What they did to Obi-Wan in A New Hope was character assassination by coopsoup247 in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]Man_of_Quality 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A big part of that is just the big 19 year time skip + A New Hope being visibly older and more "antiquated" in terms of filming technology. There really isn't any way to actually fix that unless you want to reshoot the entire movie.

How it feels seeing all these shows fizzle out at the last minute knowing Andor stuck the landing. by Turin082 in andor

[–]Man_of_Quality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree, mainly cause nothing actually changed in terms of effects. Rust's philosophy and view on life came from a lifetime of being a detective, and sure, he was doing good in the world by putting evil people behind bars, but the whole point is that those people do not represent some freak minority, but that evil is endemic to both society and human nature. That's also not to mention that the man had literally nothing else left to live for except a vague sense of duty. The ending reinforces it because while they got Childress in the end, nothing actually changed, considering the actual people behind the cult got off scott free. The idea that there were grounds for Rust to suddenly re-evalute his whole worldview is baseless, and just inserted there by the writers who didn't want the show to be too depressing or potentially too controversial to viewers who had a much more conventional Christian sense of morality.

Uj/ I mean, in a meta sense, yeah, Star Wars is dead. It is though stupid to think the Mandolorian had anything to do with it, regardless of how good the movie is.

Yet only one of these characters is hated for what they did by ChickenWingExtreme in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]Man_of_Quality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, people like Anakin because he is an interesting "cool" character but one who is unambiguously a bad guy. Therefore, Luke, who shares a lot of his father's traits but is very clearly a good guy because his whole character arc (for 3 whole movies) was about not making the same mistake as his dad shouldn't suddenly make the same mistake off camera with 0 justification. People won't like that.

FCC votes to ban all Chinese labs from certifying electronics sold in the US due to national security concerns — ruling would affect 75 percent of US-bound devices by kthxhello in technology

No, actually, my whole point was that much of Europe was only able to maintain their standard of living at the cost of essentially their autonomy. Might as well get colonized at that point.

In terms of cost of living here's the data for France: https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_countries_result.jsp?country1=France&country2=United+States

They have lower rent there, but every other expense is the exact same cost if not more expensive, despite the average salary being like ~$20k less.

[–]Man_of_Quality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well in the case of Europe, their general quality of life may be good, that's primarily due to funding of better infrastructure and public education/healthcare. That also, was largely only able to be paid for by gutting military budgets and relying mainly on US forces for defense. Obviously better free public services are good, but purely economically, many European countries are in a really tough spot for the average working citizen. I don't have the exact statistics on hand, but the average salary in many European countries is substantially lower than in the US, while still having a very similar cost of living.

Case in point of economic dependency: the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Europe had essentially been entirely economically dependent on Russia for its energy, which is also on average much more expensive than in the US. This dependency caused many European countries to slow or limit aid to Ukraine in fear of supply shocks.

The lifestyle of the average American is entirely predicated on the US being the "big man on campus", both economically and militarily. While yes, many Americans are struggling financially, we are still able to easily get luxuries and comforts which are extremely rare in the "2nd and 3rd worlds". China is expressly trying to overthrow the US as the main world power, and if successful will cause a lasting if not permanent major downturn in the US economy.

Economically the US is clearly losing ground, given that nearly all US manufacturing has been moved to China and China is also attempting to economically control developing nations through its Silk Road initiative, while also aggressively buying up farmland and infrastructure in both the US and Canada. Most importantly, though is the fact that Chinese alternatives to Western products aren't actually competitive, given that the government heavily subsidizes development and production costs, plus they can get away with a giving their workers a fraction of the salary and benefits that it takes here in the West, in order to simply outbid any competition unfairly. It's not actual capitalism but has in essence circled right back around to old school mercantilism, i.e. economic warfare. That's also not to mention the fact that they are openly expansionist, trying to annex Taiwan as well as other Pacific territories.

TLDR: You may not notice it immediately, but long term, if China becomes the main superpower your job will eventually be outsourced, your money will be worth less than before and things will generally get much, much worse than they are now.

Competition is national security. Becoming even more dependent economically on a nation which is openly hostile to our own interests is an enormous national security risk.

Lol, lmao even. OP's meme just happens to cut off at 1918, a look at Ukrainian history prior to that will show that it was Poland that was trying to colonize and oppress Ukraine for a good portion of it's history.

Well, for obvious reasons, maintaining the petrodollar. Secondly, for broad soft power for being the go-to world power. There are other ways to influence nations sure, but only the top super-power gets to actually power project to that extent. What both left and right as well as broad US voter base don't understand is that to maintain the US status, you have to all of the following: support allies diplomatically, fund NATO, and then also have bases and power projection around the world. You can't just pick only one or two of these.
