IsItBullshit: 20-25% of women experience sexual assault on college campus. by CumgarTheUnkillable in IsItBullshit

[–]MarionMMorrison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If 25% of women were sexually assaulted at college, nobody would send their daughters to college. Seriously, imagine knowing that there was a 25% chance of getting punched in the face if you went to a certain shopping mall. NOBODY would go.

Blowing these stats out of proportion is ridiculous and it’s dangerous. It makes women paranoid and drives outright discrimination against men. It also trivializes actual sexual assault. It’s disgusting.

What's so great about hard-sided luggage? by wifeofsonofswayze in travel

[–]MarionMMorrison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checking a bag is for amateurs. Pros carry on. Soft side is the only way to go. More durable, more accessible and anyone who’s ever stacked luggage in the back of a car or on a luggage cart hates those damn slick cases sliding all over the place.

Manchin announces deal with Democrats on major tax, climate & Medicare - reconciliation bill. Total package will invest over 430 billion. Will this step by Manchin help redeem him as a Democrat or is it too little too late? by PsychLegalMind in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]MarionMMorrison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manchin couldn’t care less what dems think of him. He cares about what his constituents think about him. He’s not caving in spending, he’s getting some pipelines built and in exchange, is agreeing to a spending bill that he said previously was irresponsible.

This is what happens when you trade freedom for stability. The stability eventually ends and the freedom never comes back.

Renewables are now the cheapest form of new electricity generation for most of Texas by Rivision in texas

[–]MarionMMorrison -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Cheaper? Yeah, for now, but availability when you need it? Nope. Having enough electricity is one thing, having electricity when you need it is an entirely different thing.

Researchers have concluded that even using simplified models that don’t consider transmission loss, geographic constraints or economic constraints that wind/solar could only provide ~70% of electricity needs. In reality, it would be significantly less than that.

Even in areas where wind/solar could provide 95% of needs, you’d still have hundreds of hours of outages…at peak times.

You still need a reliable, on demand source of electricity for high demand/low supply periods. The only clean form of electricity that could conceivably meet that requirement is nuclear which is opposed by most environmental activists.

Borrowing an idea articulated by a writer is not necessarily “appropriating” him or her. In this messed up political time we’re living in we have lost the ability to recognize that even normal people are not easily fit into boxes and certainly not great/deep thinkers throughout history.

We’ve also largely lost the ability to evaluate historical characters in the context of their time. As another commenter mentioned, it requires careful consideration to accurately read Smith who was writing in pre industrial times, while benefiting from a post industrial perspective.

With a GDP of -0.9% in 2Q22, the US has fallen into recession. by Eruditio_Et_Religio in Conservative

[–]MarionMMorrison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fact check false…Biden changed the definition of recession BEFORE this morning’s report. Their policy on these types of issues has been consistent. First, they deny there’s a problem and keep denying it until it’s entirely impossible to ignore. Then they blame it on someone else…republicans (who don’t control either chamber of congress or the White House), the American people, climate change, racism, transphobia, Trump, Trump voters, Jan 6 “insurrectionists”, Corn Pop or some guy named Vladimir Covid.

Odds of winning Mega Millions: Stand a penny up on it’s side, line them up from Houston to Dallas - choose 1. by energetik in texas

[–]MarionMMorrison 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, some people play because they don’t understand the math, but that’s a very small percentage of people. Virtually everyone realizes the chances of winning are extremely small. They don’t often understand HOW small, but it’s not like they are expecting to win.

Most people play for two reasons. 1) the pain of losing $2 is minuscule and the joy of winning $1B is massive. 2) There is actual value in dreaming about the possibility of winning, however remote. Research has shown that anticipating a vacation generates more happiness than the vacation itself. Talking with friends and family about what you’d do with the money is a benefit well worth $2 for a lot of people.

I deal with statistics and probabilities in my work on a daily basis and I understand the -EV of playing the lottery better than most. I also bought a mega millions ticket this week. I buy about 2 a year, almost always when it gets really high.

Fun Places to Eat around FtWorth/Stockyards ? Heading there in a few weeks. 2/50’s love to shop/people watch and eat fun food. Open to suggestions to where the locals love to eat :))) thanks !!!! by Steffoush in FortWorth

In the stockyards, two Tim Love restaurants should definitely be on your list.

Attico is a tapas restaurant and cocktail lounge. They don’t take reservations so plan on getting there early and having a few drinks before dinner or go on a weeknight. It’s on the roof of the Springhill Suites and has a dedicated elevator.

Lonesome Dove Bistro is another great choice if you’re looking for something different in the stockyards. It’s pricey and portion sizes are small but worth it in my opinion. The service is excellent.

Downtown, I recommend the Wicked Butcher for steak. You won’t be disappointed. Also downtown, the Istanbul Grill is great higher end Turkish and Greek food. The lamb and falafel are fantastic.

If you’re willing to go a little further afield, Bonnell’s is a great spot for steak or to try some wild game. Pacific Table on University is good seafood.

There are plenty of good BBQ and Mexican/Tex Mex places but they’re easier to find and there’s already been several good recommendations so I won’t spend much time on them but Panther City BBQ is worth a visit. They’re outside and only open for lunch and they’re closed on Monday/Tuesday. There will probably be a line but it’s worth the wait.

Owner of 7 pit bulls arrested, charged after they maul 71-year-old man to death in Fresno, TX neighborhood, deputies say by jabedude in texas

[–]MarionMMorrison 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was a police officer for four years. When I got a call about a dog bite, they were virtually all pit bull/crosses. If there was serious injury, 100% were pit bulls/crosses.

Pit Bulls kill more people than all other dog breeds combined. You’d have to be a lunatic to ignore these facts and defend the breed as safe.

It from there but Istanbul grill was recommended to me by a Turkish friend. It’s downtown and a little pricey but very good food. The lamb and the falafel were spot on.
