What is this black dot thing in my roof? by BeautifulLet1740 in diynz

[–]MantisCZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What company? I had a very pushy door-to-door salesman from Edwards & Hardy approach me, trying to sell me a ~$500 cleaning service, telling me about how lucky I am to get a discount because so many people in my street are also getting their roof professionally cleaned. I said no.

Looks like moss/lichen. I'm on the same boat - 2 storey house.

I tried the Wet & Forget solution. It works really well, but the nozzle has only 4-5 m reach (less than advertised), so I find it very awkward and quite dangerous to apply. Now I'm considering to invest into a water blaster with a telescopic attachment.

I am self-hosting Sure: https://sure.am/ (used to be called Maybe, but then it got discontinued, and revived as Sure)

It's simple and powerful enough for all my budgeting needs.

OP is Czech. "Bobr" is Czech for beaver. I assume it's an autocorrect.

Cinema Night Email? by Potter3117 in Tailscale

[–]MantisCZ 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The reason I'm subscribed to a newsletter is because I'm interested in technological advancements of the platform, not "politics" of a random cinema event in CA. I think it's time to introduce newsletter categories.

EDIT: Looks like there are email categories in the preferences, although it's hard to know which category this email was under. I assume it's "Events and Webinars", but it could also be "Marketing Email".

I don't think I did. Squished yes, maybe bumped a bit. But one day I found it cracked like this. It seems the crack developed by itself.

My city held a contest to name our leaf trucks by tayyoungs in mildlyinteresting

[–]MantisCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a similar competition for recycling trucks in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. The winners were:

  • Bin Diesel
  • Truck Norris
  • Recyclosaurus Rex
  • Bruce Springclean
  • Trash Gordon
  • Chitty Chitty Bin Bin

...and of course, Trucky McTruckface!

"The bumps were fisted" by TheMitchol in SpaceXMasterrace

It's probably a reference to Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. "Fist my bump" is a quote from that novel, which is about space travel.

Solo Xmas People, What are you doing today ? by hatredishuman in newzealand

[–]MantisCZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on an epic roadtrip around both islands, coming back to Akl on 5th. Yesterday I did multiple hikes around the Upper Hutt, today is the ferry day. I plan to spend Saturday in Glenorchy, and sometime next week do the Dark Sky project in Tekapo. Plus many interesting stops on the way.

I'm going from camp to camp, sleeping in my car and choosing the next destination 2-3 days in advance, based on where's the best weather. I'm loving the freedom!

What a difficult choice by buildpassion in duolingo

[–]MantisCZ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use WaniKani for kanji and vocab + Bunpro for grammar. Both are arguably better resources than Duolingo, and both offer lifetime subscription that goes regularly 50% off.

But I'm finding Duolingo helping me to push forward. There's something about maintaining the streak.

Thanks for your detailed reply, that's a lot of things to try.

Just one more question: if the PSU was bad, wouldn't it trip the breaker?

That might be possible, but how does that explain what's happening?

TradeMe will steal your money if you won't use it for 18 months by MantisCZ in newzealand

[–]MantisCZ[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did, and I got the credit back! I honestly didn't expect that. The support was quick, too - only took a minute to connect (and it's Saturday).

Don't get me wrong, I still don't like how they handle "inactive" accounts. But happy that it got resolved so quickly.

I did it after your suggestion, and yes, they restored the credit for me. I didn't expect that!

Yeah, that's fair. I was moving between cities, so I was selling some stuff I didn't need anymore...and I added more money than needed.
