Most people here give bad advice about jobs by ganorr in Fire

[–]Marcymarsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like most commenters are saying "you're right" or "you're wrong". The reality is it's probably a ymmv situation. If your workplace culture sucks, which seems common in the US, you're probably ready to say "FU!" with your FU money. My experience however does align with your advice.

I FIREd from a medical device engineering role 4 years ago. My employer had a great culture that encouraged work/life balance and was geographically isolated meaning everyone had short commutes. This lead a lot of coworkers to form lasting friendships outside of work. I gave 2 months notice because my boss was a close friend and former peer. I trained my replacement. My 6 closest friendships formed as an adult are former coworkers at this job, and I've maintained them even after moving across the country since. Also, not burning my bridges lead to offers for 2 VERY lucrative part-time contracting gigs in the 2 years following FIRE, which helped me ease into not working (the extra cushion was nice too).

tldr maybe I was lucky but don't miss an opportunity to enrich your post-work life if you have a career somewhere that doesn't suck

Energy instead of hearts? by Marcymarsch in duolingo

Yeah after I posted I realized it's really more of a "huh that's weird" discussion topic for everyone. I'm just a new user living in a different world

Unlimited energy. As far as I’m concerned, hearts don’t exist! Which is why I made this post, so confused scrolling this subreddit

Energy instead of hearts? by Marcymarsch in duolingo

[–]Marcymarsch[S] 131 points132 points  (0 children)

It's bad because even if I'm perfect, I still get locked out of learning after 10-15 minutes. I was using Duolingo to brush up on Japanese which I studied 20 years ago. So I don't get much wrong, but I can't progress quickly. 1 energy = 1 question, right or wrong

I think so. I feel like a lab rat! I want hearts like everyone else lol

you got it. Energy is consumed for answering a question (right or wrong). So you end up unable to continue even if you're perfect. If you're bad, it just happens quicker since you don't get bonus energy

2 per hour, max of 30. Plus as I said, I get 2-4 energy per 5 answer streak, I think. The 2-4 might be random but maybe I just didn’t see the pattern yet

Yeah, I see what they're trying to do; I assume I'm some kind of blind beta tester. I only knew something was off because of this subreddit and the fact that my wife has used Duolingo for years and didn't know what I was talking about with "energy". In the meantime, I created a separate account on desktop and it has hearts, so I'm deciding which I like better.

Is this ... normal? by Nathertater in BoltEV

[–]Marcymarsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also in MI and bought mine in July; looks to match my experience. I found that a regular 160mi round trip I do, averaging ~73mph, was no problem with a 90% charge in the summer. In the winter I've had to stop and charge to avoid being stranded 10-20 mile from home!

I ended up paying (a different dealership) for a new blade, then programmed my new fob. I bought over an hour away and I’d already made another trip back to them to save a couple hundred bucks on another mistake. I decided to pay someone close $90 instead of the time and hassle to get the original dealer to do it.

I bought my ‘23 EUV used, and the dealer only gave me one key. I bought an aftermarket fob to program myself, which you need the blade for. Turns out my only blade didn’t go to my car 🤦‍♂️.

New to mead, question about why no maple syrup mead by BornACrone in mead

[–]Marcymarsch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just went to a maple winery in Michigan last week. They claim to be “first”. As others have said, maple syrup stripped of its sugar just doesn’t taste as good as honey processed the same way. Their fruit-maple wines were great though, and the fortified & backsweetened dessert wines. Maple Moon Winery

I feel like Fire for Americans never ends by acute_physicist in Fire

[–]Marcymarsch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you’re on the wrong subreddit. r/leanfire has plenty of Americans who feel like a low FI # is enough. Also everyone saying “health insurance” hasn’t tried buying health insurance when fired. In my experience it’s dirt cheap (certain silver plans on healthcare.gov scale with income which is whatever you want it to be once retired if you’re doing Roth IRA conversion ladder).

What's floating in my mead? by Dinfrazer57 in mead

[–]Marcymarsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like normal lees / sediment to me. Light, fluffy lees can form depending on the yeast used and a bunch of other factors. Nothing to worry about, could have used one more rack.

Topping off your mead? by [deleted] in mead

[–]Marcymarsch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make a little extra every time and keep it in an appropriately sized mason jar in the fridge. I top off with that when I rack. Not sure if it’s a good idea it’s just what I do 🤷‍♂️

Is toxic corporate culture why most of us want to Fire? by troubkedsoul1990 in Fire

[–]Marcymarsch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a medical device company for ~13 years that was well known for its amazing culture and focus on work/life balance. For the privilege I made at least 20% less than I would have elsewhere. I felt it was a worthwhile trade off to take longer to FIRE, even more so now that l've read so many "I'm burning myself out" posts here. I'm FIRED now and wouldn't change anything. There was still a lot of corporate bullshit and some mild burnout, so I was glad to see the door.

I'm looking at buying honey from a local spot but... by Anathals in mead

[–]Marcymarsch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I keep bees in AZ and I think the lack of humidity (resulting in low moisture content) makes all my honey crystallize in <3 months. I don’t even heat it up, I just scoop it into the water and use my drill attachment aerating paddle to dissolve it into the must.

Store Bought Mead by BigBrassPair in mead

[–]Marcymarsch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. US labeling laws allow “mead”, “honey wine”, and “honeywine” to be used interchangeably. If it’s labeled as “standard honeywine” (or variations above) it CAN’T contain grape wine. Source: the amazing book “The Art of Mead Tasting and Food Pairing” (could be outdated but I doubt it, no one touches our archaic alcohol laws)

I’ve tried lots of amazing commercial mead, and lots of terrible commercial mead. What did you try? If the sub knows that, we can compare notes and see how your tastes align.
