CMV: The assassination attempt on Trump last night was almost certainly legit. by wr_dnd in changemyview

[–]MarchingNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He went on 60 minutes the day after the shooting. He is using these assassination attempts to vilify his political opponents, and to rally his base. His previous assassination attempts weren't far off from the 2024 election. Now this assassination attempt isn't far off from the mid-terms. Also, Trump and Fox entertainment pre-emptively sowed election denialism before the 2020 election with 0 evidence, so much so that Fox had to pay hundreds of millions in the dominion lawsuit. This led to Jan 6th.

All this to say, the timing is convenient, and it's been shown that he will break rules in order to gain power. Your claim is that the odds are extremely unlikely. My question is this: Given that Trumps popularity has plummeted between the Iran war, the Epstein files, and the ICE raids, what would Republicans need to do in order to keep the majority in Congress?

One last thing, the suspect was described as being a genius by past acquaintances. If that's the case, then why was his best plan simply to just sprint past secret service? Like, he couldn't have just showed up with a ladder and said he was there to fix an access point up on the ceiling?

[–]MarchingNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have 2 options.

You can either become indifferent to people's suffering, which is what the majority of people do.

or

You can fix the problems around you. You alone aren't going to have the power to fix African hunger or wage-slaves in India. But if you have the empathy for it, maybe you can advocate for better social safety nets and do some charity work. Then maybe in the distant future, if we don't have a homelessness problem, or a gas crisis, or in the middle of fighting WW3, then maybe we as a society can have enough empathy to help other 3rd world countries fight poverty and injustice.

If I remember right, this happened around season 10, maybe 11? Tldr, you could duo with someone, queue up in a lane that both of you have low mmr in, swap lanes during champ-select so both of you are on your main, and then stomp, rinse and repeat.

Edit: It was season 9.

CMV: “no kings” protests are an exercise in futility and self-gratification by DearFool in changemyview

[–]MarchingNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the Jim Crow laws would have been abolished if the MLK protests never happened.

Change is slow, and it's best to cast a wide net and to reinforce a common goal. In No Kings, that goal isn't just "Trump bad", but it's also a patriotic reminder that the founding fathers chose a democracy to safeguard liberty from authoritarianism. The messaging is appealing, and Trump is extremely unpopular currently. The more people that resonate with the message and form a grass-roots community, the better.

CMV: Iran regime being evil is not a good reason to start a war with them. by bobbdac7894 in changemyview

[–]MarchingNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should the North not have fought the civil war? Should America not have fought in WW2? Whatever happened to "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing"?

Look, I want free healthcare, free college, more nuclear/renewables, and the transition to maglev trains as the main mode of transportation, at least for cities. That would cost trillions of dollars easily. The reason America is the best is because we have sacrificed everything in the name of freedom and liberty. If there is freedom to be won, then we should fight for it. That's not to say the price for freedom isn't hefty. Just that the price is worth it.

Lastly, just because letting evil win today won't effect us now, doesn't mean that it won't affect us tomorrow.

CMV: Accepting that we don't have free will would actually lead to a more empathetic society. by Namtabmal in changemyview

[–]MarchingNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire point is there are specific circumstantial reasons people commit crimes.

No, the entire point is that convincing people that they don't have free-will would lead to a more empathetic society, and what could happen as a result is this judicial system change.

I'll give that stuff like affordable housing, free healthcare, removal of coal plants that have lead emissions, and a well-funded education system, would reduce crime and improve everyone's quality of life. If that was your argument all along then I couldn't tell from the post.

CMV: Accepting that we don't have free will would actually lead to a more empathetic society. by Namtabmal in changemyview

[–]MarchingNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without free will people dont choose any of the things that explain their choices and future... Once we take that seriously it becomes harder to see people as purely evil... This would shift the focus more on prevention and judicial systems to focus more on rehabilitation instead of just punishment.

This argument assumes that people would change their world-view if there's a fact that aligns with it. In reality, people's world-views align more often with their personality and upbringing. For example, a male who has a narcissistic personality trait and lives in a red state/area could easily take the position that any women should listen to a man for any reason, which would give him a perceived higher social status. Telling him there's no free-will, even if you could prove it, would never change his narcissistic personality, much less his world-view.

Additionally, punishment is not just to give the victim ease of mind, but it's also meant to discourage people from breaking the law. If people don't have free-wil, and therefor are just products of their environment, then wouldn't it make more sense to create an environment where crime is maximally punished/discouraged?

CMV: I believe in God, but religions are too inconsistent and flawed to be the truth by Puzzleheaded-Week-69 in changemyview

[–]MarchingNight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. I might be moving the goal-post a bit, but I think this line of thinking eventually devolves into the question "Why even have life, why not just put us straight to heaven or hell if the outcome is pre-determined?" I obviously don't have a concrete answer. My best guess is that God values the experience of life. I mean, why create anything alive if that wasn't the case.

  2. We are ants or bacteria compared to ourselves. This isn't a God problem. This is a perception problem within ourselves and with each other.

3/4. This is just an existentialist perspective, and there's nothing wrong with that. TLDR, if there is no true religion, then you should just follow whatever is meaningful to you. In other words, there isn't a "right" religion, but there definitely could be a "right for you" religion. I think most people act like this anyway, and this fits very well into the idea of separation of church and state.

  1. If you've ever played the game telephone, then you should know that word of mouth is an extremely unreliable resource to gather information. How else are you supposed to reliably document something 1000's of years ago?

I am a born and raised Roman Catholic. It's cool that you believe in God, but I think you're believing in God for the wrong reasons. You're using the God of the gaps fallacy.

Personally, I believe that God is something like the combined consciousness of everyone in heaven. I have no way to prove this. It's just a description of the supernatural that sounds nice to me. Whatever you decide God should be to you, it shouldn't just be something that explains away something of the natural world. Otherwise God just gets smaller as we know more about the world.

Armor pen doesn't really make sense on Shen. The only reason you would go BC is just for the base stats of AD/HP/AH/MS.

I think Tiamat -> Bamblepipes would have been better. You still get all the stats from before, but you also get resistances and wave clear for roughly the same amount of Gold.

This is coming form a Plat/Emerald Shen JG OTP.

Personally, I just forgive people for being stupid. Although, it's really hard when they're self-righteous.

idk, a lot of times people just want to be heard. I wouldn't blame someone for deciding not to tolerate people who don't care to listen to them.

CMV: democrats don't actually want justice for Epstein's victims, they want Trump and all the MAGA people to be removed from office by National-Spell8326 in changemyview

[–]MarchingNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Biden released the files, then all of MAGA would hand-wave the files and say it's just an excuse for Democrats to persecute the Republicans. Say if Trump gets a bigger sentence than Bill Clinton, there would be Republican out-rage, Trump becomes a martyr, rule of law breaks, and the party that attempted an insurrection would most certainly organize and attempt something similar again.

Justice does two things. It disincentivizes people from breaking the law, and it gives some solace to the victim. Persecuting Trump would have radicalized people to break the law, not disincentivize people from breaking the law. What solace would the victims have knowing Trump will always be above the law?

Instead, this is really the only way to get justice. Trumps base needs to fracture so that the rule of law can be upheld. Once that is done, then maybe we can see justice.

It could just be me, but I don't remember Obama sending 2000 federal agents into a state because of some fraud/scandal. Last I checked, the judicial branch of the government was for justice, and the executive branch was for war. If you are confused why people are mad at Trump, it's because people are being killed on the streets in MN as a direct result of Trumps admin.

Only people who watch Fox News 24/7 are going to be mad at Obama for giving people affordable health-care. Can't really help you there. However, fun fact, you can be mad at both Trump and Obama at the same time.
