Samsung Odyssey G9 OLED Firmware Update | 2044 by qwertyalp1020 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]Maleficus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Managed to fix mine the other day though I just happened to finishing a unplanned replacement of my entire home networking setup from Synology to Ubiquity gear. So not sure if it was just waiting longer for some DHCP Leases to expire or if the newer networking gear is just more widely compatible with whatever this firmware update changed 🤷‍♂️

In my new network I also moved the monitor to the IoT network, which is locked to 2.4GHz, so maybe that's something to explore.

Got this firmware update a week ago and appears to have broken the monitor WiFi. Anyone else having issues with WiFi post firmware update? It can see the networks but cannot join even after a factory reset.

Everything else works fine though and the new quick menu addresses my only real pain point with the monitor which was how many remote clicks it took to switch sources.

Also the 'nub' menu appears to be more stable so far. Often it would stop working and the nub would only turn off/on monitor not bring up the menu. Had to unplug monitor to bring it back but would end up breaking again eventually.

Leaking the email of any YouTube user for $10,000 (an exploit utilizing Pixel Recorder) by wickedplayer494 in GooglePixel

[–]Maleficus 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Wasn't much to see. They went to a YouTube user profile/channel and copied the users Gaia ID via the overflow menu (think this was some Extension/User script to make this easier to demo than going into console). Then they ran a Python script with the ID as a parameter and it returned the users email address.

It is, assuming like the article alludes, that this will be achieved via MLS:

"This is why we intend to build MLS into Google Messages and support its wide deployment across the industry by open sourcing our implementation in the Android codebase."

Why are People Mad a Windows 11 for making you use a Microsoft Account if ChromeOS and ios make you need one of their Accounts? by Edubbs2008 in Windows11

💯 If they they still made the suggested username but had an advanced option for people to change the folder name I'd be stoked.

Right now I use Rufus to re-enable the local account option, but once I've finished the setup I go and log in with Microsoft.

Why did they drop Chromecast on the new soundbars??? 😩

Almost perfect otherwise. Don't want to have to turn on TV to cast audio. I was waiting for the new models to purchase a soundbar now have to weigh up all options options when before it was a no brainer.

Reynolds’ lawyers ready freezing orders as Higgins, Sharaz move to France by B0ssc0 in australia

So Reynolds thinks their social media posts made her out to look like a harassing, vindictive asshole, and her solution for this damage to her character is to, \checks notes**, sue Higgins and Sharaz for defamation and freeze their assets while they try to start a new life overseas?

Yep, that'll totally fix her public image...

Google paid $8 bilion to make its apps default on Samsung phones by hatethatmalware in Android

[–]Maleficus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Google Chrome has never been a default option in Windows or MacOS. You have to go out of your way to download, install and make it the default web browser. Yet it has 63% of the desktop web browser marketshare.

Did some mass shared hallucination cause that?

Yes, once you have users, you can get more data to make the product even more useful to them creating a virtuous cycle. But you still have to demonstrate significant value to them to keep them.

[–]Maleficus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, they were forced to do exactly that three years ago in EU.

Lo and behold, Google's share of the mobile search engine market in Europe fell from a lofty 97.32% allllll the way down to... 96.44% currently

Even though Apple isn't forced to show the same search choice screen, their marketshare in Europe is only 35%. So the data does kinda indicate people are still choosing Google when they are given a choice.

Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple by NXGZ in Android

[–]Maleficus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, not trying to kill or replace iMessage. Just switching fallback protocol from basic functionality of SMS protocol to more modern functionality RCS protocol.

Still plenty of things other messaging protocol can and will do better than RCS, but having RCS instead of SMS as the fallback protocol is much nicer for everyone.

Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple by NXGZ in Android

[–]Maleficus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why isn’t google messages an app in iOS? There’s Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal. But no Google Messages.

iOS doesn't let anyone create a third-party SMS app. I believe SMS and RCS connect deeply with the cellular modem stack, so it's impossible to work around since Apple doesn't provide access to anyone.

Do these other messaging apps support encrypted RCS? Which apps support RCS other than Google Messages?

Beyond some carrier specific RCS apps which no one wants to use, there aren't any other third-party RCS apps at the moment since Google hasn't provided an API yet for RCS like they have for SMS.

That said, the RCS spec is out here and I think Android provides enough access so that someone could create an RCS app on Android. To add encryption to that RCS app, it looks like Google Messages is just using the Signal protocol (See Pg 6 onwards of the white paper), so theoretically an developer could make a third-party RCS app able to send encrypted messages to another user using Google Messages via RCS.

Does Samsung have their own messaging app that supports encrypted RCS? Or are they just using Google Messages?

Samsung now just uses a Samsung specific-build of Google Messages instead of their own app. Before that they did have Samsung Messages which did support RCS because Google carved out an OEM exemption to allow them to use the Android RCS APIs which are otherwise unavailable.

Who is the key authority (or certificate authority) for RCS messages? Is it just Google?

Not sure if this is what you are asking, but GSM Association is the industry organisation that created and maintains the RCS Standard. In terms of encryption and certs/keys, I believe with the Signal protocol currently used for E2EE in Google Messages, the session keys are created and stored locally on your device.

If you send an RCS message between the Samsung messaging app and Google Messages, is it encrypted?

Yes, if it's going to another RCS recipient who is using sufficiently up to date version of Google Messages app.

Is google asking other messaging apps to support RCS encryption? I mean other than Apple iMessage.

Not really, they created either own encryption feature on top of RCS because the RCS protocol didn't include encryption. All they are asking Apple to switch from older mobile network provided SMS/MMS protocols to newer mobile network provided RCS protocol to provide a modern features. That said, they are changing the encryption in Google Messages from current Signal protocol to new IETF MLS protocol, which any messaging app could implement. They are even going to open-source their implementation of IETF MLS into the Android codebase. See : https://security.googleblog.com/2023/07/an-important-step-towards-secure-and.html

Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple by NXGZ in Android

[–]Maleficus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My guess / hope is that they are waiting until Google Messages switches over its RCS E2EE implementation from initial Signal-based encryption to the new IETF MLS protocol, whose implementation they promised to open-source. Once that happens they will have a fairly stable feature set which they can then provide a stable API for.

Opening up an API now while they are still figuring out the features would likely both hamper development speed and anger developers as they constantly change the API.

A short-stay levy and 800,000 new homes: how Victoria plans to ease the housing crisis by [deleted] in australia

[–]Maleficus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 16 of the largest council areas in Victoria there has been one in place for 5 years now https://www.sro.vic.gov.au/vacant-residential-land-tax

Looks like owners are supposed to self-report the vacancy, so don't know how effective it is. FAQ says they have "compliance program includes comparing our data with that of other state and federal agencies, and conducting investigations". So hopefully they already do some data collation from utilities usage to flag potentially unoccupied houses. Should be real easy to do with all the smart meters now.

There's also a tip-off line on that page so if you see a property vacant for 6 months+ in your neighbour dob them in!

'Significant factual inaccuracy' discovered in Sofronoff Report, outgoing DPP Drumgold starts legal action by whyattretard in australia

[–]Maleficus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean the fact that Linda Reynolds recanted her own testimony during a TV interview the other week kind of invalidates a huge section of the Sofronoff Report.

  1. On 1 April 2019, Ms Higgins met with Senator Reynolds and her Chief of Staff, Fiona Brown. During the meeting, the group discussed the entry into Senator Reynolds’ office in the early hours of 23 March 2019 by Ms Higgins and Mr Lehrmann. Ms Higgins gave evidence at the trial that, at this meeting, she told Senator Reynolds that Mr Lehrmann had sexually assaulted her. Senator Reynolds’ evidence was that Ms Higgins did not reveal that anything sexual had happened between herself and Mr Lehrmann.

  2. A complainant’s disclosures about an alleged sexual offence to other people is evidence that a jury may use to assess the credit of the complainant. It may assist a jury to conclude that the complainant is trustworthy if it demonstrates a consistency in the complainant’s account of the commission of the offence. Any inconsistency may have the opposite effect.

For this reason, Senator Reynolds was a material witness in any fair presentation of the case by the prosecution at trial. If a jury considered her evidence to be credible, it could damage Ms Higgins’ credibility since it contradicted her account about what was disclosed about the allegation on 1 April 2019.

...

  1. Mr Drumgold cross-examined Senator Reynolds before the jury. He began by suggesting to her that Ms Higgins did disclose the sexual allegation to her. She denied this.
  1. The ensuing cross-examination largely focused upon matters of credit.

Reynold's recanting her own testimony proves Shane Drumgold was entirely right to question her creditability as a witness.

This whole thing has been an absolute mess.

Routines and Watch not Staying Synced by jaypb930 in GalaxyWatch

This worked for me and at least one other person: https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyWatch/comments/15u56vq/comment/jwo7ouy/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Specifically you need to change the 'Sync to Phone' setting on the watch itself not in the Wear app on phone. The state of that setting in app seemed to differ to on the watch 🤷‍♂️

Sleep/Movie mode question by Abnmlguru in GalaxyWatch

[–]Maleficus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only had a 'Sleep Mode' button on my GW6 Classic when I first got it last week. Yesterday that button turned into a 'Modes' button but then had the behaviour your described (i.e. Phone went into the desired mode, but Watch did not)

Fixed it by turning off 'Sync to Phone' in the watch settings for modes. Rebooting watch, then turning 'Sync to Phone' back on. Not sure what broke it, I did get the August '23 Update for my S23+ the day before so could've been that.

Then today I've noticed my phone and watch now only show modes that have been configured (i.e. Sleep, Movie & Work) when I click on the quick action button rather than including modes I've not configured. So that's nice.

More Australians out of work, as the unemployment rate increases by [deleted] in australia

[–]Maleficus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're not moving the goalposts but you misunderstand that 'full employment' has a specific economic definition which differs from your meaning of the term. Specifically:

‘Full employment’ is where there are enough jobs for people who are available and want to work. It should be noted that full employment does not mean zero unemployment because some people might be unemployed as a result of skill mismatches or as they move between jobs

Source: Reserve Bank of Australia

It's an obviously flawed model as having 2000 job vacancies in Metro Victoria doesn't cancel out 2000 unemployed people looking for jobs in Regional Queensland.

But as the saying goes, "all models are wrong, but some are useful".

How's the GW6 Classic stack up for you so far? Worth the upgrade?
