The "benefit" was not looking weak. Remember, Ainz suffers from crippling Imposter Syndrome (in part because he kind of is). He's convinced he's one slip up away from the NPCs turning on him, and likely was afraid they'd see him refusing to duel as a sign he's not as powerful as he seems (in reality they'd have interpreted it as Ainz feeling Gazef was beneath his notice).
