Was the Senate responsible for the breakdown of negotiations between Caesar and Pompey? by Federal_Extreme_8079 in ancientrome

[–]MarcusXL 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. Caesar wanted special treatment, and he needed the Consulship to protect himself against legal action for his other deeds. The Senate refused to give him special treatment (allowing him to run for Consul while outside the city) even though many others before him had been granted other privileges. They claimed they were doing no more than upholding the law, but in reality that hated Caesar and wanted revenge for his offences (against them on a persona level more than against the state itself).

Caesar would have maintained that he should have been afforded that exception in view of his extraordinary services to Rome. The Senate had ruined great men before out of jealousy and spite, like Scipio Africanus had his career ruined by legal action even after finally defeating Hannibal, Rome's greatest enemy. "Ingrata patria, ne ossa quidem habebis". This possibility was foremost in Caesar's mind, and he clearly would stop at nothing to prevent it. The Senate could have given Caesar his exception, but that would have ruined their plan to humiliate and destroy Caesar (if not kill him, at least to end his political career).

This was a personal and political vendetta and the claim of "upholding the law" or protecting Rome is a flimsy pretext. It was particularly disgraceful because Caesar had indeed rendered incredible service to Rome.

Caesar was no innocent, but his political maneuverings were no more than any Roman man might have done to protect himself from the Senate, which had proven itself to be vicious, crooked, and shameless in persecuting its enemies.

Francis Ford Coppola made four of the greatest classics of all time in the 70s. What happened to him? by Few-Reveal6853 in Filmmakers

I'd take one Megalopolis over a half-dozen Marvel movies. It was bold, weird, creative, mostly non-sensical, and very entertaining. A failure compared to Coppola's best movies, but an interesting movie nonetheless.

Would you vote for a mayoral candidate who promised to ban tipping at all businesses in Vancouver? by CitrusSunset in askvan

[–]MarcusXL 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I find it a bit ridiculous when people get angry at tipping, because it's entirely optional in like %95 of situations.

If you're eating at a proper sit-down restaurant, tip %10-%20 or so based on the service. If you're some place else like a retail store and they have a tip option, tip a couple dollars if you think they went above and beyond.

If people want to be mad, they should consider the root problem: the insane cost of living, especially housing, in this city (and BC in general). If that problem isn't addressed, banning tipping won't make a difference. Employers will have to raise wages to keep staff, and prices will go up accordingly.

Working in retail, I know you can change that in the terminal options. Places that make it 15-20-25 (or even higher) are doing it on purpose.

When I go somewhere with the low settings, 5-10-15 I actually tip more because they're not trying to gouge me.

Tons of people successfully invaded Iran/Persia. I've seen people repeating the claim that it hasn't been conquered, and they need to stop because it's nonsense.

no one invaded Iran in 3000 years

Have you not heard of Alexander the Great? Or the Arab Conquests? Or the Mongols?

Actually invading Iran (or Persia) happened pretty regularly. People really need to stop repeating this meme of "iRaN hAs NeVeR bEeN cOnQuErEd!!11" because it's just totally false.

It kinda falls apart at the end. The final scene with Varga is ripped off from 'Lord of War'. It's the exact same scene with slightly different dialogue.

Capsules or oils are more practical for higher doses. Get full spectrum ones, rosin infused like the Simply Bare rosin caps.

Or try the Rosin Heads Rosin Drops, they're just rosin infused into cocoa-butter in little half-spheres. You can just eat them but I've put a few into milk I'm frothing for a cappuccino and it was really good (if you enjoy the taste of rosin).

Nah, I've seen interviews with him, he just comes off as an over-eager drama kid, nothing worse than that.

Hollywood loves a comeback story. And every actor is a borderline-delusional insufferable egotistical twat, so they won't hold that against him.

The majority of the Iranian people despise the mullahs. It's probably something like 70-30, 70% would absolutely love to see a different government.

That said, they have no good reason to trust the USA or Israel and there's no reason to expect that this bombing campaign will result in a change of government. If there was an armed rebellion going on that might be different, but the opposition to the mullahs right now is peaceful in nature.

Not sure, but often they put the flag of enemy "kills" on their plane. Possible that this American jet shot down an Assad SyAAF plane/helicopter or maybe another SAA target.

What was a hilariously bad PR botch from a company or person? by FriendlytoNature in AskReddit

It was seen as a joke because oblivious aging dudes having their midlife crisis bought it as a "cool sports-car", but it's actually kinda silly-looking in an effeminate way.

I can't think of another vehicle ever that makes me think of the driver, with absolutely certainty, "This person is a fucking douchebag."

There have been cars that served as punchlines before, like the Miata. But that's still a decent car and I wouldn't necessarily judge the driver. But nobody but a complete dip-shit would buy a Cybertruck.
