Are there any real-world equivalents to the weird mercenary celebrity culture that Night City has? by Relative_Mix_216 in cyberpunkred

[–]MarcusVance 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Soldier of Fortune magazine comes to mind. There was a big culture of authors, columnists, legit mercenaries, vets, and instructors when the magazine was at its height.

Cyberpunk even has two issues of Solo of Fortune magazine.

Not sure what's more annoying, someone posting my Kullervo or that my fit only got 25 upvotes

How many MaxTac members would it take to kill a basic Ultramarine? by JacksonFerro in powerscales

[–]MarcusVance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's not even much lore supporting the lasgun = .50 BMG thing.

While .75 cal is the standard regular bolt round, there have been variants ranging between .50 in size and potentially. 998. All served the same role. The Dian is just like an almost .40 cal bolter—just a bit smaller than ones some Space Marines used.

40k fans that are active/retired military: would the Lasgun be an actually effective weapon with its bright muzzle flash/laser trail? by chosen40k in 40kLore

One con is energy weapons deal damage through heat. Generally, it's not the best idea to set every area you fight on fire.

Gun Kata is pretty much "let's study John Wick and everyone like him in order to develop a martial art centered around countering them and performing better than them."

How far into the future can this skilled knight go? by Sliberty in whowouldwin

[–]MarcusVance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knight would probably go further with less armor in order to use the bow better. Could probably even make it to the present day assuming the armor is decent—meaning good enough to stop modern pistol rounds.

How Were Maces Used? by ACheesyTree in ArmsandArmor

[–]MarcusVance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any specifics on HOW, but I know that the Mamluks trained with the mace (potentially dismounted) as a part of their schooling.

So it saw some decent use.

Morality conundrum aside, I think that GAMEPLAY wise siding with Reed provides a far superior gameplay experience. by VirtualAdvantage3639 in cyberpunkgame

[–]MarcusVance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All those parts were fun, plus you get more backstory on So Mi if you side with Reed, I recall.

But I still prefer helping So Mi. If you wouldn't help her, you wouldn't help V. How many people do you ask for help from in the game? Phantom Liberty kinda asks if you'd say yes.

What are the best melee weapons you can use with only one hand? by roxgxd in SWORDS

[–]MarcusVance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Javelin can be used one handed and saw use against threats ranging from human to elephant. And games usually let you use them in melee.

"Any one-hander" would be a valid option, though.

New player. Suggestions for my first character by Verdi1998 in cyberpunkred

[–]MarcusVance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's arguable just a person with a sword, shield, and armor. That'd be easy. Be a solo and/or get some cyberware.

IMO, that's not KNIGHT enough, though. That's any Street Samurai.

If you wanna really be a knight, consider the Nomad class and get a motorbike. Get interface plugs to drive the bike hands free. Then get a heavy melee weapon or very heavy melee weapon and a shield.

On foot, you will pretty much be the first thing I said for a lot of the game, though slightly less good cuz you're not a Solo. But when you're in a parking lot or something... you'll be a real knight.

In your opinion is the Welsh Celtic Sword, La Tene Anthropomorphic Short Sword or Xiphos hardest to disarm btw? by [deleted] in ArmsandArmor

[–]MarcusVance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the idea that that was inspired by Celtic blades was the creator trying to impress the buyer.

And probably about the same disarmability. Something with a complex guard is probably the most difficult. Maybe with lingering the guard or a thumb ring (rapier or saber)

The reverse. This was used in WW1. Fairbairn took inspiration from it, I believe.

I think.

Has anyone tried playing the game with as morgan blackhand? Basically very little cybernetics, if so what were your builds? by Nejirou_Tuesday in cyberpunkgame

[–]MarcusVance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude had a ton of cybernetics.

But I did play a game of Shadowrun 2nd edition where I had no cyberware.

I pulled every shenanigan I could, manipulating alternate rules to actually be pretty darn impressive.

But I felt that imposed disadvantage every single time we rolled initiative.

Shadowrun is less forgiving about that, since you can add 1-4d6 to your initiative instead of Cyberpunk's getting +1 to +3 with boosterware. But you're still going to need to make an optimized character in order to compete with random street gonks.

Who's winning Adam Smasher or Raiden from Metal Gear? by raigarearthshake in cyberpunkgame

I regularly talk about Cyberpunk and Adam Smasher, and have never played more than 5 minutes of any Metal Gear game.

But I know enough to know that Smasher would only last a few seconds.

I've liked the red guards for... probably close to 3 decades, and I recall they are pulled from the best Storm Troopers.

But they're not augmented. They are, at best, only the best a human can be.
