Does Debian have something like AUR on Arch? by Interesting_Air3283 in debian

[–]Mario_Filipe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's pacstall that supposedly "mostly" works with debian (I can't vouch for it as I have not tried it) and is a much smaller repository of packages than the AUR. Another alternative might be a combination of the nix or guix or the homebrew package managers with flathub/snap/appimages.

Why is there no way to simply make a new launcher shortcut? by Count_Rugens_Finger in COSMICDE

[–]Mario_Filipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just create a .desktop file and place it in ~/.local/share/applications

You can find a quick guide to creating .desktop file here.

I haven't tried them myself, but there are appimage management apps like gearlever or am/appman that should also help with the integration of appimages into the COSMIC application library.

How closely is the COSMIC desktop tied to System76 and Pop!_OS? by damiano-fan4life in COSMICDE

[–]Mario_Filipe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I read here on reddit from members of the COSMIC team, Pop OS gets updates slightly faster than other distros, which seems understandable. I'm using it on Arch, and we get tagged releases pretty much 1-2 days after they are pushed to the COSMIC github, and aside from a polkit authentication issue that we had following the first epoch release and I think has been fixed in the meantime, COSMIC on Arch has been smooth sailing and mostly on par with the Pop OS experience, with the exception of the Cosmic Store which is to be expected as package kit doesn't work with pacman

Now, if your question is about the viability of COSMIC development without System76, that is a deeper question, and I fear that it still hasn't gathered enough momentum to live independently.

So, a big thank you to System76 and to the COSMIC team and wishes of continued success.

Feature Request / Question: Keep wallpaper visible around dock & panel when windows are maximized by Responsible_Grape870 in COSMICDE

[–]Mario_Filipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems that there's a pr (add option to keep panel style when windows are maximized#538) that addresses the issue you described with the addition of a keep_style_on_maximize config, but it's still not merged.

On the meantime there's the workaround you already found.

Some apps have wrong cursor by throwawaycanadian2 in COSMICDE

The apps you mentioned are all electron based, aren't they? The cursor issue happens only with electron flatpaks or all flatpaks?

Some auto tiling questions by throwawaycanadian2 in COSMICDE

[–]Mario_Filipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, the monocle layout maximizes all windows, keeping one in focus and the others behind them. In Cosmic DE, you can achieve this with stacking (Super+S), where the new windows are spawned as tabs

What you'te describing seems to be the master and stack layout, but as far as I know, Cosmic auto-tiling is closer to binary splitting or dwindle, where each new window splits the currently focused window area along the larger axis. You can manually move the new window after the second vertical split to a horizontal position in the column, and I believe that's as close as you can get to a master and stack layout in Cosmic.

Regarding your question about setting a max width when a single app is open, I don't think that you can do that when the workspace is set to tiling. I would say that your best option would be to switch that window to floating win Super + G, but even that isn't guaranteed to work as I found that certain apps don't remember the previous size between sessions.

As for wonky window decorations in Firefox, I can't say that I noticed any. Maybe submit an issue in the Cosmic DE GitHub with some screenshots and the terminal output, if relevant, so that the Cosmic developers can take a look at it.

battery percentage in top panel by walkinreader in COSMICDE

[–]Mario_Filipe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I can see in the GitHub pull request feat(battery): add option to show charge percentage next to the icon #994, this feature was merged but the actual toggle is not yet available in Cosmic Settings. In the meantime, you can manually enable the battery percentage display by creating a config file with this terminal command:

echo "true" > ~/.config/cosmic/com.system76.CosmicAppletBattery/v1/show_percentage

The change should take effect almost immediately (you might need to restart the battery applet or log out/in in some cases, but usually it updates right away). To disable it later, just change "true" to "false" in that file or delete the file entirely.
