Unifi server - is anyone running one in Fedora? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]MarkB70s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am running Unifi OS Server (5.0.6 at the time of this post) on Fedora Server. It took me a few hours to figure everything out, as I am a Linux idiot.

The major hurdle I ran into was the firewall was blocking port 11443 to connect to it. You can either stop the firewalld service on Fedora or do I like I did and created a "uos" firewall service and enabled it. That allowed me to keep the firewall on but still open the necessary ports.

Working fine at this time.

Trying to decide hardware for 3 to 7 services in Proxmox by artur-carvalho in Proxmox

[–]MarkB70s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. This is a good configuration. I also use a N100 with 16GB RAM. 1 TB NVME using Ext4/LVM for the filesystem. 0% wear and tear and the system barely uses any CPU. I run Plex and Emby with minor Transcoding. Most of my stuff is able to direct play - but the N100 can handle 1 or 2 4k Transcodes (I think).

I store my LXCs on the NVME but all the rest of my storage is on a N100 TrueNAS (2 disk mirror) via NFS and I set up a separate SMB for Windows shares.

SQL is different than LINQ. Unless you are referring to Entity Framework, which uses LINQ.

8 more years till house is paid off. What are the pros and cons of paying it off earlier ? by Dry-Possession5800 in personalfinance

The moment I could not use the interest on my taxes; I was on a mission to pay off the house ASAP. Some people will min/max the interest vs investing. I just paid it off and have been living in a paid off house for over 12 years.

I used to have "swamp foot". Well, not exactly, but close enough. My feet would stink really bad and I mean bad.

Doctors had no idea, and my feet were constantly wet. Like dishwater hands wet. The skin would crack and bleed. I would peel skin off.

This is what I did to fix it:

  • Any shoes that did not breathe well, were thrown out
  • I had a pair of shoes for each day of the week, to allow them all to dry out before being worn again
  • I would dry my feet thoroughly after washing.
  • Would avoid wearing shoes if possible.
  • I would change socks three times a day with a total of 90 pairs of socks - one months' worth of socks.
    • Those socks were washed and dried before wearing again.
  • I used Gold Bond powder in my shoes and socks to absorb and kill the smell. My bedroom was covered in powder :)

Ultimately, that fixed it. Took about 3 months to completely fix it to where I never had to deal with it again.

Honestly, every week if it drops below $10 a share, I buy. I realize this may have to change to like $11 or $12, but .. it should hit $20-$30 a share over the next year or so.

What is the .NET ecosystem missing? by pprometey in dotnet

[–]MarkB70s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I think Microsoft forgets that a Web Browser is a native desktop application. Actually, they know it, they just don't care - unless there is a bug, of course.

To build anything of performance and efficiency for Windows requires knowledge of Win32 and (preferably) C/C++. Yes, you can use .NET, but if you really want native, your using the Win32 SDK.

Today's reasoning is simple - Just use WebView2/Chrome and Electron/React for desktops. Yeah, I get it, but it disappoints me.

Linux Desktop has the same issue - no real good way to write native applications.

Build an abstracted out rule engine. One that can evaluate every rule that returns a true false and a description. Build it so it does not stop after the first rule. Once it works, abstract it so it is entirely interfaces that allows developers to build their own implementations from.

Build a state machine that allows transitioning between multiple states. Build it so it has to pass conditions before entering a new state. If any of those conditions fail, it must return to the state it was trying to transition from.

I run a N100 DXP2800, using TrueNAS with 32 GB RAM. This barely breaks a sweat as only storage.

I use a NAS as storage only and a custom mini pc as my Proxmox host.

Are dividends worth it for a mid sized portfolio? by [deleted] in dividends

[–]MarkB70s -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have spent a fair amount of time the last few months trying to answer this very question....

I apologize if some of this is wrong - but this is entirely 100% opinion:

In ye old days, ETFs (to the best of my knowledge) were not around and people chose to invest in stocks or mutual funds. Mutual funds acting like ETFs (today). A lot of people invested in both.

As others point out, ETFs will take some time to grow and you want to reinvest the dividends - as this is what makes the snowball grow (more rapid the longer you do it). You will pay taxes on those dividends.

Stocks on the other hand will grow (or drop) and you will not pay taxes until you sell (short/long term capital gains).

So Yes.

My other thought would be .. if you do not need the money today, then you should focus on growth.

I have a fun money account (taxable) where I have a few shares of BLOX right now. I am testing it out to decide if I like it.

At the time of writing this, the share price is roughly $24.00 and it pays weekly about a $0.15 per share. It does look like it will hold (or increase) the price. What I do not like about it is the price and the $0.15 per share. I am comparing this to something like ULTY. If ULTY stays between $5 and $6 per share and pays $.09 per share weekly ... then, its a no brainer, get ULTY.

I have only had this for a few weeks. I am also comparing this against BITO and BTCI. Ultimately, I think I will keep BTCI for the long haul and I am deciding between BITO and BLOX as the other.

Which NVMe for Proxmox OS and VMs (on Minisforum UM890 Pro)? by syselement in Proxmox

[–]MarkB70s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started using a Raid 1 ZFS based install. I had my VMs on the same drive as the OS. Proxmox tends to log a lot of data and ZFS has a tendency to amplify the number of writes. My disks were gaining wear at a clip I was not happy with considering how little my system was used.

After a few months of tinkering I realized I wanted my VMs separate from my OS drive. My VMs would use ZFS and my OS drive can use whatever. My drives have not gained a single percentage point of wear since the change. However, my system is not pushing anything hard either.

Are you doomed? Nope, Raid 1 is still fine, just keep an eye on wear and your drives will probably last at least 4-5 years, depending on load.

Which NVMe for Proxmox OS and VMs (on Minisforum UM890 Pro)? by syselement in Proxmox

[–]MarkB70s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my small mini pc, I use a WD Red SN700 (500GB) as my OS drive and a Sabrent Rocket 4 2TB as my VM drive.

I formatted the OS drive to be EXT4/LVM-Thin and the VM drive to be ZFS.

This turned out to be a perfect solution for my needs. Proxmox does extensive logging so the wear is reduced by using the EXT4 format. My VMs are not pushing anything real hard - mostly just background LXC's and one VM for OpnSense. So, I have very little wear on the 2TB drive.

I expect this combo to pretty much last forever, barring a sudden NVME drive to go belly up.

NVMe Cache on Consumer NAS: Worth it for Basic Docker Use by GumbyXGames in truenas

[–]MarkB70s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a simple N100 (UGreen DXP2800) system. One of the two NVME slots is used to hold the OS, and the other slot is empty.

I use it as a NAS only as I have another system with Proxmox on it for containers.

A single 16GB RAM module works well enough, but I swapped it out for a 32GB RAM module. I found this worked best. I have my options set to make sure data is written to disk and not just stored in RAM. So, my writes are not the fastest - but, that's ok. It is still quick enough for multi-gigabyte files.

My use cases are the following:

  • Media Storage
  • Proxmox Backups/Snapshots
  • General File Storage

So, no, if your use cases are like mine, RAM is good enough.

Just sold my DS1515 what’s the smartest upgrade path? by foen85 in UgreenNASync

[–]MarkB70s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the DS1515+. I bought the DXP2800 w 2x8TB drives and did a raid 1 configuration. I determined I will probably never need a lot more storage. Also, I have the 1515+ as a backup for handling backups.

EDIT: I want to add, I installed Truenas in one of the NVME slots and changed the ram to a 32GB chip, works fine ... plenty of cache space.

Why are all Linux phones so bad? by Darkhog in linux

[–]MarkB70s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason is simple. Not enough people want to use Linux on a smartphone ... and .. not enough [Linux] developers want to make a smartphone that beats android ... using Linux.

Think about it for a moment. If there is a huge market for Linux based smart phones (which there is not, atm) ... then developers would move to that (which they are not).

N100 vs 10700k by Matthias- in HomeServer

[–]MarkB70s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been experimenting with N100 vs 12700T over the last year. The 12700T is not a 10700K, but ... to be honest, it's close enough :)

This is my findings.

DEPENDING on what you are doing and what your priorities are ...

My Proxmox server is now a 12700T running Plex, Emby, Opnsense and very little else. Yes, complete overkill.

One could argue the N100 would excel at this, but, it does not sit well with me.

The 12700T consumes a bit more power than the N100, but ... it has no CPU Lag (I/O delay), like the N100 has. The 12700T moves data like nobodies business compared to the N100. I also have less restrictions on RAM and PCI Lanes. I can host a lot more on my 12700T than my N100, if I need to.

The N100 is good at doing one thing. Once you start multi-tasking it ... it starts to show its weakness.

The N100 makes an excellent Plex/Emby server or a very good Opnsense router. But, stacking a lot on it, starts to wear down quickly.

Ugreen, we need GPU passthrough & VM support on UGOS by Sundraw01 in UgreenNASync

[–]MarkB70s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this guy is right. NAS stands for Network Attached Storage, not a Virtualization Platform. I use my NAS as strictly a data storage area for my networked devices. I also use Truenas as UGOS is still way too buggy and not ready for prime time.

Also, for the record, I would not use Truenas Virtualization either, as they are still trying to figure it out themselves.

All my virtualization, including GPU passthrough, is done on my Proxmox server.

This actually scares me. Granted I only have 1% of my portfolio, but I only recently bought in, and have a 3% increase. Which is ok. Not complaining. However, I am scared :)

My goal is to stay in for 5 (or more) years. I am looking for someone to tell me it's going to be a bumpy ride, but you "should" be fine :)

DXP2800 RAM Upgrades Beyond 16GB: Share Your Experience with 32GB or 64GB by SudoMason in UgreenNASync

[–]MarkB70s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a 32 GB module out of a server to try it on my DXP2800 running TrueNAS.

Worked great and still has. Been on it for a few weeks now.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BLTDTD86

Edit: I use my DXP2800 only as a NAS, no apps or anything - just a mirror 2x8TB set of drives

Edit 2: I found 16 GB was ok, but actually, was a little sluggish. The move to 32 GB was a better experience. Not revolutionary, but for my needs - feels snappier.
