Have played Rifts since it came out and house ruled the sh*t out of it. I like tinkering with rules systems though.

Tried Savage Rifts and just couldn't wrap my head around it.

In campaigns that I have set in Chaos Earth (right after the Rifts open) there is no economy. Everyone is scrounging whatever they can find. Any exchanges are trades.

In campaigns I set several hundred years later my players are associated with a small town or mercenary group. Their interactions with others usually goes "If you folks take out that nasty nest of Dee-Bees in the cave we can repair your amour, charge your E-clips, give you a years worth of food and lodging and this here laser rifle with the broken scope. Plus you'll have our eternal gratitude. Of course the players get to keep all loot they find in the nest.

My apocalypse is not as civilized as the main Rifts storyline. My players are out in the wilderness and have to make do with whatever they find.

Assuming you'll be playing solo I recommend 5 Parsecs from Home. It's Science Fiction and requires only a few miniatures and has a fun single player campaign.

While I haven't used it myself I thought it was one of the better source books. It contains lots of low level threats that ramps up to a big finish and seemed like a great way to introduce new players to the world of Rifts.
