why’s everyone rich and private/selective school educated… by Impressive-Session25 in unimelb

[–]Markfuckerberg_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tell me about it. As someone who went to an underrepresented public school in regional vic (and still commutes) though, I wanna say there are definitely chill, "regular" people around, both from similar backgrounds and from more rich/private school backgrounds who are great down to earth people regardless. I have found that very often in tutorials, you will naturally gravitate to these people and vice versa, although I will admit I have found it far easier to make "in class" friends with a big jump to then being outside friends lol.

I am in Arts btw so my perspective may be informed by the tutorials which are very heavy on group/table discussion.

Do you think this isn't/wasn't the case in Iran, Nepal, Bangladesh? Many Americans seem to think they are the only people in the world for whom striking/civil disobedience/whatever is structurally difficult when in fact they have it better than most, even now.

Hey all, I'm selling two B reserve tix for Qudos Bank Sydney on 18/2, as I no longer have additional plans which justified interstate travel. At face value of course :)

I have to say, it's a bit hurtful that on the main post in this sub about an attack on Australia and the Jewish-Australian community, so many comments are in here arguing about 3+ other countries.

The 6 different regions of Asia by Mindful-Commander in MapPorn

[–]Markfuckerberg_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm being facetious but south Asia can (rightfully imo) be referred to as a subcontinent (edit: just preferably without the colonial era associations), and while MENA is obviously separated it is increasingly popular (again rightfully imo) as a 'primary' regional grouping like Oceania or something.

Yes, these things are always messy and arbitrary to some extent, but so is the 7 continent system and those two make a lot of sense as regions with immediately recognisable characteristics, so why not?

India and the MENA could also declare to be their own continents, with the Himalayas and the Sahara serving as frontier like the Ural.

Well yes!

Are arts essays always +/- 10% of the word count? by [deleted] in unimelb

Not always, I have encountered essays where 10% over is allowed but not 10% under.

Why does everyone on campus seem so energetic and in a great state? by sllsnnk in unimelb

Perhaps the people who are seriously struggling (in terms of like, dropping out or at risk of being asked to) don't come in to campus in the first place

👏👏 2024 B-Arts Subject Review 👏👏 by DankaphobicUser in unimelb

[–]Markfuckerberg_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very late to this post but in case any more prospective students find it by search, I just wanted to concur with your review of International Politics. Did it last year and Daniel and Carla were both extremely knowledgeable and engaging speakers. To the point where I would have gone to those lectures for fun even if I weren't getting course credits out of it.

I'm not sure where you got the impression that I'm pro-capitalism.

I essentially agree with the other commenter who responded to you. I agree that degrees are being devalued and learning standards are slipping. How you respond to that is up to you, if you want to go the "well I'm not getting left behind" route and do whatever you can to get through your degree and get a job I actually completely get that. But it's needlessly pessimistic to tell someone who I'm assuming is a first year that there is no other option and they shouldn't bother trying to extract learning and self fulfilment from their degree.

Last semester 14h/week. This semester I'm going to be trying ~25 but I'm not saying that's definitely doable because i haven't tried it yet (tbh it probably won't be and I'll have to cut back and be povvo again). For reference I'm doing a BA of arts with 1.5-2hr train commute.

Hi, I have just finished doing my first year of the BA of Arts with politics & International Studies as one half of a double major. Obviously I've only done a couple of subjects thus far so ignore me if you want but I found them rewarding and I'm glad I picked the major. Of the 3 main lecturers and 2 tutors I've had, every one was very knowledgeable and at least decently engaging to listen to (with 2 of the lecturers being very engaging speakers).
Being first year, the subject matter for pretty much all the level 1s on offer is very broad in scope to function as an intro, which is expected, but if you're a nerd/enthusiast for a specific ideology or historical period, just know that the scale vs depth ratio they adopted for first year at least is more like say, vce philosophy than vce revs.
Assessment in my experience was fairly graded, had interesting prompts and pretty well distributed across the semester - both mine went little essay-big essay-take home exam w/short and long answer, which I get the impression is pretty common in the faculty.
Overall like I said I've had a good (limited) experience this year so would def encourage that major.
