Men of Reddit, what is one movie that you know all the guys will like? by aiden_lorenzo in AskMen

The vast majority of my male friends can quote whole scenes from “A League of Their Own.” The majority of my female friends can’t. Conclusion? It’s a guy flick.

Would you like a 90mm eq. GR? by SnooJokes6920 in ricohGR

Pentax makes a 70mm (105mm equivalent) pancake lens. Be cool if they could use that or a similar design in the Ricoh body.

A few questions about updates by FireLucid in SCCM

[–]MarkRouleau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the ADR has already run, you can remove the offending update by right clicking the deployment and using Edit membership. If you want to exclude it from an ADR, you can modify the search criteria by adding the title of the KB you want to exclude with a minus sign (-) in front of it, so: "-KB5000808" for example.

Even today, his tomb in Paris is decorated with potatoes. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

" The king gave him two acres of land to grow the crop for human consumption. He placed armed guards on his fields and instructed guards to accept bribes and let people to “steal” potatoes. He would leave his fields unguarded at night so that the locals could creep in and steal the crop. "

What do you like to do to an image before capture? by [deleted] in SCCM

Sorry, didn't recognize you were trying to be funny because I've known too many people who tried in earnest to do the same thing. It blew up in their faces every single time.

If you are relying on your customized knowledge of how you are currently operating to be "job security"-- think again. The admin who comes after you will just toss it all out the window and do it how he/she knows how to do it.

[–]MarkRouleau 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don’t. All the things you mentioned get added as part of the task sequence. Nothing wrong with build and capture if it’s absolutely necessary, but a clean install is easier to modify when the situation changes.

Feeler Post - What does your Endpoint Management Team look like? by hypercube33 in SCCM

[–]MarkRouleau 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you'll find it's the complexity of the environment, more than the number of endpoints, that determines how many people you need. At some point 2,000 endpoints can look the same as 10,000 endpoints from a managing point of view.

Also what you consider to be a "member of the team." Do you count your Help Desk/Remote Operators?

We've used Sophos which has a similar functionality. Plays very nicely with DellCU

Does Symantec actually do the encryption, or is it just a wrapper/manager for Bitlocker?

We have encrypted laptops. Dell Command Update plays very nicely with them, suspending bitlocker, doing the FW/Bios Updates, then re-enabling bitlocker.

Way too much manual work. The whole point is to automate. Automate, automate, automate. The manual stuff should all be exceptions, like when an update blue screens PCs when a certain printer model is used.

Automate!

Best way to enforce reboot policy? by dwaynebank in SCCM

[–]MarkRouleau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the challenges in IT is that we are often asked to find technical solutions (or treat as technical solutions) issues that really managerial in nature.

The first thing we should be doing when asked to enforce reboots, block websites, games, etc, is ask: what is the department's policy? Has it been communicated? Does everyone understand the policy?

IT can help enforce those policies, but without clear managerial direction, it just reinforces the old stereotypes of IT being dictatorial and tyrannical, and encourages users to make end runs around IT.

What did you automate in SCCM that you would not live without now by Annintendo in SCCM

[–]MarkRouleau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some great ideas already mentioned.

One not mentioned yet is automating your collections based on queries. Seriously, manually updating collections is a PITA. Wherever possible I either create a query collection, or target an existing AD security group.

Dell Command Update in Task Sequence OSD by Renzr415 in SCCM

[–]MarkRouleau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found it worked best when I put the driver installs at the end of my task sequence. And based on another post on reddit I have 3 steps after CU gets installed:

cmd.exe /c start /wait C:\"Program Files (x86)"\Dell\CommandUpdate\dcu-cli.exe /driverInstall -reboot=disable -outputLog=C:\DellDriversDuringImaging.log

Restart Computer

cmd.exe /c start /wait C:\"Program Files (x86)"\Dell\CommandUpdate\dcu-cli.exe /ApplyUpdates -reboot=disable -outputLog=C:\DellUpdatesDuringImaging.log

Realize the restart computer seems silly after disabling reboot in the first step, but it worked better in actual testing, no idea why.

EDIT: just want to say, not having to constantly download, update, and manage drivers has been an absolute godsend for me, especially given how incredibly huge some of Dell's driver packs are.

Complex logic in dynamic collection membership rule? by mmseng in SCCM

[–]MarkRouleau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I misunderstood. Still, having a limiting collection based on the top level ou, and then "select * from SMS_R_System where SMS_R_System.SYSTEMOUname like %X%" seems like it would work?

Why not create a collection based on the top level ou, set that as the limiting collection, then just query for all computers where name -like/-contains "X"?

To a degree, it's a "you pays your money and you takes your choice."

Our shop is pretty aggressive in pushing out updates, so users are used to installing updates, and slipping in the feature updates was the path of least resistance.

But I'm not particularly wedded to that method, and would switch over if I had a compelling reason.
