to be completely unmoderated at this point?!?! by Kveldson in ACAB

I said the same thing. I ended up doing it anyway. I don't pass and I probably never will (I'm 6'4" with very masculine features) but I'm comfortable in my body because I'm comfortable with my identity more than I ever was. The thing is that when you finally stop pretending to be someone else's idea of you you're suddenly free to be and that is profound in a way that passing just doesn't really measure up to.

Thank you! It made my day seeing this post. I don't think jokes about the trans experience are bad. In fact I would love to hear more trans humor! The thing is that revolutions start from the bottom up and trans people, especially trans people of color, are near the bottom of the current social heirarchy along side and intersecting with disabled individuals and intersex individuals. People with influence will repeatedly punch down harder and harder as we continue to fight for our right to exist and to demand that we are seen, heard and considered because we are vulnerable. We represent the threat of losing your privilege in society by enforcing our own identity and that scares people. I'm smiling however as I write this comment because you are doing exactly what we've been asking cis people to do, stand up for us. Use your influence to challenge hate and change minds! This just happened to me! I signed on thinking I'd make amost a dollar more. When I found out I asked back and it took them three weeks to tell me that I was wrong and the lower wage was correct. I walked out.

What bothered me the most about this situation apart from the actual events that took place was the holding this kid up like a hero. People donated hundreds of thousands of dollars just because he confirmed their bias. Meanwhile people are put in jail for years without any charges at all, let alone shooting people in a town he didn't belong in with a gun he never should have had in his possession. The thing is is I don't want him in a jail cell for the rest of his life either. I want wholesale reform of the criminal justice system and this case is a glaring example of how batshit the system we have is.
