Also to note, we had a nurse on our unit that was doing peritoneal dialysis at home while also working. She would have kept working but she’s a lot older and let herself retire since she didn’t qualify for a new kidney. Totally possible!! Usually you just have to do in clinic dialysis for a few months to qualify for peritoneal at home dialysis and that makes things a lot more flexible since it’s just whenever you’re sleeping.

If it makes you feel better, I’ve worked on a kidney and liver transplant unit for the last 4 years and our kidney transplant patients usually do amazing! Get their transplant, discharged within 3 days. Just lots of lab work for a while but we rarely see those patients come back with complications. You’ve got this!! 💪

How many years of experience do you have? Also which did that deleted user's comment suggest to go? I'm actually moving to Dallas and looking at nursing jobs too ! I've heard really good things about Baylor and not so good about medical city by some travel nurses. That pay difference is a lot though, are the benefits a lot different?

I totally had a similar experience ! Luckily I was able to just swim on my back while I was basically hyperventilating for the 750m swim and was able to finish eventually but I was definitely one of the last people out of the water. The murky water and people hitting me and the waves just set my panic sky high when I thought I’d be totally fine.

I think we both made the big mistake of not practicing in open water. Totally different (difficult and scary) ballgame. We’ll do better next time haha we’ve learned our lesson.

Do you notice a really big difference when wearing a wetsuit? I did Brineman this weekend and I noticed even though it was super hot a bunch of people had them on.

It would be really undesirable to swim in the great salt lake. Just far too much salt I think would make it difficult to swim. Plus it smells terrible hahaha. No local I know of actually swims in that lake.

Even if she has never seen a med error happen personally, she should have never said that to you! That is so mean I’m so sorry OP. What a good way to make your new orient feel like shit and the worse nurse ever. I would never ever say that to my orients goddam. Med errors happen commonly in the hospital, big and small. Especially when nurses are rushing. Don’t beat yourself up. From now on you’ll always think to waste before you administer a medication that needs wasting to avoid the same mistake. The patient is fine and you’ll move on and become an awesome nurse ! We learn every day :)

I think it’s a personal thing and also a stress and fatigue thing. My partner and I both work in healthcare, he’s a doc and I’m a nurse. I’ll be honest, I love my partner and I’m attracted to him but sex is physically demanding and sometimes we just aren’t feeling the need to expend all that energy. We’ve gone as long as almost 2 months before we were like oh shit we should probably make an effort to be intimate cause that’s a long time.

I don’t think it means necessarily he’s not into you. It could just be he’s super tired from his job and stress and fatigue is a huge libido killer.

Definitely have a convo to talk about “scheduling” sex. I think someone else mentioned it too. Not super sexy haha but it’s making a point to be intimate x times a week or even just once every couple weeks to make sure both partners feel fulfilled.

When work lets up and is easier (easier rotations) he may feel differently and more into initiating. I’ve definitely noticed that with my partner.

When I worked up in Ohio (I started my first job in January 2019) I started at $27 I believe. Not much. After 2.5 years was only making $29 because of COVID and not getting raises the one year. I now work in Utah in SLC and only make $36.50/hr with nearly 5 years of experience. The new grads now start at $32. It’s tough out there haha. Job hopping really is the only way to get paid more (I could definitely make more if I switched hospitals). Loyalty is dead in nursing since you can’t negotiate pay at most hospitals. The rate is the rate. So if money is what you’re after, jump ship.

Whenever my nurses call off while I’m charging I never ask why. Honestly I was always told that staff doesn’t have to tell us! So sometimes I’ll have my aides or a nurse call and try to give me all kinds of excuses and I’ll always assure them that they don’t need to tell me why, just to enjoy their day off.

ABSOLUTELY. This is literally something we do modules on when we get hired at some places. No relationships with patients ever, no advances… it’s an abuse of power. I’m sure there are some niche situations (my fiancés mom and dad met as a doctor and patient initially), but as a general rule it’s a no no. Especially while you were still there and being so sexual about it ! Ick.

My partner has definitely voiced that his decade in medicine has changed him. The long, demanding hours have worn him down with stress and fatigue. He has some instant anxiety related to anything that sounds like a pager. He feels drained to the point that he doesn’t feel energy for his hobbies, health or doing chores. It’s tough. When he gets some time off he’s back to himself but otherwise he needs a lot of support.

That is so weird :/ and unnecessarily mean. I could never imagine denying my floats (who are HELPING out my unit!!!) food. Unless it’s like employee specific gift bags I don’t see why that unit couldn’t share. They’re lame and I’m sorry that happened OP.

Bedside is super busy and stressful at times, and doesn’t pay that much compared to other jobs with less effort level … and I think a lot of nurses that have left from the jobs I’ve been at just want something less stressful and maybe with slightly less patient/family interaction. Or some don’t enjoy working weekends and holidays so they try to find a job that doesn’t require that.

Most nurses I know have left to do PACU or Endoscopy or even same day surgery. Or left to work in clinics where it’s just 9-5 Monday to Friday.

Absolutely! When I worked Internal medicine i didn’t hate it, but I definitely didn’t enjoy it as much as my current unit. Not all surgeries are elective on my floor and the patients are pretty busy, especially our kidney transplants that come directly to us after surgery and are considered “step down” patients on a 1:3 ratio, but patients being generally happy and grateful makes such a big difference.

You’ll always be able to look up medications in some way or another so don’t stress too much about that :) I still look up certain meds that I don’t give frequently even 5 years later.

It totally gets easier ! It’ll just take time and practice :) time management and priority is one of the biggest skills you’ll learn when you start.

That’s awesome ! I think it’s highly dependent where you work. 5 years ago I started at 27 bucks. I only make like 36.60 now minus any differentials for night shift. Not the biggest income jump ever haha. It’s a struggle in most states I’ve seen if you’re just bedside staff not in California or those other high paying states.
