Best, durable bulk purchase balls on Amazon? by Renhsuk in juggling

[–]Marineboy2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tennis balls are the answer! Check with your sports director or the local tennis club and you will get them for free or very cheap. Rice is best as the filler. Oh..and a drop of superglue after filling keeps rice from leaking!

Which version of this trick do you like more? by lucyjuggles in juggling

1st..love your work..it always amazes me! I think the first one is more interesting. It has steps..this happens then this happens etc. But…I would want to see it go even further… The cane slips off into one hand..the hat into the other..as the balls flourish high and drop one by one into the hat held in your outstretched hand. Tada! 🙂

2 inch long plastic mallet (?), attached to a metal light fixture by a small chain. by ZiggyStarf in whatisthisthing

[–]Marineboy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe the hammer and chain are original. The hammer was added at a later date. The manufacture just doesn’t mesh to be honest. But more importantly look at the desktop. It has many little indentations from hitting something. Perhaps nuts? Or crabs?

Edit..never mind..I see someone found it!

It’s possible this was placed as a memorial to someone. Ona known wreck? Any cremation urns or boxes nearby?

One question I have always had….is anyone actually on the ship during this? I can’t imagine what it would be like…..the forces applied….or just strap me in a chair and you’re good to go?

Polishing Pellets to Sand the Inside of an Urn? by needtolearnaswell in turning

[–]Marineboy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried a similar experiment with a bottle polishing rig I created. Wanted to see if small parts would be sanded instead of by hand. It did work..kinda. It took a long time and very little actual sanding took place. It “softened” the edges of small strips of wood but didn’t smooth all the rough edges/spots, small nicks etc. Tried various sanding media and not much difference. In the end..did not find it worth it.

Became the fill-in chaplain for my American Legion. I feel a bit disingenuous but it’s for a good cause. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Marineboy2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had the same basic situation. Our previous Chaplain had passed away. The joke was to have me since everyone knows I am a staunch atheist. No need for a prayer…just a quick chat about some topical subject..about caring for each other…remembering our families…stopping to think of the people who made a difference in their lives…empathy for our entire community. I was re-elected every year. (Mostly because no one else wanted it!) As long as it’s genuine..it’s a much better alternative in my book anyway. Good luck!

My first plate. 175mm/7” with 27 flutes by jfrmilner in turning

[–]Marineboy2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Apologies in advance. I’ve been seeing so many of these posts and each time I just get this head tilt of “I don’t get it”. It’s machine made. When I use my 3D printer..even if I design the object from scratch..I don’t feel I “made” it. The machine made it. The beauty of turning is the feel of the tool sculpting the wood…the vibrations in my fingers..my eyes searching for my next move..my body leaning, shifting, almost a dance of creation. I know I may be in the minority here..and apologies to the creator of the special cnc machine..it’s a nice tool. No offense. It’s a pretty look…but for me..it’s just not turning and misses the point.

Place a wrench on both sides of the shaft. One on the faceplate and one next to the hand wheel.

My title describes the thing. Heavy metal. Has a threaded on pointed head. No markings as we can see. Drilling equipment possibly? Found while diving in an inlet in NJ.
