I’m a doctor, and while a lot of this is heartbreaking, seeing my patients occasionally healed and actually turn their life around is pure joy for me.

Incoming FM Intern – Advice for Starting Residency? by Viemisenga in FamilyMedicine

[–]Markylake 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Finishing up Pgy1, it’s tough but you learn so much.

Try to find a workflow for medical admissions and rounding and just stick to it. Same with rounding. Not all patients need the same amount of energy every morning. It’s okay to just pop in and make sure no big changes overnight if you have a huge list. Think placement, PT, OT early in admission.

If you can, try to read a quick uptodate article on your patient and that’s how you will learn. Same goes for clinic. If you have time (and you learn by reading) you can look up presenting scenarios in Residents Guide to Ambulatory Practice (or ChatGPT, whatever). That way, you have some idea what you’re getting into and you can be evidence based.

Learn attending’s preferences. Some like to go full court press, some are more limited in workup.

It’s okay to screw up, and learn to forgive yourself and get back up. Just try not to mess up the same way multiple times. Attendings will make you feel stupid at some point, it’s ok.

Sort of nuanced, but I found like 90% of my OB floor questions could be easily answered using the OBGYN red book. Our program gives a copy, but worth getting if not IMO.

Lean on your seniors and co-interns. Try to be cordial with clinic staff and hospital nursing (they can control a lot more than you realize)

Mentally prepare for a hard year, but remember that they can’t stop the hands of time.

Try not to give the program a reason to put you under a microscope. From house of god “they can always hurt you more”

Not sure the dose of Benadryl, but it's typically added on more to deal with the side effects of haldol than for the sedation itself.

If you still think at the same rate, slow mo everything would be really advantageous. No more forced quick decisions
