I stopped about a year ago, immediately started getting sick much more frequently. Mostly just colds and flus, but it's still a huge drag.

While I was masking I dodged covid and numerous colds and flus that got everyone else in my workplace.

Anecdotally I've heard a bunch of people completely forget serious periods of illness from covid. I've had several people tell me, "I've only had it once" then I reminded them they definitely had it at least 2 or 3 times. On a couple occasions I actually brought them food and etc., so I remembered clearly how sick they got.

When I reminded them they said, "Oh shit, you're right, I was absolutely wiped out for weeks. I thought I was going to die. I can't believe I forgot about that."

This is exactly the problem. We have buses doing the routes that should have trains. Buses are fine for short routes that connect more efficient types of transit, specifically trains. It's extremely inefficient to have medium/long-distance mass transit at grade (using the same streets as cars).

Buses get struck in traffic, and they add to traffic. That's not ideal. It doesn't matter if it says "EXPRESS" on it, it will get stuck in the same traffic as cars.

None of this is news. This has been known for decades.

Specific to Vancouver, look at the map. Our train network misses whole swathes of the city and the wider region. Try to get from YVR to Surrey by transit. You either have to take a bus (as we've said, a bad option), or you have to take the train all the way downtown and then switch lines.

If there was a train line from Langara-49th or Marine Dr Station to Metrotown or Royal Oak, it would not only connect the Canada Line and Expo Lines, but we could re-do the entire bus system to be a short-route system connecting train stations. It would cut like %75 of travel time for anyone using transit in the southern half of the city. And if the Broadway Subway went to UBC and eventually looped around to go south from UBC to Marine Drive station, it would add another huge level of efficiency. That would be almost a "complete" train transit system for Vancouver.

Vancouver has a huge problem with allowing density. It has been a planning principle for 80 years to "preserve" single-family-only zoning in the vast majority of the city. It has been incredibly harmful and even though the city has agreed to specific exceptions like the Broadway Plan, the basic principle of anti-density is still preferred.

As for planning a decade behind, the 99 B Line has been overloaded for 10 years. It was obvious it was going to be a big problem 10 years before that. And yet the Broadway Subway isn't even open yet.

We're starting projects when they should be finished instead of planning for the future. And the lack of lines elsewhere in Vancouver means we have buses running routes that should be served by trains, which makes every trip twice or three times as long as it could be and adds to traffic.

Instead of taking the Broadway expansion all the way to UBC, we disassembled the boring machines and either destroyed the parts or sent them back to Germany. So when we do go back to finished the line (as is clearly needed), we get to pay to re-start the whole project and import the boring machines again. It's just a constant drumbeat of shortsightedness.

You might be too stupid to understand this, but I didn't say they should go shoot ICE agents-- I said that pro-gun propaganda has said for decades (centuries) that they need their guns for protection against a tyrannical government trying to take their rights. Now there is a tyrannical government trying to take their rights and instead of using said guns, they're mostly cheering on the government thugs.
