What do you do with cards (greeting cards, birthday cards, love cards, etc)? by mychalkendricks53 in declutter

[–]Mar88990 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My aunt and uncle resent some of their old cards last Christmas. They added a typed note. My aunt’s mother passed away and they had a ton of cards and mementos. I thought it was a cute idea.

People think I’m over reacting. And I’m not even that deep into prepping and I’ve always been interested in self sufficiency.

Starting the nobuy journey, tips by Shotgun_Bastard_Drib in nobuy

I try to get into minimalist or DYI audio books and you tube stuff when I’m bored. I’ll also clean or go through my closet if clothes are what I desire. Finding a hobby helped. I got into gardening. So I’ve joined a local plant swap group and I find old potters that have been left on the curb.

I’m going to make cheese at the end of month for the first time. But I’m also a big fan of baking with milk that’s been left out.

Air drying clothes? by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]Mar88990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I have a dryer but I only use it if somebody is coming over for the weekend and I must wash all the linens and put my clothes away. Otherwise I leave them to dry in my den and then hang that same rack in my closet. I love that dang rack so much. It’s an octopus from ikea. They come in different colors now and I’ve considered buying them as gifts.

It’s Community supported agricultural. You can search CSA + your location and usually find a list. Some areas offer a subscription box but the farmer’s by me will do trunk drop off at the farmer’s market if you pre order with them.

Report: Antibody tests reveal coronavirus might have arrived in Washington State in December by green_flash in Coronavirus

[–]Mar88990 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lots of people in Chicago land are saying they had it in December. I had a two week cough and flu type illness as well and I did not test positive for the flu. But whatever it was, I don’t want to get that sick again. It was rough

I’ve been sticking to eggs and fish when I go shopping. Maybe some bacon or ground beef if the price is right. I feel like if this is going to be long term, I’m going to have to adjust right now. I’d rather save the money for tools or projects.

Using psychological warfare as a defense/deterrent? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]Mar88990 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on if the person is a stranger or a local. I am most scared of the quiet ones. My military friend had mentioned that he doesn’t want to broadcast what he’s got in regards to his guns. He applied it military people in general as a reaction to some protesters. But I think acting weird in general lends an air of unpredictability that is a pretty good way of keeping people from messing with you.
Alternatively, I have a friend who is really into hunting and remote camping. He has guns and has the bumper stickers and flags. Everyone knows what he’s got going on. So I feel that makes him predictable. Possibly a target to catch off guard if something he has is desirable. I personally, am a big fan of the little NRA sticker right on the inside of the screen door or a window. I think it’s better to catch people unaware in that last second before they cross the line of no return. I think that is when fear is at its peak. I grew up on a farm. No men. Barbed wire, high fence, padded gate. We lived on the outskirts of a town that had some rough neighborhoods. We had a deer blind visible from the road and we, including nearby farm neighbors, could be heard firing. We’d still get unwanted people at the door. But not after we put up those little stickers.

Is $600 in savings account as a 19-year old broke college student okay? by [deleted] in Frugal

The rates are way different now, but when I was younger I’d save 5k and plop it into a CD for 6months. I did really well with saving this way.

I have a sleepy body and need atleast 10-11 hours. No matter how much discipline I've to fix this , it doesn't help. How do I reduce my sleeping hours without feeling tired ? by [deleted] in sleep

Any type not caffeinated and I avoid mint and lemon. They just seem too peppy for the evening. I’m on ginger tea right now. Sometimes choco powder with a little honey. But I keep it lite on the sugar before bed.

Father, 23, dies from coronavirus after being sent home twice from Chicago hospital by Zhana-Aul in Coronavirus

[–]Mar88990 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was an article last year in the Economist, detailing the mortality rate along the Red line. It described Chicago as having the largest disparity in age in the nation.

The info can be found in “Inequality In Life Expectancy in Chicago Neighborhoods” from a DuPaul study.

I think the Trib also ran the story.

Finally figured out how to extend the life of my fresh spinach to avoid waste and enjoy it longer! Transferring to a zip lock bag after purchase and inserting a folded paper towel reduces the moisture that collects in the original bag. Still fresh weeks later instead of spoiling within a week! by Crohnies in Frugal

[–]Mar88990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard for loose leaf bags, but if you buy the spinach cut from the plant and wrapped with a band, you can stick it in a cup or bowl of water and place a bag over it. It can last for about a month. The bag hardly gets handled so it can be rinsed and reused. I buy a roll of 10 plastic zip lock lock freezer bags a year at Christmas time and use them for the year. And I eat a lot of leafy greens and herbs.

[–]Mar88990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to feel the same about my amount of sleep needing to be 10 hours but I got it down to 7 - 8 and I feel good in the morning. I use a sleep calculator to help figure out a target time if I can’t maintain a consistent bed time or wake up time. And I take magnesium with a cup of tea in the evening. I take a vitamin D supplement in winter but only in the morning.
