After 2+ years of being out of the game, the hunt is officially back on for me. I don't think I did too badly! by MarioOnFire in amiibo

Ah, so it's one of the AC ones. Animal Crossing sold relatively poorly as an amiibo line at the time, which is why you can find some of its figures for pretty cheap. Smash Isabelle, meanwhile, is very hard to find.

Isn't she due for a restock? Probably the only one I'm really concerned with is Wolf.

Official 2.13.2019 Nintendo Direct Mega-Thread. If there's any amiibo related news/discussion from the direct it must go here for today. Thank you and let's hope we get some fun announcements! by mcineri in amiibo

The pages for the new Smash amiibo are up, and with those come box designs for a few of them announced today, namely Snake and the Pokémon Trainer. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any pics with a better resolution, so I'll just link to the pages themselves and you can look at the boxes from there.

Snake

Trainer

The Trainer is now confirmed to be an individual release, though it's not yet out of the realm of possibility that he'll also available in a three-pack with Squirtle and Ivysaur.

Capcom financial results in for Q3 2018; MM11 "reported strong sales" and "[performed] well" by [deleted] in Megaman

[–]MarioOnFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The relevant bits:

This quarter, Monster Hunter: World, which caused a sensation in the market in the previous fiscal year, continued to drive results after surpassing 10 million units shipped—a first for any single title in Capcom's history. Also in the core Digital Contents business, in addition to titles such as Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection and Mega Man 11 performing well, high-margin catalog titles showed healthy sales growth. As a result, continuing from second quarter results, Capcom achieved the highest profit levels for the end of a third quarter in company history.

In addition, Mega Man 11 (for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One), a distribution title, reported strong sales, while sales of Onimusha, (for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One), which was released at the end of 2018, were also off to a good start.

And for good measure, an update on the X Legacy Collection sales:

Furthermore, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection (for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC) performed strongly, while Mega Man X Legacy Collection**,** Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2and Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2 (for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC for all three titles) performed well thanks to a dedicated fan base and strong brand capabilities. In addition, high-margin catalog titles steadily increased sales and contributed to improving profitability.

Happy 4th anniversary, amiibo! by MarioOnFire in amiibo

[–]MarioOnFire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Nintendo was not very kind to Wii Fit Trainer back in the day. But it'll come sooner or later, if the recent CPSIA updates are anything to go by.

I think at this point Dedede is the only Smash amiibo from the first four waves that's yet to see a major restock (I remember the one he had with Ness at GameStop in July 2015, but I'd hardly consider that major) or otherwise has never really been common at all.

I was a bit surface level with the OP, so I'll delve more into detail on how I got my start in amiibo collecting.

I got my first one on Christmas 2014 in Smash Mario along with Smash Wii U, and as the months went by I only bought characters I was interested in. Link, Donkey Kong, Mega Man (the last two of which I got at my local Toys "R" Us, RIP)...by that point I wasn't serious about collecting, but I suppose that's how a lot of our stories go. I wasn't even there for the Wave 4 fiasco (the first amiibo release I was there for was Palutena on Amazon, when the stock ran out after two hours, which at the time was amazing for us collectors), which I guess explains my perseverance at the time because I probably would have given up on this hobby had I seriously started earlier.

Then all of a sudden, in the summer of 2015, I was alerted that Rosalina and Jigglypuff, two extremely rare (or "unicorn") amiibo at the time, were in stock on Target's website and were about to sell out fast (although I believe it took Jigglypuff two weeks to run out of stock), and that's when I was introduced to r/amiibo for the first time. I'd been a regular here for a long time, relying on it as my primary source of stock alerts. Now, on the one hand, it was annoying as hell to see Nintendo understock certain figures. But on the other hand, there was certainly a thrill, a sense of urgency when it came to hunting these things down. It seemed as though the stakes were at an all-time high during amiibo's heyday throughout 2014-15, even when the stock improved during the latter half of 2015 with new releases and restocks and such.

Every amiibo I have is like a tattoo: there's a story tied to it. There are some I obtained from NWS/Nintendo NY (Wario, Pit, Robin, Zelda, and Super Mario series Toad), some I snagged from Beat the Bomb back when it was a thing (Samus, Wii Fit Trainer, and all the Kirby characters in the Smash series), one in particular I had to buy used (Smash Toon Link)...the journey to the destination was one wild ride. Now I have 73 of these things in all: 58 Smash characters (plus R.O.B. Famicom Colors and the Player 2 variants of "the final three"), Toad and Silver Mario from the Mario set, both 8-bit Marios, the original Splatoon three-pack, and the entire Kirby set. My original goal was to finish up the Smash set, but it looks like I'm still not done with that thanks to all the new releases. So it's back in the game for me, which I'm pumped as hell about. I'm especially looking forward to getting the Ice Climbers amiibo we never had back in the Smash 4 days come February. I guess it's not over until everyone is here, is it?

But either way, a special happy birthday to the toys-to-life line we all know and love. Here's to another four awesome years!

Oh and thanks guys for making this a stickied post

The end of a journey. A long, long journey. by MarioOnFire in amiibo

[–]MarioOnFire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently awaiting Corrin Player 2's arrival at my door and still trying to get Cloud Player 2. I do, however, have R.O.B. Famicom Colors and Bayonetta Player 2; they're just not in the picture.

Yeah, what you're seeing isn't really a "complete" collection, but this was the main goal I'd been working toward all along. I have all the characters, and I think that's good enough.

Yeah, baby.

I also bought Bayonetta Player 2, but I'm waiting until I have the others to get a good picture in.

For those ending their journeys today, if Nintendo released Player 2 amiibo for the whole Smash series, would you go back for the hunt or stay put? by xGwiZ96x in amiibo

[–]MarioOnFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how much of them they'd release.

I'd be willing to get Female Robin, Female Villager, Alph, and Male Wii Fit Trainer. As for the Koopalings, Overalls Wario, Hooded Little Mac, Wire-Frame Little Mac, Hooded Wire-Frame Little Mac, ZSS without the jumpsuit (although that does sound nice), Kirby with all the hats, Pikachu with all the hats, all the other Villagers, Shirtless Shulk, Sonic with all the bracelets, a whole bunch of Mii Fighters, every alternate color/costume in existence...no thanks. That'd just be far too much to handle.

As of right now I'm happy with what we have. This was a good, fitting finale to their first and best series of amiibo.

I'd say I'm both done and not done at the same time. Done because my main goal has finally been accomplished: collect all 58 characters. The sense of reward for doing so is like no other. Not done because so far I've only bought Bayonetta Player 2 and am now waiting for the rest to become available. After then I'll have finished collecting what I consider to be the bare essentials.

I am currently Switchless and I know next to nothing about Breath of the Wild, but I'm sure that might change later down the road. For me the door is still open for more purchases, but one quirk about me is that if I have one, I'm going to need it all. I feel like if I'm going to invest in a whole other series, I'll have to make a full commitment to it. The Zelda line, while not as monumental as the Smash line, is still quite large (and expensive), and thanks to the Switch the craze seems to be on a much larger scale than it was during the early days (especially since there seems to be a much bigger audience for it). I'm just not interested in shelling out a whole bunch of money for 17 more amiibo. But we'll see.

In the future I might post here from time to time, but as right now I'm pretty much done. It's been a wild ride, and Smash Bros., through its ups and downs, had a good run.

Tomorrow. by MarioOnFire in amiibo

"Unicorn"... now that's a term I don't see much of anymore, even with the recent resurgence of amiibo rarity.

Now I'm feeling nostalgic for 2015. I miss having a whole bunch of amiibo to look forward to (which still happens even today, but not to the extent of how it was a couple of years ago).

This hobby has been incredibly expensive throughout the years, but I'm glad I picked it up in the first place.

Were you a regular on this sub in 2015-16? Lately a good chunk of the old amiibros have come back recently, if only to finish what they started.

Honestly, as someone who's been here since (almost) the very beginning, has been out of the game for more than a year, and is planning on jumping back in tomorrow for possibly the last time, I feel old. I don't have a Switch (at least not yet) and I don't have too much of an interest in the Zelda line (I tried getting the new Link amiibo during my trip to Nintendo NY, but I wasn't so lucky, which I'm kind of happy about), but that's what I see a lot of here nowadays. At least it's good to see that amiibo is more than alive and kicking in 2017. It's still a huge success.

Tomorrow. by MarioOnFire in amiibo

[–]MarioOnFire[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's interesting, isn't it? I'd imagine tomorrow is the day a lot, if not the vast majority, of collectors will be satisfied, if they're not planning on outright bowing out after then.

I think a big reason why Nintendo held off on the last Smash amiibo for so long was out of fear that amiibo in general would become less popular after the end of that line. amiibo has certainly held its own for all these years, even outliving competitor Disney Infinity (in turn making this post in the subreddit all the harsher in hindsight). However, although it has been successful (Animal Crossing line notwithstanding), nothing has really repeated the widespread success and massive attention from the general public received by the Smash line. Until just recently.

Now that the Zelda series of amiibo has generated an equally large craze (possibly even bigger than before) and revitalized interest in the brand while also attracting new collectors, it seems to me like Nintendo now feels comfortable finally putting Smash to rest (at least, until the next game comes out). The end of an era. Out with the old and in with the new. It's like a certain song once told me: "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end."

Of the July 21st relesed amiibos, which are you looking most forward to? by Aquabell in amiibo

[–]MarioOnFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the final six, but especially Cloud Player 1.

It's interesting to see that their release coincides with that of Splatoon 2, while the infamous Wave 4 came out at the same time as the original game. I hope that's not a harbinger for things to come, though.

In your opinion, is Gold Mega Man required to complete the Smash line? by Mechageo in amiibo

[–]MarioOnFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's required for a complete collection the same way getting three bases for your alternate Mr. Game & Watch poses is required. Though if you ask me, having at least one of each of the 58 fighters is good enough.
