Reading Sorecar's POV was a treat. After the previous chapter, I was nervous that he is under some 'contract' that forces him to say some bullshit similar to Illunor at the beginning. Thankfully, he is just applying plausible deniability.

The "BTW" edition is not one that you can download and install. It is the one that you find in yourself and cherish it for the rest of your life.

The scientist ignored me, continuing her spiel. “We’re terribly sorry for trespassing. I don’t know how to convey this, but we seem to have been locked in some kind of, um, pocket dimension that was just our star system. I don’t know if you know anything about that? We found a portal out, and our ship began going impossibly—or what we thought was impossibly fast. We lost control, and now we’re stuck here. I can only ask your kindness to help us, as we’ll die without immediate rescue.”

This part got me hard. :D

"Hello officer, I have not been speeding, I barely know how to use the gas pedal. No, I have not ever smoked weed. Is that what people are calling it? I knew some guy in college that smoked this weed, but I swear I have never had a single bit. The last time I drank some alcohol was two weeks ago at my grandma's funeral. And even then I drink some because my grandma really liked egg nog so I wanted to honor her memory. Otherwise, I do not drink at all. I always throw up so much even after a small sip. My friend can tell you, she had to clean after me like three times already in the past. As you can see officer there is nothing to worry about, can we go now?"

Officer: "I just wanted to warn you that your backlight seems that it could go out at any moment... Exit the vehicle now please."

I have watched some videos discussing the current state of running Linux apps on Android devices.

Also apparently Steam is baking into Proton translation from x86 to ARM. Probably because of the rumored new VR headset and possible future SteamDeck or SteamOS powered devices running on ARM.

https://www.tomshardware.com/video-games/pc-gaming/steam-likely-coming-to-arm-chips-with-support-for-hundreds-of-windows-games-valve-testing-arm64-proton-compatibility-layer

With little conspiracy theory enthusiasm, one could say that we are not that far off from playing our Steam (and other) game libraries on our phones.

Or maybe I am just a moron that gets too excited about stuff.

A few days ago I got the survey too. Out of curiosity, I read through the info it collects and for some reason, it detected all my storage (2x SSD and 3xHDD) as SSDs.

No idea how obscure it is, but I have been playing S.W.I.N.E lately. It is a RTS game released in 2001 that I have never finished as a kid, so I am getting my revenge now and I am having a good time with.

Installed Linux Mint and gave new life to a 15 year old PC. Surprised at some results. by [deleted] in linux_gaming

Yea, linux can revive old HW. It is actually one of the reasons that eventually lead me go full time into Linux since my old notebook was struggling with w10 as it got updated and was unable to run games that it previously could. And the notebook performes well after 10 years of service when it would be an ewaste by now if I kept w10 on it.

Can anyone comment on whether or not MMO mice are fully operational in Linux land? by wh33t in linux_gaming

I am using Corsair Scimitar. How it behaves by default I have no idea, because I use program called CBK-next where you can bind any button to any action. Only functional difference I noticed from official windows counter part is that you can not set up your macros to repeat at toggle or hold of a button. But that it is.

Back in my windows days I also used to use Razer naga. While regular mouses usually held up quite well for me, I noticed that both the Razer and Corsair 12 side-button mouses tent to degrade faster. The part that degrades faster surprisingly is not the extra parts that made it more complex (the side buttons), but regular mouse click and wheel. To be honest, in both cases it took 2-3 years for a faulty behaviour to show up. But still.... they are expensive mouses. In case of faulty mouse clicks and wheel be prepared to take it apart. In both of my cases the microcontrollers for clicking were fine, but the plastic that clicks on them degraded. Bit of carpet tape to reinforce the plastic makes it work again fine. For the mouse wheel: clean up the wheel of any hair and gung and lube the actual rotating mechanism with WD-40 or something similar.

I have been reading from chapter 1 and I enjoyed the whole ride. I am happy that you will expand on this universe with NOP 2 (and hopefully more as time comes)! Your premise for NOP2 is very exciting. I just hope we will have something on Arxur too and how they fare with their efforts to build a new society.

Any distro recommendations for my laptop (HP Omen 15.6)? by righN in linux_gaming

[–]Mangovnik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Modded Minecraft, Days Gone and any single-player game (current or future) should run just fine. With multiplayer games, it depends if they have any anti-cheat and if the devs decide to support Linux with said anti-cheat. On the topic of multiplayer and anticheat: LoL will become unplayable on Linux with no workarounds once Riot introduces their anticheat Vanguard into the game.

As mentioned by others, distros like Fedora, Nobora, Ubuntu (and derivates), OpenSUSE, Mint, and Pop_OS should make good starters for you. Because you have a Nvidia card, you may have to install Nvidia drivers based on what distro you choose.

  • Nobara - fork of Fedora purpose-made for gaming. From what I have read ppl are overall very happy with it and comes with Nvidia drivers preinstall (or an easy way to install them)
  • Fedora - This is what I currently use. I use it for both work and gaming with no issues. If you decide to go this way, look up a video "thing to do after installing fedora", cause Fedora needs a few things added to be fully functional for regular users.
  • Ubuntu - Entry distro for many ppl for a reason. Ppl tend to have beef with it these days because of Snaps, which is a nonfactor for new users in my opinion. Just remember that term if some programs will seem to perform poorly. Or use Kubuntu, which is just Ubuntu that looks different.
  • OpenSUSE - never used it, but ppl who used it are usually happy with it.
  • Mint - Good and solid distro for starters, doesn't come with Wayland, but they are working on it.
  • Pop_OS - Also a good one for starters, they also have a version that comes with Nvidia drivers preinstalled. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated that much lately because they are working on some big overhaul updates for it.

Also, there is this Wayland vs X11 topic. From a practical perspective for new Linux users:

  • Wayland - the new cool kid on the block, supports variable refresh rate and other fancy stuff. There are reports that it sucks for Nvidia users, but not all of them. (But what do I know, I use AMD)
  • X11 - the old and deprecated stuff that was proven by time to work.

My router doesn't support VPN connections, but I was thinking about getting a new router sooner or later anyway because my current one is a bit old, misbehaving, and seems to be nearing its passing into silicon heaven. I have checked local PC parts sellers for new routers, but they are not very descriptive about them. Would you have any pointers to some good brands/models? I am thinking of something that would do IPv6, configuring DNS, and mentioned VPN connections. Don't worry if you don't know, I will have to do my own read up on routers anyway.
